Chapter 34: Chapter 34: The Official Cover-Up
He was about to make his move on the hot American babe!
But Pepper was still unconscious. No matter how much of a beast Aetheris was, he couldn't bring himself to lay a finger on an unconscious woman. The least he could do was wait until she woke up.
Maybe then he could stage a steamy little scene of his own.
"Everyone has seen Stark Industries' official statement about last night's events. According to unconfirmed sources, a prototype robot malfunctioned and caused severe damage to Oscorp Tower. Fortunately…"
A news anchor's voice echoed from the TV behind Aetheris as he skimmed the newspaper.
"Iron Man," he read aloud, then thought to himself so much for staying low-key. America's ever-curious public had finally caught up with him.
As expected, a handsome man is like a firefly in the dark, he'll shine no matter where he goes.
He flamboyantly flipped his hair.
Pepper, sitting up in the hospital bed and nibbling an orange, simply rolled her eyes.
"Excuse me, is this Miss Pepper's room?" A man entered the room, dressed in a suit, with a high hairline and a hooked nose.
"Coulson?" Aetheris immediately recognized the high-ranking S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.
"Oh, Mr. Tony Stank, you know who I am?" Coulson asked with a puzzled look.
"Haha, just a lucky guess," Aetheris replied with a laugh.
"I'm here on behalf of the government to help smooth things over after this incident," Coulson said politely, extending his hand.
"Welcome, welcome," Aetheris said, shaking it.
"This is your alibi." Coulson handed him a slip of paper.
Aetheris took a quick look.
"I was on a yacht that night, spent the evening at Avalon Bay"
"That's the official story. Just read it out loud later. We've also gathered testimonies from fifty other guests to support it," Coulson added.
"Honestly, I think it'd be more believable if I said I spent the night with my lovely assistant, Miss Pepper—"
Before he could finish, Pepper stuffed a wedge of orange into his mouth.
"Try some decency for once, would you?" she snapped.
"Uh, let's not improvise. Stick to the script."
"Why isn't Victor or Norman Osborn mentioned?" Aetheris flipped through the documents but didn't see their names.
"We've handled that. According to the report, he went on vacation," Coulson paused.
"You know how sketchy small private planes can be."
"But he's not dead! He's definitely going to come back for revenge. Then what?"
"This isn't my first cover-up. Stick to the statement and everything will be fine. You've got 90 seconds." With that, Coulson turned to leave.
Pepper nudged Aetheris. He looked at her, puzzled.
She threw off the blanket and got out of bed.
"Agent Coulson, thank you sincerely for all the support you've given us."
Coulson smiled. "Just doing our job. I'm sure we'll be working together again."
"Your Strategic Homeland Intervention…" Pepper struggled to recall the full name.
"Just call it S.H.I.E.L.D.," Coulson said smoothly.
"Got it." She laughed awkwardly.
Once Coulson was gone, her smile faded. She turned to Aetheris.
"Now it's your turn. Make sure you sell it."
"Pfft. Faking a story? That's child's play. It's not like I actually believe I'm Iron Man."
Aetheris suddenly frowned.
"'Iron Man' sounds awful. Doesn't anyone in America know how to name heroes properly? If it were up to me, I'd be called 'Iron Hero'!"
"You're definitely not Iron Man," Pepper said, slipping into her clothes.
"I am ..." Aetheris stared, completely fixated.
Watching a gorgeous woman get dressed, now that was a mood lifter. Even though she was still mostly covered, it was more than enough for his imagination.
"If the public finds out I'm Iron Man, and that you're my girlfriend who knows all my secrets, you'd become enemy number one to every woman in America!" he said, watching her slowly slip on her stockings.
"Show-off," she muttered, adjusting the fabric smoothly over her legs.
"Need a hand? I've been dressing up dolls since I was a kid," he offered, squatting down to examine the brand of her stockings.
"No thanks," Pepper said, not even bothering to roll her eyes. "But you can help me with my shoes."
"At your service." Aetheris immediately grabbed her high heels and gently held her feet.
"Stop it—that tickles!"
Ten minutes later, he had finally helped her put them on.
"They're all damp now!"
Feeling the moisture under her soles, Pepper pouted playfully.
"It's fine. They'll dry soon enough. Ever heard of friction creating heat?" Aetheris winked, grabbing her hand and leading her out of the hospital.
"Next, Mr. Tony Stank will make a statement. He won't be taking questions. Thank you," announced the spokesperson, Rhodey, from the podium.
Dressed in a sleek tailored suit, Aetheris stepped confidently onto the stage.
"Uh, long time no see… I'll just stick to the script."
The crowd of reporters burst into laughter.
Among them sat a tall, long-legged blonde reporter, one leg crossed over the other, her gaze locked on Aetheris. He couldn't help but notice those shapely legs and shot her a playful glance.
She blew him a kiss in return.
"There's been a lot of speculation about last night's incident. Some people think I was personally involved in the fight against that monster…"
"Mr. Stank!" the blonde reporter interrupted, raising her hand. "Do you really expect us to believe that a bodyguard in armor just conveniently appeared at the perfect time? Normally"
Every nearby male reporter immediately turned to look at her, especially the two seated behind. They stared, mesmerized by her curves, swallowing hard.
"I know what you're getting at," Aetheris said, smiling. "It's fine to question the official story. What's not fine is to throw around wild theories like saying I'm some kind of superhero."
"I never said you were a superhero," the blonde reporter replied quickly.
"Oh, you didn't? That's good. Because if you had, that'd be absolutely ridiculous. Totally absurd."
Aetheris started to feel the nerves creeping in. He had to steer the Marvel timeline back on track.
"I… I'm not cut out to be a hero. I've got too many flaws, made too many mistakes. And frankly, my influence… hasn't been great."
For someone who used to be a complete nobody, facing hundreds of reporters for the first time was understandably nerve-wracking.
