Chapter 36: Chapter 36: Reckless Clark
"Bang, bang, bang!"
A rhythmic, measured pounding echoed through the room.
Wood chips flew everywhere. Jino was so fast that Gerry, whom he held in his hand, became a mere blur.
"Bang!"
Another violent impact. Gerry, bruised and battered, blood streaking his face and mouth, lay quietly on the shattered wooden planks.
"Honestly, you disgust me."
Jino extended a foot and lightly ground it back and forth on Gerry's face.
Clark stood silently to the side, but the look he directed at Jino was tinged with a familiar expression, one he had seen before by the bridge.
"Your mother raised you for eighteen years, only for you to kill her." Jino scoffed, looking down at Gerry. He grabbed Gerry's collar, and as Gerry stared in terror, Jino raised his fist.
Crack, crack.
Jino clenched his fist, the immense power in his arm making the veins bulge.
An inexplicable fear rose in Gerry's heart. If that punch landed on his head, he would surely die!
"Die," Jino spat out two words, sealing Gerry's fate.
He could have kept Gerry and handed him over to Lex, letting Lex lock the guy in the dim, deep underground lab beneath his factory. But Jino didn't want such a thing to live.
"Whoosh!"
The enormous fist grew larger and closer in Gerry's eyes.
"No, don't kill me!" Gerry shrieked.
Just as the fist was about to land on Gerry's cheek…
"Thwack!"
A hand strenuously blocked Jino's fist.
The collision of fist and palm created a huge gust of wind that spread out in all directions.
The scorching blast caused Gerry to involuntarily squint his eyes.
When he opened them, he realized the person who had saved him was Clark.
Gerry didn't understand why this idiot would stop his friend, but that didn't prevent him from preparing for his escape.
"Wait, Jino, we can't kill him. We should hand him over to the law for judgment." Clark looked at Jino with a serious expression. He couldn't stand by and watch a living person die in front of him.
Jino's eyes shifted, landing coldly on Clark:
"Clark, I'm only going to say this once. Let go."
Seeing Jino's cold eyes, Clark's heart tightened, but he still stubbornly raised his head and said, "We're just ordinary citizens. We don't have the right to judge whether he lives or dies."
"Heh."
Jino chuckled and shook his head. "Then what do you think would happen if we handed him over to the police?"
Jino ignored Clark, who was about to speak, and continued, "He'd be secretly imprisoned in a military research facility, every change in his body studied, and then he'd die on the operating table. And after that, this small town would never know peace again."
"The military would do everything they could to uncover the strange goings-on in this town."
"So, killing him now is for his own good, and for everyone's good." Jino offered a smile that suggested he was considering others. "So, don't stop me."
"No, you can't kill him." Clark didn't back down, opening his mouth to argue with Jino.
Just as Clark was about to speak, Gerry, who had been lying on the ground, squinting and looking half-dead, suddenly sprang up.
He leaped high, jumping onto Clark's head:
"Ha, you two fools!"
Gerry let out a sneer. If Clark hadn't bought him time, he wouldn't have had the chance to transform his body structure and complete his escape plan.
Gerry spread his hands, and his black jacket, draped over him, billowed without a breeze.
Then, his body suddenly exploded, turning into a chaotic swarm of flies that whistled towards the second floor, escaping through the shattered window.
All of this happened in just one second.
Looking at the swarm of hundreds of flies, Jino was helpless; he could only watch the swarm disappear into the night.
"He… he ran away?"
Clark had a look of shock, clearly not having expected Gerry to be able to turn into a swarm of flies and escape.
"Yes, thanks to you."
Shaking Clark's hand off, Jino said sarcastically, "Thanks to your help, a few more innocent people will die by his hand."
To be honest, Clark was a good friend—kind, shy, gentle—but he was too soft-hearted in some matters.
"Being merciful to your enemies is being cruel to yourself."
"I…"
Before Clark could finish speaking, Jino, seeing the guilt on Clark's face, couldn't suppress the anger in his heart. He raised his fist and swung it out fiercely—
"Bang!"
The punch landed squarely on Clark's face, making him stumble backward uncontrollably, blood seeping from the corner of his mouth.
From Clark: Negative Emotion +100...
The punch to Clark's face made it sting with pain.
But if you make a mistake, you have to own it, and if you take a hit, you have to stand firm.
He was the one who let Gerry escape, putting everyone in danger.
So, Clark moved his lips but ultimately said nothing, hanging his head in frustration.
"Are you... are you two okay?"
Lana Lang, holding a pillow and looking anxious, surveyed her messy living room. She was a little distressed, knowing her aunt would surely kill her when she returned.
But none of that mattered. Lana Lang pursed her lips and said, "Did you catch him? I just saw a swarm of flies fly out of my room."
Jino said nothing, simply looking up at the large hole punched through the ceiling.
Clark couldn't stand the silent atmosphere, especially given how foolish he had acted tonight.
His teenage pride at play, Clark mumbled with his head down, "I'll take responsibility for this."
With that, Clark rushed out of the house, moving so fast he was just a blur.
"What?!" Lana Lang could hardly believe her eyes. "How can Clark be so fast...?"
"You don't need to know, just remember to keep it a secret." Jino glanced indifferently at Lana Lang, then pulled out his phone to make a call. "Hello, Lex, I need your help."
Twenty minutes later.
Lana Lang held her pillow, watching the construction crew go in and out of her house.
It was a good thing Lana Lang's aunt had gone to officiate Mrs. Tate's funeral tonight, otherwise Lana Lang felt sure her ears would have suffered.
"Sigh."
Lana Lang sighed inwardly, then cast her gaze on the figure standing under the crooked-necked tree in the distance.
"So, you want the chemical plant to produce some insecticide?" Lex's expression was odd.
Jino shook his head and stated his request:
"Not just any insecticide, but a concentrated, high-dose one, to ensure all insects within a hundred-meter radius are exterminated."
"It's a bit troublesome, but not a big problem." Lex rubbed his chin. "Remember to leave the guy's body for me. My experiment is starting to show some promise."
Jino knew Lex was referring to his lab work and nodded in agreement.
"So what are you planning to do next?" Lex pulled a cigarette from his pocket and lit it. In just a few seconds, his intelligent mind had already figured out how to create an "insecticide."
