The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents still held their guns, confronting Alex Ray and his group.
Alex and Tony Stark appeared completely unfazed by the tense atmosphere. They walked calmly and leisurely toward the elevator.
The agents exchanged confused, hesitant glances.
The weight of their firearms felt heavy in their hands as each struggled with the question: Should they open fire?
Just as indecision gripped the room, a figure emerged from the far end of the corridor.
It was Agent Coulson, a senior S.H.I.E.L.D. operative. His presence brought a collective sigh of relief, as if the agents had found their backbone.
Coulson stepped in front of the agents and nodded, signaling them to lower their weapons temporarily.
In a steady voice, he ordered, "Go outside and check if there are any injured colleagues who need rescue." Though reluctant, the agents complied and quickly left the area.
Turning to Alex and Tony, Coulson's face twisted with complex emotions—hatred the most prominent.
He clenched his teeth and said through gritted teeth, "Director Fury wants you to come upstairs."
His voice was heavy with reluctance and a sense of helplessness, as if enduring great personal pain.
Despite his reservations, Coulson escorted Alex and Tony into the elevator.
The doors slid closed, isolating them from the outside world.
Inside the elevator, tension remained thick. Coulson fixed a hostile glare on Alex, his resentment palpable.
If breaking the elevator cables would kill Alex, Coulson would do it without hesitation—and die alongside him.
Tony couldn't help but smirk and tease, "Look at how much everyone hates you."
Alex rolled his eyes at Tony, silently thinking, This is all your fault. And you're enjoying it.
He recalled his peaceful days in Hell's Kitchen—drinking tea, fishing—far from this mess.
Now, he thought the hundred million dollars he'd been paid wasn't nearly enough. He had assumed this mission was a simple rescue, but now it involved retrieving a corpse too. What a nightmare.
"Then I'm leaving. You go talk to Fury alone," Alex said, pretending to press the elevator button for the first floor.
Tony quickly stopped him. "No way. We're going together. You took my money! A few jokes from your employer aren't that bad."
Tony wasn't brave enough to face Nick Fury alone. If he did, he might not come out alive—or at least not unscathed. After all, this was his fault.
Coulson, nearly losing patience with the duo's banter, stood by the elevator door and endured their teasing as if deliberately testing his limits.
Finally, the elevator doors opened, and Coulson stepped out first with a visible sigh of relief.
He led Alex and his group inside and shut the doors behind them.
Inside the office, Nick Fury stared coldly at Alex and Tony, his gaze sharp and calculating as if searching for weaknesses.
Alex paid no mind to the scrutiny and settled comfortably, as if he were in his own living room.
He smirked and said, "No guests? And no drinks? Is this how S.H.I.E.L.D. entertains visitors?"
Fury's voice was deep and commanding. "Enough small talk. State your purpose."
What a pain in the ass. Fury wanted to crush Alex, but somehow he just kept showing up, bringing trouble.
Every mention of Alex's name sent waves of worry through Fury.
Alex shrugged. "We're meeting for the first time, right? No need to be so stiff."
"First, we're here to request Bucky's body on behalf of our financial backer, Tony Stark."
"Second, you promised I could pick up a few things while I was here."
Tony, sitting beside him, nodded.
Fury understood the first demand but was stunned that Alex had the audacity to come to his territory expecting to take things.
He shot Tony a frown, curious about how he knew the truth about his parents' deaths.
That news was barely out in the open; few knew the real cause behind the Howard Starks' demise.
Fury then glanced at Steve Rogers, who was being held captive by Alex behind Tony.
It was clear Alex was using Steve as a bargaining chip. Fury also knew Tony would never join the Avengers under these conditions.
He had to choose between Steve and Tony.
He weighed the options, then said firmly, "We'll release Steve if you return Bucky's body. But previous conditions are off the table. We can't aid the enemy."
His tone left no room for negotiation.
Steve was vital—the soul of the Avengers, the one who united them all.
In comparison, Bucky's body was worthless. Though Steve would hate Fury if he gave it up, Fury didn't care. Steve hated Alex far more.
Fury had once been willing to deal with Alex, but those days were over.
Even though no one fully understood the rare items stored in the S.H.I.E.L.D. vault, Fury would never part with so much as a scrap to Alex.
Alex's voice was calm but firm: "I promise, I'll only borrow the Cosmic Cube for a short while and return it later. Don't worry."
But his words carried undeniable arrogance, as if daring Fury to defy him.
His eyes gleamed sharply, signaling he was serious.
Cosmic Cube? Fury's eyes widened in surprise.
S.H.I.E.L.D. had been studying the Cosmic Cube for some time, but progress was limited.
For Alex to bring it up so casually was startling.
Fury began to question if Alex truly understood its value—or if he had another agenda.
That thought only deepened Fury's resolve not to give in.
Alex stared at Fury thoughtfully and repeated, "I promise, I'm just borrowing the Cosmic Cube. If you don't hand it over, I'll have to take it by force."
The key was that the Space Stone held no value to his system. If it was useless, Alex didn't plan to take it.
After all, the Space Stone would attract Thanos's attention—it was safer left in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s custody as a distraction.
Just as the stalemate lingered, Alex's eyes suddenly flashed red.
A potent aura erupted from him, forcing Fury to recoil.
Alex was ready to unleash his chaos magic to show his determination.
If Fury didn't surrender the Cosmic Cube, Alex threatened to destroy all of S.H.I.E.L.D.
