While facing the joint assault of Captain America, Black Widow, and Hawkeye, Tony calmly considered how to break the deadlock.
Various strategies flashed through Tony's mind rapidly. He knew that if he continued like this, not only would he fail to retrieve Bucky's body, he might even die here.
Though he estimated Nick Fury wouldn't harm him outright, the price to pay would likely be severe.
This was not what Tony wanted to see.
He spoke to the AI Jarvis inside his helmet, "Jarvis, report the mech's status and remaining energy. Then, analyze the weaknesses of these three attackers..."
Before he finished, Tony felt the sting of an arrow narrowly missing him, forcing a quick dodge.
Though Hawkeye's arrow didn't hit, it was a harsh reminder of the threat he faced.
About five seconds later, Jarvis's mechanical voice reported, "Sir, the mech's right leg has sustained critical damage. Energy reserves are below 20%. Another heavy blow will disable flight capability."
"Based on current data, our chance of victory is less than 1%. If we retreat now, success odds rise to 50%. I recommend immediate withdrawal, sir."
Tony frowned, frustration and confusion filling his chest.
His eyes scanned the virtual interface in front of him. "Jarvis, are you sure there's no other option? Is this really a dead end?"
He had to find a way out.
He refused to return defeated. He hadn't yet recovered Bucky's body. If he failed now, by the next attempt, Bucky might have been buried or incinerated.
If Bucky was buried, Tony could still try to exhume him—though he suspected S.H.I.E.L.D. would keep that operation secret.
If cremated, how could Tony present Bucky's remains to honor his parents?
Could he scatter ashes and tell them the murderer was lost due to his own weakness?
Jarvis was silent for a few seconds, then said, "Sir, there is another method with a guaranteed 100% success rate."
Tony's heart leapt.
"Jarvis, tell me. What's the plan?" he asked eagerly, then frowned with doubt.
What method could guarantee perfect success? He wondered silently.
Suddenly, a thought struck him like a lightning bolt.
He stared wide-eyed at Jarvis. "Jarvis, you mean..."
This time Jarvis didn't answer.
Instead, Tony heard, "Calling Alex Ray's number for you."
"Beep… beep… beep…"
Seeing the caller ID, Tony immediately ordered, "Hang up, Jarvis! Hang up!"
He knew Alex Ray's capabilities well. He was certain if Tony called for help, Alex Ray would come without hesitation.
But Tony's pride forbade him from asking for aid.
This time, he wanted to face the challenge on his own—to comfort his parents with his own strength.
Alex Ray had already told him the truth and helped eliminate his father's murderer.
Yet now, Tony couldn't even secure Bucky's body and needed help.
His pride wouldn't allow it.
Since the AI had no solution, Tony resolved to find one himself.
He didn't ask Jarvis again but focused entirely on fending off Captain America, Hawkeye, and Black Widow.
Despite deploying every skill and ounce of strength, Tony struggled against the combined assault.
His iron armor could not withstand their relentless attacks. Gradually, the armor grew battered, showing severe damage in many places.
Jarvis warned urgently, "Warning, warning: armor integrity critically low, energy reserves under 1%."
The cold, mechanical voice was like a splash of ice water, snapping Tony fully awake.
His body gave out; he collapsed to the ground.
Breathing harshly, he cursed his fate. It seemed this was where he would fail.
Watching Iron Man fall,
Agent Coulson immediately flattered Director Fury, "It seems our Iron Man is vulnerable to the Avengers' joint assault."
Director Fury smiled with satisfaction.
This was his first time seeing the Avengers in action, and only three members subdued Tony Stark.
That filled him with confidence in the Avengers' strength.
If all Avengers were mobilized, anyone could take down Tony—and Alex Ray, who had been a concern, would no longer be a threat.
He no longer feared Alex Ray causing trouble; in fact, he looked forward to Alex Ray making noise.
That would give Fury a valid reason to deploy the Avengers to eliminate unstable elements.
He couldn't wait to see Alex Ray begging for mercy in captivity.
Although pleased, Nick Fury still said seriously, "Their teamwork needs refinement. More training is necessary."
Satisfied with the outcome, Fury ordered Coulson, "Take Tony away for recovery. And keep the recording of this fight. If the military mocks us, show them this."
Then Nick Fury prepared to leave.
Tony was ready to give up resistance.
He wasn't worried about what S.H.I.E.L.D. would do. He planned to negotiate with Fury once captured. At worst, he would pay a steep price.
Still, he felt deeply wronged.
At this moment, Captain America put away his shield and slowly approached the fallen Tony.
Looking at him with complicated eyes, Steve said, "Looks like you won't be taking Bucky's body."
Tony's defenses shattered.
He weakly pounded the ground with his right hand, tears escaping.
He hated himself for incompetence and weakness.
He knew the murderer of his father was here—a dead body—but he couldn't take him away.
As Hawkeye and others moved to take Tony away, suddenly a strange ripple distorted the air.
A golden halo appeared, as if a portal torn from another dimension had opened before Tony.
The sudden phenomenon caused Hawkeye and the agents to halt, watching vigilantly.
Then they saw a scene that shocked them.
A figure stepped slowly through the golden ring of light.
He wore casual clothes, a playful smile on his face, as if everything was under control.
"This can't be... is this magic?" an agent muttered in disbelief.
Hawkeye and Natasha exchanged looks of shock and helplessness. It was clear they both recognized the figure.
Trouble was coming.
The newcomer was Alex Ray.
Alex looked down at the prone Tony with a teasing grin. "Hey, isn't this our playboy Tony? Why are you lying down? Must be comfy."
Tony, lying there, heard the familiar voice and forced his eyes open, struggling to sit up.
Seeing Alex Ray, he breathed a sigh of relief.
With Alex around, things seemed manageable.
Still, shame crept in. He hadn't expected to rely on Alex Ray again. He vowed to strengthen his suit when he returned.
A flicker of doubt lingered about how Alex knew he was here and who informed him.
"Why are you here?" Tony finally asked.
