"This can't be true—how did he die?" Steve said, trembling.
The other Avengers looked at Steve with concern. After all, they had heard Captain America's story since they were young, and always thought Steve was invincible—without a weak spot.
Hawkeye and Black Widow approached Steve, gently patting his shoulders and trying to comfort him in their own way.
But Steve seemed lost in grief, unable to pull himself together.
His eyes were empty, unfocused.
He sat motionless, as if time itself had frozen.
Nick Fury didn't answer Steve directly but glanced at Coulson beside him. Coulson immediately understood, quickly opening his tablet and performing a few commands.
Soon, the large screen in the conference room lit up, showing a disturbing image.
Fury stepped behind Steve, resting his hands on his shoulders, then turned to face the screen.
All eyes of the Avengers focused on the display.
The image showed Kingpin's diamond-like body rushing at Bucky Barnes and violently knocking him away.
At that moment, seeing Bucky being thrown back, Steve rose angrily.
He turned sharply to Fury, voice deep and commanding: "Who is this?"
Fury frowned as he studied the footage. It was the first time he had seen this video. He recognized everyone in it—it was all too familiar.
Who didn't know Wilson Fisk, the former underground kingpin? But what shocked Fury was that Fisk had been an ordinary man before. The intelligence community had been investigating him for years; they could not have been mistaken.
That meant Alex Ray had a way to grant people superpowers.
This realization unsettled Fury deeply and made him more wary of Alex Ray.
At the same time, Black Widow and Hawkeye saw the footage and exchanged glances—each filled with shock and confusion.
Steve, seeing no one respond, was about to demand again.
The screen showed Kingpin grabbing Bucky by the neck, speaking on a muted phone call to an unknown party.
Then everyone watched as Kingpin sneered, brutally snapped Bucky's neck, and the footage abruptly cut out.
Steve could no longer control his rage.
He suddenly stood and slammed his fist onto the conference table. The solid wood cracked and splintered under the force.
His eyes blazed like a furious lion's as he locked onto Fury. "Tell me who this man is! I know S.H.I.E.L.D. can find out the truth."
Fury sensed something was off about the video—it looked edited, a malicious fabrication. Why would Fisk kill the Winter Soldier? What about the burning vehicle at the end?
As a seasoned conspirator, Fury caught a familiar scent of manipulation. He decided to calm Steve.
"Calm down. This could be a setup. We need to investigate before making any conclusions," Fury said firmly.
But Steve's anger boiled over.
He grabbed Fury's collar tightly, eyes blazing. "Tell me! I want the truth! That's my friend. I don't care if it's a conspiracy!"
Black Widow and Hawkeye rushed to separate them.
Hawkeye said, "The man in the video is Wilson Fisk, the former crime lord. If you want to find him, Hell's Kitchen is the place."
"But Hell's Kitchen—" Hawkeye started.
Before he could finish, Steve stormed out of the room.
Only one thought consumed him: find Fisk and avenge Bucky.
Black Widow looked at Hawkeye, silently blaming him for telling Steve.
Then she turned to Fury, "Will Steve be in danger? After all, that's Alex Ray's territory. Alex won't let Steve attack his godfather without retaliation."
Black Widow hadn't told Steve earlier because she knew Steve couldn't match Alex Ray. Thinking about Alex's abilities still sent chills down her spine.
Hawkeye shrugged, a bit helpless. "What else can we do? Let Steve be angry. His only friend is dead, crushed by someone himself. If we don't tell him, do you think he'll just let it go?"
He was only human. Anyone would seek revenge in Steve's place.
Fury spoke slowly, "It's fine. I'll assign protection for Steve. For now, let's check Bucky's body—see if there's any clue."
Fury had already decided to call back Carol Danvers from deep space. Though unaware of any behind-the-scenes scheming, war seemed inevitable.
"To all Avengers: be prepared. Our first war may be starting soon."
After saying this, Fury left the room.
The Fantastic Four, new to the Avengers, watched the footage but were unsure how to comfort the others.
No one noticed Ben Grimm's envy as he saw Fisk's diamond-like form on screen.
How great would it be to be a rock man? He hated his current rocky skin.
Susan Storm glanced at Reed Richards, who appeared lost in thought.
"You figured out this is a setup, right?" she asked.
Susan saw through the edited video; if she could tell, so could Reed.
Reed smiled slightly, "Yes, I noticed. Didn't expect S.H.I.E.L.D. to have so many enemies."
He was certain someone aimed to use S.H.I.E.L.D. to eliminate an enemy. What puzzled him was whether Hell's Kitchen's inhabitants were such a threat that the Avengers were deployed to eradicate them.
Susan asked, "Then why not speak up?"
"We just joined the Avengers. No one would support us if we said it aloud. I believe Fury knows—we just wait for orders," Reed explained.
He wasn't the type to accept being powerless.
He secretly hoped the Avengers would suffer serious losses, maybe even Fury himself, so he could rise to command with his charisma.
At that moment, Steve exited the building and saw Tony Stark approaching.
Tony was furious. Without warning, he punched Steve square in the face.
Caught off guard, Steve fell to the ground.
Tony's voice was filled with rage and sorrow: "Hand over Bucky's body!"
Steve, confused, didn't understand why Tony was so angry but knew Bucky's body was in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s custody.
No matter what, Steve would never surrender his friend's remains.
He stood, gripping his shield tightly.
"I will not hand over Bucky's body."
