Chapter 7: Hunting Trip - Part 2

*Vilgax POV*

*Location: Savage Planet*

*Date: 5027th Rotation/1982 Earth Year*

By the time night came, I was already near where I landed my ship, and I began carving out a makeshift cave into the mountain. Sure, I could sleep in my ship, but I'd rather place everything I hunted somewhere out of the way so that it didn't attract the various vicious beasts on this planet. It took a great amount of effort, as while I was able to fight off those skitter-things, my body was still getting used to the planet's gravity, my kind's dormant genes slowly reactivating.

The Chimera Sui Generis were an aquatic species, originally like all others, but we came onto land much later; however, the genes were still there. Just waiting to reactivate them under the right conditions, and this planet's gravity mimicked the deep water pressure, well, to an extent anyway, I couldn't tell if it was a bit more intense or less so, as you couldn't accurately do a one-to-one conversion. That and I couldn't tell how intense the pressure would be on my home planet, as we never really had any reason to go deep underwater for one reason or another.

As I carved out my small home away from home, I made a little shelf on the side to better butcher my kills so I could get the better-tasting parts of the animal. Alongside a makeshift crafting area to create primitive weapons out of the bones of the animals I killed, the skitters, as I've taken to calling them, would only really be useful as a source of nutrition, and perhaps their teeth/jaws, as they had to rip out the flesh of their kills or carcasses somehow.

I placed the ones I killed on the side and ripped the teeth out one by one, examining them, and while there were several small ones, they did have a couple of sizable canines. Those ones might prove to be somewhat useful if I could figure out a way to create some rope or string to attach to my gauntlets. For right now, I just placed them on the side. Hopefully, they will be useful; if not, they were just a trophy I didn't want or need. Once it was all established, I began to skin the creatures I had killed earlier, hoping to find something at least semi-tasteful.

I did so while looking outside, seeing the night sky claim the world and the stars hang over the world. It was beautiful and something you couldn't see on my planet or the one I crashed on; industry tended to do that more heavily on the latter, as my world, while not perfect, tried to help us live in harmony with nature, but...it could never be truly reached.

Once the skitter's skin was off, I tossed it to the side to find use for at a later date and began eating various parts of the animal, to see which one tasted best and which one would probably taste better if properly cooked. The muscles were decent enough, alongside the fat, I didn't bother with the organs, and tossed them outside, hoping to attract one of this planet's bigger predators and kill it. Either that or the skitters could take care of it, either worked.

I ripped and tore my way through the meat, knowing that I couldn't do such a thing in my old body, but my new species diet mostly ate raw fish and other things, combined with some spices and other things to increase the flavor. Kind of like Sushi back on Earth, only more mainstream, I believe is the word. Didn't matter though; it would work for now, and that reminded me that I should get some sleep and figure out how the day-night cycle on the planet works.

Once I was finished eating and dumping the stuff I didn't eat or want to eat outside the cave, a bit far away, I jumped a couple of times, grabbing the side of the rock I parked on, and made my way up to my ship, ready to rest. Approaching the ship, I was greeted with a console, and pressing a few buttons on the side, I opened it up and went inside, ready for bed.

Entering it, I was greeted with the same metallic odor I had lived in for so long, honestly speaking, though it was far better in here than outside, and as I rolled out the mattress I had used for so long, I was reminded just how small it was now. Sighing, I lay down and allowed my body to rest, ready for whatever else this planet would throw at me.

*Date: 5030th Rotation/1985 Earth Year*

Three years...three long years have I spent on this world, hunting and perfecting my art, killing all manner of creatures, except a Rognarr. The one time I encountered such a creature, it ended with my arm being torn off and me barely escaping to fight another day. I did deliver my own significant blow to the beast when I struck out its eye, leaving it half-blind. It took me days to reattach my arm and improve my own cybernetics, and while this planet contained no useful materials to use, my drones were durable enough to withstand the planet's gravity and gather any useful materials from asteroids.

Using the various metals I found, I further improved my cybernetics, first starting on my torn arm, using this chance to work on it myself before reattaching it. I also added in a little self-repairing function, not exactly nanites, but rather it would use any non-essential parts with a way to attach limbs if this type of situation ever happened again, which involved searing the limbs together and forcing them to attach to one another.

It would be painful, but during the heat of battle, having a semi-useable arm is better than nothing.

Alongside this, I encountered two more creatures during my stay here, one long serpentine creature that was a deep crimson, with three eyes and venom that could easily kill most creatures. They could easily take down predators bigger than they were, and I nearly died catching on, its strikes nearly piercing my armor, but the research on them would prove most fascinating and hopefully useful in the long run. I had taken to calling them Crimson Pythons, due to their odd resemblance to the ones I saw online in my human life.

The second was more...dog-like, I believe would be the term, as the creature was about the size of a great dane and had four legs, mimicking a dog. The only difference was their crocodile-like heads, black scales, and lack of a tail. These things I called Sobek's, named after an Egyptian deity, and were tough, almost as tough as the Rognarr, but far more synchronized when it came to pack tactics. I still had scars from where they bit me and tore off my armor, with a bit of my flesh that had slowly healed over time.

Their skulls now adorned my cave walls that I was currently sitting in, sharpening a makeshift spear I had created using various leg/arm bones, alongside the skin of creatures I had butchered to tie it all together. I also made use of the various fangs I had gathered to create the edge, knowing the material was going to be best used for taking down a Rognarr. In theory, at least, as I highly doubt these creatures tried to kill a Rognarr to get a good meal out of it.

I had other weapons as well, mostly spears and a few knives/swords, but I couldn't figure out the best way to make a bow, so I used the material elsewhere. Mostly to repair my armor and keep it all in one piece, using the various bones as makeshift armor till I could properly repair it/upgrade it off-world.

I, of course, improved physically over time as well, now more used to the planet's intense gravity thanks to my species now activated traits. Staring outside, I saw that the day had come after five of my world's regualr days, which were close enough to Earth's that it was essentially the same calendar system or similiar anyway. I knew that this day would be the day I kill a Rognarr, whether or not I physically take them down would be another story, and a good starting point to see where I need to improve/upgrade my body.

Going outside, I grabbed some of the organs from the pile I had made over the ears, knowing that these beasts eat anything as long as they can eat it. Although that didn't mean it wouldn't attract other animals, it didn't matter, though, because it would attract one of those Rognarr to it, seeing a free meal. I strapped the spears I made to my back and put the various knives and swords on my side, but for the first bit of my fight, I would fight barehanded to see if I was strong enough yet to take on a Viltrumite.

As I walked across the plains, I could see the signs of my various battles over the years, the pain and suffering this planet has caused me. The beast that ran away at the mere sight of me, knowing that I have killed so many of them over my three years here. I dragged my body across the plane. I could feel my body shaking in fear, knowing what happened the last time I fought such a beast.

That didn't matter in that moment, as I stood in the center of the place I encountered that beast, the place where I found the Viltrumite's body. The body had long since either been eaten or rot away to near nothingness. I grabbed the bait and tossed it for all the world to see and smell, with it being the freshest one I could find.

I don't know how long I stood there as various skitters or other animals tried to take a bite out of the bait, only to become part of it themselves, or I just scared them off. That's when I saw it, the faint outline of a humanoid figure, its red scales shining in the sunlight, and as it stepped out, I was greeted with a familiar face.

It was the creature who had maimed me so long ago. I saw the scarred right side of its face where I had taken its eye out, and it was now littered with scars. Clearly, the Rognarr had been through hell since our last encounter, as I'm guessing being half-blind didn't help it hunt or survive among its own kind. It let out a roar full of rage and hate directed at me, and I cracked my neck as the beast charged forward, alone and without its pack members for some reason.

I grabbed the beast's hands, and the ground cracked beneath us as the cylinders coming out of my arms sent a surge of pain through my body.

"So then, ready for round 2!"
