Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Shopping at the Supermarket Together
Jiang Yurou looked at Xinan with disbelief in her eyes. Could it really be that she was wrong, and Cheng Yi truly didn't like Xinan?
But if Cheng Yi didn't like Xinan, with his personality, why would he marry her?
Jiang Yurou sighed and took a glance at Xinan before asking, "Do you still like him now?"
"I..." Xinan hesitated. She was sure she still liked Cheng Yi, but now she just couldn't bring herself to say the words "I like him."
"What are you two doing? Come over and sing!" Tan Bo had approached at some point, interrupting their conversation.
Jiang Yurou looked at Xinan and asked, "Nannan, what song will you sing? I'll choose it for you."
Xinan shook her head, "No need, you guys sing."
Singing was what she was least skilled at. She only knew a few songs, and she always sang off-key.
"Don't be like that, isn't singing what KTV is all about? It's no fun if you two don't sing," Jiang Yurou said, excluding Cheng Yi because she knew the chances of him singing were slimmer than Mars colliding with Earth.
"Yeah, sing one," Tan Bo also said.
"Then help me choose Zhou Jielun's 'Dandelion's Promise'," she said.
"Alright." After saying that, Jiang Yurou went off to choose the song smilingly.
Cheng Yi was sitting next to Xinan, with only two seats between them. He reached for his pack of cigarettes, lit one, and took a light drag. The smoke filled the air as he squinted slightly.
This song was relatively within Xinan's capabilities. Although she sang with a plain voice, it wasn't unpleasant to listen to.
When the song was over, Jiang Yurou and Tan Bo applauded very considerately and shouted, "Nannan, sing another one."
Xinan passed the microphone to Jiang Yurou, refusing to sing again. So, Jiang Yurou had no choice but to choose another song herself.
With Jiang Yurou and Tan Bo, these two live wires, there was no fear the atmosphere would turn cold.
After they got tired of singing, Tan Bo asked the waiter to bring over four glasses and to open the bottle of red wine that Cheng Yi had brought earlier.
After pouring the wine, Tan Bo held the glass up to his nose, took a whiff, then sipped, and said, "This wine's not bad!"
Xinan had watched Cheng Yi pay; the wine cost six figures, so of course, it was good.
"Really? Let me try." Hearing this, Jiang Yurou also took a sip from her glass and nodded, "Indeed, it's nice. The taste is pure and quite light."
Hearing them praise it, Xinan wanted to give it a try too. She just about reached for a glass when Cheng Yi stopped her.
"Don't drink," he said with a somewhat stern tone.
Xinan retracted her hand, looking embarrassed.
Jiang Yurou then said, "Brother Yi, this wine doesn't have a strong aftereffect. Let Nannan have a taste."
Cheng Yi replied indifferently, "She can't drink."
Girls can't drink for primarily one reason—they're on their period. Jiang Yurou immediately understood and sympathetically looked at Xinan, who had missed out on a good bottle of wine.
After Cheng Yi mentioned it, Xinan also remembered that she was indeed on her period and really shouldn't drink.
In the end, Xinan could only watch the other three savoring the fine wine.
Cheng Yi suddenly left for a bit and returned with a bottle of milk in his hand.
"Drink this." Cheng Yi placed the milk in front of Xinan.
"Thank you," Xinan said as she accepted the milk, feeling a rush of joy in her heart—it was warm. A warm current surged through her heart. Had he specifically asked the waiter to heat it up?
Seeing this, Tan Bo joked, "Ah Yi, why don't I see you getting me a bottle of milk too?"
Cheng Yi gave him a cold look and uttered a single word, "Scram."
"I guess I gave my heart to the wrong person after all…"
Cheng Yi stopped paying attention to him and just drank his alcohol.
Cheng Yi had a habit when drinking; he would shake his glass a few times in his hand, maybe without realizing it himself.
But Xinan had noticed it a long time ago and quietly remembered this little quirk of his.
It was unexpected that even after all this time, he still had this habit when drinking.
"After we graduated from university, everyone went their separate ways. It's been a while since we all gathered like this," Tan Bo suddenly said, feeling sentimental.
"Indeed, let's invite Brother Ji Bai and Sister Shasha next time, to meet up all together," Jiang Yurou suggested.
Xinan smiled and said, "Sure."
Only Cheng Yi remained silent, quietly sipping his drink. He seemed indifferent, but in reality, a hint of bitterness had started to well up inside him.
It seemed that every time Han Jibai's name came up, her face would light up with a smile.
When it was time to leave, Tan Bo escorted Jiang Yurou home first, while Xinan followed Cheng Yi out of the private room at a slow pace.
"You've been drinking, let me drive," Xinan said softly.
Cheng Yi grunted in acknowledgment, handing over the car keys, but he didn't lift his eyes to look at her.
All the way, Cheng Yi's expression was very subdued. His head rested against the seat, his eyes slightly closed, appearing to be sleeping, but in fact, his mind was replaying the conversation between Xinan and Jiang Yurou.
He had heard everything. When Jiang Yurou asked Xinan if she liked him, his heart quivered, wanting to know the answer, yet afraid to hear the one he least wanted to hear.
But in the end, he didn't get that answer … which was perhaps for the best. At least he could still fantasize that maybe she didn't like Han Jibai anymore … and that she had a little bit of affection for him.
When he went abroad initially, he was genuinely prepared to forget her. But no matter how far away from her he was, or how long he hadn't seen her, he still liked only her …
So he came back …
Not having her heart but having her presence was good too, at least she would always be by his side.
They say familiarity breeds fondness, so he decided to wait until the day she genuinely fell for him …
Everything had been going according to his plan until Han Jibai returned to the country.
Every time something related to Han Jibai came up, the relationship between him and Xinan seemed to crumble instantly.
That matter was like a demon in his heart …
He knew, no matter how much he didn't want to admit it, that he actually still cared deeply.
He really wanted to open his eyes and ask Xinan directly if she still liked Han Jibai, if she liked him …
But he didn't have the courage; he was afraid to hear his heart shatter into a million pieces.
When they passed a supermarket, Xinan remembered they were out of groceries at home.
Xinan found a parking spot, thinking Cheng Yi had fallen asleep. Just when she was about to wake him, he opened his eyes.
Their eyes met just in time.
Xinan paused in shock for a moment before slowly saying, "I'd like to go get some groceries first."
Cheng Yi stared at her face for a while before slowly shifting his gaze away, then softly grunted in acknowledgment.
Xinan had never thought that she would one day go grocery shopping with Cheng Yi, much less buy food together.
Xinan selected vegetables at the front, while Cheng Yi pushed the cart behind her.
When checking out, Xinan suddenly noticed many extra items in the cart. When had Cheng Yi picked them? Didn't he dislike snacks?
