Chapter 125: Chapter 127: Shirou Reality Marble
Regarding Shirou Emiya's final victory with his Reality Marble, aside from magi like Aoko whose thoughts have been solidified, most ordinary viewers had already suspected it.
After all, Shinji Matou isn't the type of director who likes to waste time.
Perhaps the tense deadlines of Fate/stay night and Fate/Zero instilled in him a habit of ensuring that every shot serves a purpose.
Shinji's fans are also aware of this habit of their idol, the director, so they never thought that all the buildup around Archer was pointless.
In the Unlimited Blade Works (UBW) route, Archer is undoubtedly the antithesis of Shirou Emiya, but at the same time, he is also Shirou's mentor.
According to common storytelling conventions, the protagonist is bound to learn the mentor's ultimate technique.
And what is Archer's ultimate technique? It's none other than the Reality Marble!
But knowing this doesn't stop the audience from wanting to see it!
In the vast majority of commercial stories, audiences can predict the ending from the beginning, but that doesn't stop them from enjoying the story.
Of course, the premise is that the story is told well.
The same story, told by different people, can evoke completely different feelings from the audience.
Just look at the difference between the theatrical version of Justice League and the director's cut.
Shinji may not yet be a master filmmaker, but the stories he tells have never disappointed the audience.
If one were to evaluate the script of UBW, Shinji himself might summarize it as "clichéd."
This "cliché" is not only reflected in it being a traditional tale of a boy becoming a hero, but also in the near-formulaic Japanese-style hot-blooded battle where the protagonist rises after a fall.
Because Shirou Emiya is a novice magus, his battles in Fate/stay night are almost the same formula with different variations: he always starts at a disadvantage, inevitably suffers severe injuries, then recovers using Avalon, and finally, he powers up to defeat his opponent.
Thanks to a certain masterful writer, despite the story being clichéd, it still has a strong sense of immersion, making it extremely satisfying.
As a director standing on the shoulders of giants, all Shinji needs to do is capture the essence of the story and bring it to life on screen.
Moreover, Shinji has one advantage that the original writer did not—the "cliché" implies that the trope has been overused, but the audience in this world hasn't grown tired of it yet.
So when Shirou Emiya falls again and again on screen, countless viewers hold their breath in anticipation for him.
Younger viewers even jump up, cheering for Shirou.
"Come on!"
"Don't give up, Shirou!"
"Keep going, red-haired aniki! Don't lose to that flashy show-off!"
Just like Ultraman always responds to the children's calls, Shirou Emiya, facing the seemingly invincible Gilgamesh, does not choose to give up.
His heartbeat weakens, his lungs nearly cease to function, his windpipe freezes up, and even his vision blurs to the point where he can no longer see Gilgamesh's golden hair.
At this point, Shirou Emiya's body is a complete wreck, making one wonder if he still retains the basic functions of a human.
But even so, Shirou Emiya does not give up, and he never will!
"Hahahahahahaha!!!" Facing the battered Shirou Emiya, the enthusiastic citizen Mr. Gilgamesh lets out a joyful laugh. "You really are an unwavering hypocrite. Ah, for that alone, I commend you... kid!"
Thirty Noble Phantasms unfold—not many, but enough to kill Shirou Emiya.
"The game's over, kid!"
Gilgamesh's crimson eyes radiate murderous intent—he's grown bored.
Yet, facing this inevitable death, Shirou Emiya smiles.
"Hmph, hypocrisy? That's not so bad... After all, I am indeed a faker."
He reaches out with one hand into the air, closes one eye, and focuses all his attention inward.
"Sorry, I've misunderstood all along."
Slowly, Shirou tightens his left hand around his outstretched right hand.
"My sword creation isn't about forging swords. After all, something that intricate is beyond me~"
"What I need to do is just one thing—make my heart take shape!"
Staring at Gilgamesh, Shirou Emiya, with the hopes of countless viewers on his shoulders, recites the incantation:
"I am the bone of my sword."
The moment the audience hears this, they erupt into cheers.
They finally witnessed the scene they had been eagerly anticipating, the moment when Shirou Emiya truly shone.
"Amazing!" Aoko exclaimed, squeezing the bag of chips in her hand until it burst, sending the air and chips flying all over the room.
But at that moment, neither Alice nor Touko cared; their eyes were glued to the TV screen.
"Enough of this nonsense!" Gilgamesh, still unaware of the gravity of the situation, maintained his arrogant demeanor as he casually launched his Noble Phantasms at Shirou Emiya, intending to finish him off in one swift move.
Faced with the storm of swords, a shield made of pink petals emerged, blocking the barrage of Noble Phantasms.
Despite the shield beginning to shatter the moment it appeared, it steadfastly fulfilled its duty, keeping Shirou safe from the rain of weapons.
"What?!" For the first time in this battle, Gilgamesh was shocked.
He increased his output, determined to break through.
Compared to the anxious King of Heroes, Shirou Emiya had already found his inner calm.
He only needed to focus on completing one task.
"Steel is my body, and fire is my blood."
"I have created over a thousand blades."
As the second and third lines of the incantation were spoken, the magic overflowing from Shirou's body whipped up a fierce wind.
The magical circuits in Shirou's arms had never shone so brightly.
"Will he make it in time?" Aoko asked, perhaps to Touko and Alice, or perhaps to herself.
"He'll definitely make it!" Touko grinned fiercely, no longer lounging on the sofa but sitting upright with her fists clenched—her interest piqued by the TV drama.
"We spent almost two weeks working tirelessly on this sequence. There's no way he won't make it!"
"I don't want to hear it! I don't want to hear it! No spoilers!" Aoko shouted, covering her ears.
Bang!
Aoko was hit square on the forehead by a magical bullet.
"Quiet," Alice said coldly.
"…," Aoko rubbed her reddening forehead, not daring to speak further.
"Unaware of loss, nor aware of gain."
The chant continued on the screen.
"It's not breaking through?!"
Feeling the overwhelming magical power altering reality, Gilgamesh began to panic, yet his pride wouldn't let him use Ea to end the fight quickly.
"This is what happens when you care too much about appearances. You start something, and no matter how painful it gets, you have to see it through, even if it means you end up as the loser in the end. Isn't that right, Gil?"
Enkidu smiled as he glanced at the person beside him—Gilgamesh, who was bound by the Chains of Heaven, his eyes forced open with toothpicks.
"Enkidu, you're going too far!" Gilgamesh, now only able to move his mouth, let out an earth-shaking roar. "If you want to watch, just watch by yourself! Why drag me into this?!"
Gilgamesh struggled, but at this point, he was weaker than a worm.
At least a worm could wriggle; all Gilgamesh could do was watch TV against his will.
"This is quite a sight to behold," said Cu Chulainn, struggling to hold back his laughter alongside EMIYA and some other.
They were among the few who, having seen the final episode of UBW, were more focused on Gilgamesh's predicament than the show.
After all, they could watch the recorded episode anytime, but seeing Gilgamesh in this state was a rare opportunity.
"You're all dead once I'm free!" Gilgamesh, hearing their laughter, ground his teeth in anger.
"Withstood pain to create many weapons, waiting for one's arrival."
The incantation had reached its critical moment, and the magic inside Shirou's body surged violently.
The circuits all over his body were now fully activated, and the originally green mana had turned into a boiling gold.
"Onii-chan, were you really like this back then?" Illya asked, looking up curiously.
"Hmm… how should I put it," Shirou scratched his cheek, "With Shinji's help, I managed to pull it off. I really didn't think it would turn out like this."
"Hm?" Illya, intrigued by Shirou's evasive answer, wanted to ask more.
But with the TV scene being more important at the moment, she held back her questions.
"I have no regrets. This is the only path."
The chant on the screen had reached its final stage.
The audience held their breath, waiting for the moment to come.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa! Shinji really went all out!" In the Clock Tower, Waver Velvet, sneaking a peek at the Japanese premiere, almost buried his head in the TV.
"It's coming!" Aoko cheered excitedly in Tokyo.
"Ah, what a beautiful scene," EMIYA smiled contentedly at Type-Moon's headquarters.
"Onii-chan, this is definitely your coolest moment!" Illya declared with certainty at the Emiya residence.
"I had so few scenes compared to the movie," Arturia pouted as she ate her cream puff at the Matou residence.
"My whole life was—Unlimited Blade Works!"
In an instant, everything was shattered and everything was reborn.
The raging flames formed a barrier, creating a new realm.
The entire world changed.
The crimson sky was like a setting sun, the land barren, stretching into an endless wasteland, with countless swords scattered in disarray.
It was undoubtedly a desolate world.
There were no living creatures here, only swords resting in eternal slumber.
This was Shirou Emiya's world—Unlimited Blade Works!
"A Reality Marble... Tch, so this is your power!" The golden king took a step forward. Countless swords floated behind him.
Though Gilgamesh still hadn't used Ea, he was finally serious.
"There's nothing to be surprised about. These are all fakes. To you, they're nothing more than worthless imitations."
Shirou, having completed the world's creation, sneered as he drew his sword.
"If you truly believe that your originals are superior, then defeat me right here and now!"
The young man walked forward.
He was up against the golden king who possessed countless treasures, while he himself was a mere imitator with nothing.
"Let's see if you have enough weapons, King of Heroes!"
The young man taunted the king.
"How dare you, mongrel!"
Countless Noble Phantasms appeared. Gilgamesh accepted Shirou Emiya's challenge.
In the wasteland, the two opposing sword masters began their final battle.
