Chapter 124: Chapter 126: Touko: The Best Thing in the World is Lying on the Couch Watching UBW
At this time, the fans of Unlimited Blade Works (UBW) are still unaware that their favorite show will end after just one season.
From the way the story has been progressing, many fans can tell that the Holy Grail War will conclude within this season.
However, they believe that a series as popular as UBW will undoubtedly have a second, third, or even fourth season.
Many viewers have already imagined how the story will continue—focusing on the journey of Shirou Emiya becoming a Heroic Spirit.
Unfortunately for them, Shinji never intended for that to happen.
The Fate/stay night (FSN) storyline will wrap up entirely this year.
As for the sequel story, Fate/Hollow Ataraxia (FHA), Shinji plans to wait a couple of years before producing it.
Given the reach of the Heaven's Feel (HF) route and the close connections FHA has with all three routes, he wants to ensure the audience is more familiar with the entire trilogy before diving into FHA.
The show that will follow UBW is The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II, which is essentially Waver Velvet's adventure story.
This series is positioned differently from UBW and HF—it's more of a fan-oriented side story that expands the world-building, so its audience will likely be much smaller than that of FSN.
The reason Shinji hasn't started filming The Case Files yet is that he hasn't decided who the lead actor will be. In any case, it's highly unlikely that Waver himself would take on the role.
After all, The Case Files is a rather extensive series, potentially spanning several seasons.
Once The Case Files is completed, there's still Lord El-Melloi II's Adventures to produce.
Shinji imagines that if this series does well, it could even become a long-running magical detective drama similar to Furuhata Ninzaburō.
However, for that to happen, the choice of the lead actor becomes a crucial issue.
Waver is an incredibly busy man; there's no way he could take the time each year to collaborate with Shinji on a show.
Even if Waver agreed, Kayneth definitely wouldn't.
The Modern Magecraft Theory Department has so many tasks, and if Waver doesn't handle them, who will?
Kayneth doing those tedious, detail-oriented tasks himself? Impossible.
As for the protagonist of The Case Files, Shinji currently has two ideas in mind: either let Yan Qing take on Waver's appearance and act as the lead, or find a professional actor to play the role.
He'll need to discuss these options with Waver further.
The viewers, of course, are completely unaware of these behind-the-scenes details.
For now, they're eagerly discussing and anticipating the latest and final episode of UBW.
"It's finally ending, huh? I'm both excited and a bit sad," Aoko grumbled to Alice. "The last episode was all about the sword fight between Saber and Assassin. It was amazing, but it felt like something was missing."
"After such a battle, it left me wanting more. I'm so eager to see the next episode, but knowing it's the final one makes me want to savor it."
Alice nodded in agreement. "In that case, Aoko, why don't you skip the broadcast tonight and wait for the DVD release? That way, I wouldn't have to come to Tokyo to watch it. Home is way more comfortable than here."
By the end of her comment, Alice's voice carried a slight hint of resentment.
At this moment, the two female magi were sitting in the living room of their rented house in Tokyo, waiting for the new episode of UBW to air.
The reason they didn't choose to watch it at Alice's house was that Aoko's grandfather had already started to become suspicious of her regular weekly visits to the Tohno mansion.
Aoko knew all too well that if her grandfather found out she was watching Shinji Matou's drama, the Aozaki household might just experience a category 16 super typhoon.
Anticipating her grandfather's reaction, Aoko decided to set up a Young Magus Club in Tokyo.
Officially, it was a place for Japan's rising magical talents to discuss magecraft, but in reality, it was an offline fan club for Shinji Matou.
Of course, this club in Tokyo wasn't as convenient as the Tohno mansion, but Aoko was willing to put up with the hassle to gain a little entertainment in the otherwise tedious life of a magician.
After the club was established, Lord Aozaki suspicions about Aoko's frequent trips to Tokyo vanished.
He even interpreted her regular visits to the Tohno mansion as preparation for setting up the club.
In fact, he was quite proud of Aoko for founding the club.
"They say all the young folks have been bewitched by that Matou brat, but my Aoko has united a group of upstanding young people! They're the future of Japan's magical community!"
Whether he would stick to that proud declaration or prepare for a funeral when he found out what the club was really about remained to be seen.
Today, besides Aoko and Alice, the club also had an unexpected guest: Touko.
The two younger women were thrilled by this surprise visit.
Aoko had long wanted to chat with her sister, and Alice was eager to get some firsthand information about Shinji.
After all, Fuyuki City remained a mysterious place to them both, and they were curious to hear what Touko had to say about the so-called "Modern Magic City" (as Fuyuki was known in the magical world).
Despite having visited Fuyuki City once, Alice had been careful not to approach any areas with magical energy to avoid being mistaken for a threat by the local families.
She had even tried to recruit Touko into her fan club several times before, but Touko had never shown much interest.
That's why Alice was curious when Touko suddenly joined them today.
"Touko, why the sudden interest in my fan club? You weren't interested before when I recommended it," Alice asked.
"Well, that's because you didn't sell it to me the right way!" Touko replied, smirking. "If you'd told me earlier that you had such a cool secret base, I would've joined a long time ago."
"Is Shinji really that stingy?" Aoko's eyes widened.
"Hmm… Well, the perks I get from him are pretty good," Touko replied, lounging on the sofa in a relaxed, almost comical pose. "But my office is filled with half-finished tasks, and it's frustrating to look at."
'So, you're treating this place like a vacation villa?'
Alice couldn't help but feel a little used by her old friend.
She pretended to ask casually, "But you've never cared before. You used to make a mess of your workshop and still sleep like a baby."
"Well, back then, I was the boss. I could finish work whenever I wanted," Touko retorted. "But not anymore. Shinji's got this thing about deadlines—you don't get your reward if you don't meet them."
"And since when do you follow orders so obediently?" Aoko asked, incredulous.
Her sister had always been fiercely independent, hating anything that forced her to conform.
If Touko had been just a bit more tactful, she might never have had such a falling out with their grandfather.
"What can I say? Shinji's got a way of making requests that are impossible to refuse," Touko sighed, sounding genuinely resigned.
Unless there was a major disaster like the one where Servants wreaked havoc at the company, Shinji rarely punished his employees directly.
Instead, he preferred to outline the rewards for meeting objectives, so naturally, failing to meet them meant getting nothing.
And those rewards were often precisely what the employees needed most.
For Touko, it was the opportunity to learn ancient magecraft from the Servants.
So, no matter how frustrated she was with Shinji, Touko had to grit her teeth and complete her tasks.
"Shinji's a strong-willed man. I can't seem to resist him," Touko admitted with a sigh.
"..."
Even though Alice understood what Touko meant, she couldn't help but feel that something about the statement was off.
On the other hand, Aoko had already focused her attention on the TV.
This was a rare opportunity to relax outside of home, and she wasn't about to miss a second of the show.
As for her sister, Touko, there would be plenty of time to catch up after the episode ended.
◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆
The final episode of UBW picked up right where the last one left off, with Shirou Emiya getting thoroughly beaten by Gilgamesh.
It's a running theme in Type-Moon stories that the male protagonists have a "getting beaten up" attribute, always in a state of being injured, never fully recovering.
Just think of Shirou Emiya in the Fate route, constantly injured, and in UBW, nearly getting himself killed multiple times.
Like now, for example—facing an opponent like Gilgamesh, whom even Saber might struggle to defeat, Shirou decides to go it alone.
When Saber finishes her battle and rushes over to assist, he outright refuses her help.
"That guy really doesn't know his limits, does he?" Aoko commented, just five minutes into the episode.
She wasn't necessarily expecting a response; it was more of an offhand observation.
But when friends watch a show together, it's no fun if one person makes a comment and no one responds.
So, Touko smirked and replied, "It's not about not knowing his limits. Let me tell you—"
"Stop!" Aoko raised her hand. "No spoilers! That would ruin the fun."
Alice smirked dismissively. "Do you really need spoilers? The gap between them is so wide that he needs some serious plot armor to create a miracle."
Apparently, Alice had been spending more time online lately—she even knew phrases like "plot armor."
"Is he really going to use his Reality Marble?" Aoko wasn't slow; she immediately figured out what might happen.
"Doesn't Shinji worry that his friend might get preserved in formalin by the Clock Tower?"
Although Aoko's rebellious streak rivaled her sister's, her views on magecraft were much more conservative, thanks to her grandfather's influence.
"This is a TV show, not reality," Alice shot back with a disdainful glance. "Are you trying to find realism in a fictional story?"
"True…"
Aoko scratched her head awkwardly.
Alice's explanation made Aoko realize she had been too hung up on realism.
The next moment, she imagined the scene of Shirou Emiya deploying his Reality Marble against Gilgamesh's Gate of Babylon, and…
The very thought of it excited her!
Especially since Aoko was a magician and knew exactly what a Reality Marble entailed, her heart was already racing with anticipation.
"I want to see the Reality Marble now!"
The normally serious, professional, and composed magician Aoko quickly switched sides, shaking the TV in an attempt to fast-forward to the part where Shirou unleashes his Reality Marble.
"Don't you dare break the TV!" Touko scolded, delivering a karate chop to her sister's head.
Aoko let out a yelp of pain, instantly silenced.
