Chapter 300: Changing situation
Through his Spatial Sight, Eryndor saw that the group of students, ranging from peak stage of Qi Condensation realm to stage one of Foundation Building realm were all launching attacks on something.
Yes, something.
Because he couldn't see anything there through his Spatial Sight.
Eryndor suspected that for the first time ever, his Spatial Sight had failed.
Will I be able to see it through my naked eyes?
His eyes narrowed, but gave up on immediately coming in the sight of that group of disciples.
Because he saw something.
Corpses.
Several corpses of disciples lay around at different spots.
From the looks of various injuries on them, it looked like it wasn't done by any beast.
They were killed by that group of disciples?
I might be killed as well if I rashly enter their range.
Eryndor let out the breath he was subconsciously holding and calmed himself down before thinking again.
What is the most probable situation for this to take place?
His settled down mind immediately came up with a possibility.
There must have been some indication of a treasure.
It caused a lot of disciples to gather together.
However, they obviously didn't want to share the treasure with others.
But then again, no one had the confidence to kill everyone else.
Then they must have decided to lessen the numbers eh?
The weaker ones without any strong partner to rely on were killed, the strong ones with numerous enemies were killed and so on and so forth.
However, that treasure seems to have a shield around it which even my Spatial Sight can't see.
They all are attacking this shield to get the treasure inside?
Then there would be another round of bloodshed depending on who has the treasure?
Eryndor took in the entire scene once again and felt that his guess had a high chance of being correct.
Should I continue waiting then?
As he deliberated over this matter, he didn't let his sight linger on that spot but began looking at the surroundings to see if there were any other clues which existed.
Within just a few seconds, his Spatial Sight caught something.
There was a trap.
Perfectly hidden, likely through the use of some array formation since he could see the corresponding designs as well.
There should be a level to array formations just like pills and weapons.
However, the line seems to be even more blurred than the pills and weapons, given how the majority of them don't really use the tag of 'level' behind their name like pills and weapons.
I've read somewhere that categorizing array formations is so difficult because even someone at level four could be defeated by a person using array formation which was made through a mix of level three and level four materials.
Hmmm…
Could it be that my Spatial Sight is considered at level four since that's the level of my abilities?
And if there are concealment or trap based array formations which are above that level, then I wouldn't be able to see them?
Hmmmm….
Is that why I wasn't able to see that shield?
It's above level four?
Eryndor thought about something when his thought process reached that point.
Wait, in the information provided by the black market, there was one such piece which talked about the formation of the mind based treasure.
For now, it is causing an unusual situation of syncing the thoughts of several disciples in random locations.
Is it this spot?
Has the treasure already finished forming and resides behind the shield? How did the shield form though?
Shouldn't naturally forming treasures simply just… exist?
Why do they have a shield surrounding it?
Eryndor thought of a few possibilities.
First, it isn't a naturally born treasure mind based treasure.
Second, that mind based treasure had some other unknown factors behind it which the black market failed to notice.
Third, it is not a treasure, but something else entirely.
Eryndor stopped speculating and refocused his attention on the group of disciples.
They were still attacking in the same direction, and all their attacks would immediately encounter something invisible, splashing apart and dispersing immediately.
However, through the accuracy of the vision of his Spatial Sight, he was still able to determine that the invisible shield was getting weaker and weaker.
However, there's also the problem if the disciples themselves can sustain the expenditure of their Qi till the shield breaks or not.
A few minutes later, he got the answer.
The disciples couldn't hold on.
Of course, it wasn't as if their Qi storage was completely empty, but that due to their wariness against each other, as soon as one of them stopped attacking with the reason of conserving their Qi, the rest stopped as well.
Among the hostile parties, they couldn't be empty of Qi right?
There was a high probability that they kept at least thirty to fifty percent of their Qi when retreating.
So they'll start again after recovering their Qi?
Eryndor glanced at them, and slid down the tree, taking a seat himself.
He wanted to keep hiding behind the scenes, and take actions based on the situation.
They could indeed break the shield this way by taking turns between resting and attacking, but this would only work if the shield doesn't have a function of self healing.
Eryndor had seen plenty of array formations back on Earth which had this function.
Due to constant battles and wars, it was inefficient, and cumbersome to keep repairing the shields after every fight, not to mention the amount of workforce needed.
So they used their creative minds to make such an array formation which would heal itself over time.
It seemed that the group had also thought of the same problem, as they began talking among themselves and quickly divided into three groups.
One would attack the shield, one would rest, and one would protect the attackers from the ones who were resting.
They would keep rotating their positions so that everyone could rest, and the shield wouldn't get any free time.
This is taking so long.
Eryndor thought after an hour as he watched the now tired disciples.
In the past hour, it wasn't as if no new disciples had arrived, but this time the group didn't kill anyone even if the newcomer had low strength.
It was because they realised that this shield was extremely tough to break, and would need more members to attack at the same time.
Eryndor still hadn't moved though.
It was clear that someone among the initial group of disciples had a large range of surveillance.
All of the new disciples had been spotted by that person and then the group had moved together to 'invite' the person to attack the shield together.
The newcomers definitely hadn't walked into it themselves.
At one point there was even a disciple who was arriving from his own direction.
In that situation, Eryndor had to run away from the location for a few minutes.
True, he had the Breath of Hidden Serpent concealment cultivation art, but who knew how the surveillance art of that person worked?
What if it worked on a factor which Eryndor's concealment art didn't hide?
So well, he didn't take the risk in such a grave situation.
Anyway, he could still see the entire proceedings by simply extending his Spatial Sight even further.
The entire course of events kept repeating over the next two to three hours, before Eryndor finally saw a change.
The shield broke.
However, that wasn't all.
It seemed that a shockwave was released as soon as the shield broke down.
The first ones to be hit were naturally the ones who were attacking.
With extraordinary reflexes, they were able to activate their defensive cultivation arts in time, but it wasn't enough.
Massive internal damage, instantaneous overpressure trauma, burns and even the debris damage which were flung away by the shockwave all caused the disciples in the attacking position to die immediately upon impact.
Even if their defensive cultivation arts were magnificent and their body had been tempered to a high level, they still suffered grievous injuries which left them laying on the ground, wailing in pain.
The ones in the protecting position suffered next, but the shockwave, having gone through the first line of disciples, was clearly weaker.
Their defensive cultivation arts broke down, before passing through their bodies.
Weaker ones suffered light internal damage, while the stronger ones felt some pain.
The safest were the ones who were resting, as the shockwave had completely died down before it even reached them.
No one had the mind to glance at the others once they looked in the direction of the shield.
A square sized area was showing a completely different scenario compared to the surroundings.
It was as if it was a gateway to some other place.
All of them including Eryndor already knew that the shield was square sized based on where their attacks were landing, and where they were hitting the empty ground of forest.
Seeing the similarly square shaped window leading to somewhere else and acting like a gateway, they knew that this was what the shield was hiding.
While Eryndor was contemplating if he should enter, he saw a few disciples take up their weapons and run inside without caring about anything else.
A few kind ones dropped healing pills in the mouth of seriously injured wailing disciples, and marched forward.
They were kind, sure, but that didn't mean they were willing to forgo the opportunity in front of them.
This was the world of Cultivation where everyone looked out for themselves first.
Eryndor looked on as eventually all the disciples entered, even the seriously injured ones, and saw the door slowly closing.
He made his decision.
