Chapter 144: A Resolve to Die!
Hunter Association Headquarters.
"So... that was a fake Chairman?" Ginta large eyes were filled with disbelief—he never expected the Chairman to be an imposter.
"That was Akira Nen beast? His Nen beasts can even replicate others' Nen abilities?"
Even the usually composed Cheadle, the Dog of the Twelve Zodiac, couldn't maintain her calm, startled by the sudden twist.
Even she had believed it was the real Chairman earlier!
After all, he had even used [Hyakushiki Kannon].
Among Nen Users, especially seasoned Hunters like them, it was common knowledge. [Hyakushiki Kannon] was Chairman Netero Nen abilities, deeply tied to his personal style.
Every member of the Twelve Zodiac wore expressions of shock, though Pyon and Gel were slightly better off.
Having interacted with Akira before, they had gradually grown accustomed to his surprises.
Akira lived up to his title—he was a "legend."
With him, no ability or feat was beyond comprehension.
'Not only can he mimic others, but he can even replicate their Nen abilities...'
'And the replicated strength isn't far off from the original?'
Pariston ever-present smile remained, but his mind raced as he analyzed the abilities Akira had displayed.
The more he analyzed, the more stunned he became.
Because this was outright broken! Akira showed no visible weaknesses!
'No!'
'There's still more!'
Pariston recalled the previous incident when 'Netero' had vanished.
Was it voluntarily canceled? Or was there a time limit? Perhaps this was one of the restrictions of that ability?
***
At this moment, time seemed to freeze, locking everything in place.
"BOOM!!"
Four distinct bursts of Aura, each a different color, erupted violently behind Akira!
Under Jed horrified gaze, four Nen beasts of varying forms suddenly materialized behind Akira.
Though each Nen beast had a different appearance, they all exuded an overwhelmingly terrifying presence!
One was a massive, steel-armored beast with a deep emerald-green body.
Mysterious piles of yellow sand swirled around it, forming miniature sandstorms that clung to its form like a desert sovereign.
Another had three heads, its entire body shrouded in an aura darker than even his own 'On'.
The endless malice radiating from it seemed intent on annihilating everything—far more like a creature clawing its way out of hell than he ever was.
Yet another bore the appearance of a dragon, its face oddly cute, yet its body brimming with the pride of a draconic being.
And the last one—the one that terrified him the most!
A mass of violet-black mist, more sinister than even his own 'On'.
It felt the most dangerous to him!
Like facing a natural predator!
At first, its size was modest but then it underwent a drastic transformation.
Its body expanded as if inflated—growing, swelling, stretching endlessly!
In an instant, it became even larger, its aura deepening into something unfathomable.
Mega Evolution—Mega Gengar!
Mega Gengar suddenly opened its gaping maw and inhaled sharply, generating a powerful gust of wind.
The intense wind pressure whipped up violent gales, disturbing the barely settled environment once more.
The two long whips Jed had lashed out trembled uncontrollably in the wind, helplessly drawn toward Mega Gengar mouth.
Too stunned to react in time, Jed could only watch as his whips were devoured like snacks.
The beings that had appeared were none other than Mega Gengar, Tyranitar, Dragonite, and Hydreigon!
"This—!" Jed expression darkened further as he snapped back to reality, his body trembling uncontrollably under the oppressive weight of these four auras.
'Impossible!'
'How could he possess Nen beasts this powerful?!'
'And so many of them!'
Jed mind raged in denial, his face twisting into an increasingly grotesque mask of fury.
Neither in life nor death had he ever witnessed such terrifying presences appearing simultaneously!
If he had been a volcano on the verge of eruption earlier, now he was nothing but a dormant one.
His fighting spirit had vanished the moment Akira summoned those Nen beasts—as if his very spine had been ripped out.
"So? How's my strength? Not too shabby, right?"
"Starting to understand where the title 'Nen Beast Master' comes from?"
Akira spread his arms, the four world-shattering Nen beasts circling him like loyal guardians.
Gazing at the creatures whose auras dwarfed his own, Jed felt an overwhelming sense of helplessness.
His resolve for vengeance was unshakable. That much was undeniable.
But facing Akira was nothing short of an Ant trying to stop a Truck.
For now, retreat was his only option.
Later, he could take his time plotting revenge—against the Hunter Association, even against the V5 nations.
Jed expression flickered between uncertainty before settling on a decision.
That was to get out of here first!
With Akira present, it was clear today plan wouldn't succeed.
Jed guess that Gaki and Shura had most likely been dealt with by this Akira as well.
"Netero! I'll let you live a little longer!"
"Akira, was it? I might not be able to defeat you, but if I want to leave, you can't stop me!"
After delivering his final threat, Jed concentrated an intense surge of 'On' into his legs.
He turned around, ready to flee—every second spent here posed immense danger!
Though it made him look pathetic, there was no better option.
The ability of Akira had far exceeded his expectations.
In his estimation, Akira strength shouldn't have even matched Netero in his prime.
With his own enhanced power from resurrection, dealing with him shouldn't have been an issue.
Yet reality was the exact opposite.
It was Akira who could effortlessly handle him!
'How could a young man of this caliber emerge in the world after his decades-long death??'
Jed cursed inwardly, but his feet never stopped moving.
With 'On' fueling them, each step produced a powerful effect. Just standing there, the ground beneath him cracked incessantly, as if unable to bear the weight.
But just as Jed prepared to make his escape, what happened next shattered his confidence completely.
"Huh?"
"Why... can't I move?"
Jed stared fixedly at his legs, willing them to take a step forward, yet they remained rooted, as if nailed to the ground.
Upon closer inspection, he noticed something peculiar.
A strange shadow stretched beneath him and tracing its origin... It led straight to the gaseous Nen beast beside Akira!
Jed breath hitched—he understood immediately.
"Trying to run? Unfortunately, you can't." Akira words rang in Jed ears, unbearably grating.
Jed wasn't wrong in his assumption.
Normally, even against multiple opponents of equal strength, he could escape if he fought desperately.
But he was facing Akira.
Akira could effortlessly list several methods to prevent his escape.
For instance, using Gardevoir and Ferrothorn.
Employing Trick Room to forcibly slow Jed down, making flight impossible.
This time, he opted for an ability infamous in Pokemon battles—Shadow Tag!
[Shadow Tag]: Steps on the opponent shadow, preventing escape or substitution.
Few Pokemon possess this skill, the most common being Wobbuffet.
But coincidentally, Mega Gengar ability is also Shadow Tag.
Thus, Jed escape plan was foiled before it could even begin.
"An ability that restricts movement?"
"When did it activate? In an instant?" Jed gritted his teeth, his voice dripping with fury and confusion.
Though he loathed to admit it, He was now a fish on the chopping block, utterly at their mercy!
He couldn't even run away!
"Hohohoho, what an impressive ability~" Chairman Netero, ever the amused spectator, chuckled heartily from the sidelines.
When the four Nen beasts of Akira were fully revealed, even while bound, he couldn't help but tremble. It was an instinctive reaction that living beings have when facing something far more powerful.
Some people take this reaction as motivation, actively rising to the challenge.
Others are constrained by this instinct, becoming timid and weakened, thinking only of escape.
Clearly, Chairman Netero belonged to the former.
Netero wasn't overly surprised by his old friend decision to leave. What truly astonished him was that Jed couldn't even flee.
Akira Nen beasts had abilities that were bizarre and unpredictable.
'There's no escape now. I need to fight to death then?' Jed fists clenched instinctively, his teeth grinding audibly.
"I won't bully you. Pick one" Akira said, watching Jed complicated expression with feigned kindness.
"I'll use just one Nen beast. If you can defeat it, I'll let you go."
The area fell silent, so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Only the wind stirred by the aura of the Pokemon swirled around them.
"Hahahaha! I'm really getting weaker in my old age!" Jed suddenly burst into mad laughter, as if he'd lost his mind.
His laughter carried both relief and resolve.
"Ah... Jed" Netero sighed deeply, looking at his old friend.
He understood Jed meaning.
Barring any surprises, this meeting would be their final farewell.
After his wild laughter subsided, Jed slowly composed himself, his expression calm and unreadable.
"You're strong, kid. I admit that" Jed said. "Of all the people I've met, you're undoubtedly the strongest."
"The strongest I'd seen before was Netero in his youth."
"But now, you've surpassed him—far surpassed him!"
"However!" Jed tone suddenly shifted, his calm eyes turning sharp as his 'On' surged violently.
"I won't just surrender like this!!"
"For this final battle, I'll fight with everything i got!!"
"HYAKKIJUON RASETSU!!!" Jed threw his head back and roared, his voice—filled with determination and resolve—echoing through the sky, reaching the ears of Gon and the others who had just arrived.
With Jed final cry, a surge of 'On' thicker than ever before erupted into the skies!
Jed pupils were swallowed by the surrounding darkness, turning his eyes completely black.
His once pale face was now covered in black patterns, glowing with an eerie cold light.
The sky filled with 'On' rapidly wove together, forming a colossal Rasetsu even larger than before.
This was Jed ultimate technique, fueled by all his remaining 'On' and his determination to die.
It was his final performance.
***
In a corner nearby
"Is that the enemy Akira facing?" Leorio swallowed hard, his face filled with shock and hesitation.
Just the aura that reached them was enough to make his hair stand on end, freezing him in place. He had no will to fight, let alone face it directly.
In the evening, he was shoved into the sewer by Gaki and only managed to climb out recently, still covered in bits of rotting fruits and vegetables.
Just then, Kurapika and the others regrouped after dealing with the Floor Masters who had been corrupted by 'On'.
"That's... Akira Nen beast!" Gon stared intently at the Nen beasts standing unshaken before Rasetsu, his gaze growing more determined.
He would become stronger too!
Gon had lived in nature since childhood, often interacting with wild beasts in the mountains.
As a result, his ability to sense auras was far sharper than that of an ordinary person. What he could perceive went much deeper than what Leorio could sense—15o times deeper, in fact!
Killua, shared the same heightened perception as Gon.
The current timeline fell between the Greed Island arc and the Chimera Ant arc and the two had only just met Kite.
Thus, at this moment, Killua had yet to discover the Nen needle embedded in his brain, causing him to react more intensely to danger.
Let alone the overwhelming auras emanating from Akira and Jed.
Affected by the Nen needle, Killua reaction was even more intense than Leorio.
Akira presence now added several more layers of immense pressure to the scene.
The oppressive force on the field had multiplied several times over!
In comparison, Kurapika remained the calmest among them, having already witnessed Akira terrifying strength during the Yorknew City arc.
It was no exaggeration to say that the Phantom Troupe had been driven back by him alone—half of the Spiders had fallen to his hands.
Had they not fled swiftly, even more might have perished.
Yet even Kurapika couldn't help but show a flicker of astonishment at the spectacle before him, which rivaled the grandest of blockbuster films.
"Hehehe… A Nen beast master and Rasetsu, huh?" Hisoka leaned his upper body slightly backward, striking an almost seductive pose at first glance.
The posture allowed him a clearer view of the Hyakkijuon Rasetsu in its entirety.
"If I were to step into the middle of that, I'd probably be torn to shreds by the shockwaves in seconds, wouldn't I?"
Pressing a playing card against his lips, Hisoka eyes remained fixed on the battlefield as he voiced his genuine awe.
The card in question was none other than the Joker he had drawn earlier!
His gaze lingered especially on the four Nen beasts surrounding Akira, his expression darkening with deep wariness.
Akira strength had far surpassed his expectations.
He had assumed Akira strongest Nen beast was the colossal steel monstrosity.
While the others were strong, none had reached a comparable level.
But today proved him wrong.
There were three more Nen beasts of the same caliber as that steel behemoth! And no one could say for certain if that was even the full extent of his arsenal.
"As I thought, my assumptions weren't mistaken."
"He is the most perfect fruit I could ever hope to encounter in this lifetime~"
"Pity I'll never get the chance to pluck him…"
Thanks to his self-proclaimed role as a "fruit farmer" and his peculiar tastes, Hisoka had honed an exceptionally keen eye.
He could accurately assess a person strength, potential and other attributes, assigning them a score.
As for himself, he knew exactly where he stood and the heights he might one day reach.
But the idea of plucking the fruit named "Akira" was nothing short of a pipe dream!
Akira title held no exaggeration—he was, without a doubt, the [Strongest in the World]! And not just by a narrow margin, but by an insurmountable gap!
Hisoka words caught Leorio attention, and after a brief moment of surprise, he wholeheartedly agreed.
"Yeah. Even someone like Hisoka can't get close, let alone the rest of us."
"Their battle… it's the pinnacle of what human combat can achieve, isn't it?"
