Chapter 203: Chapter 203: Such a Sacred Scene
The dagger's material was unknown. It looked metallic, yet bore the texture of bone.
The front half of the dagger had a single-edged blade with a straight, rounded spine. It was a little longer than a palm and adorned with strange patterns on both sides.
The rear half of the dagger was hollow, with an irregular cut-out design that resembled the veins of a plant in nature.
The girl was certain that the dagger hadn't been there a moment ago. It had appeared out of thin air, like a divine miracle. Especially now, floating right before her eyes—it was impossible to ignore.
She couldn't help but think of her origins. Her father had been an apothecary, but he was no ordinary one. Among the people he associated with were those who called themselves wizards. After completing a potion experiment on her, these individuals came looking for her one after another. Her father told her to flee, and not long after, she received news of his death.
Wizards, apothecaries, a floating dagger—these terms seemed to echo each other.
The girl lacked physical strength. Even though she could tell at a glance that this dagger was dangerous and eerie, she needed it.
As soon as she reached out and gripped it, a piercing, soul-wrenching scream echoed in her mind. It was a howl from the very depths of the soul, and she felt like her own soul was about to shatter.
It felt like hours passed—or maybe just a moment—before she recovered. A stream of information was left imprinted in her mind:
'Bone Fang' 'Poisoned Dagger' 'Soul of Bone' 'Whispers of Madness' 'Shifting Shadows'
These five magical skills formed the entirety of the dagger—its origin, its purpose, and its hunger.
"A 'toy' made by some wizard, huh?"
The girl knew that the moment she held this dagger, she had become the plaything of some unknown wizard. But she had no other path. The modern world no longer suited someone like her, hiding alone in the shadows. A miserable fate awaited her—either captivity and cruel experimentation, or a silent, unnoticed death.
"Then, to celebrate my rebirth, I should give myself a new name. From now on, I'll be Carly Klaus. But… I have to kill? And not just one, but seven?"
The reborn Carly Klaus hesitated. She had lived for centuries in a childlike body and had never killed anyone. Because of her delicate and youthful appearance, even when she was bullied and abused, she always relied on her intelligence to exact revenge.
She would manipulate relationships between people to retaliate. Those who had once tormented her never met a good end, but she had never dirtied her own hands.
Still, that was out of necessity. If she'd had the strength, she would've torn those bastards limb from limb. But she couldn't.
Maybe some would say she could use guns, traps, mechanisms, or poison. Fine—she had possessed all those before. But due to her personality, or out of consideration for escape routes, she had always relied on others to do the dirty work.
But now, Carly Klaus was different. The dagger in her hand would grant her a kind of strength she had never known.
Should she go kill some scumbags? The world was never short of such vermin.
Carly Klaus hid the dagger within her clothes—it was easy for her. After hundreds of years, she had picked up countless tricks and had even resorted to street magic to beg for a time.
The dagger was composed of five necromantic spells, and Carly Klaus could use them all. However, she had no magic of her own. Her only source of power was the Soul of Bone within the dagger.
Through its magic, Carly Klaus could just barely cast Whispers of Madness.
Whispers of Madness: A necromancer can infiltrate an enemy's mind, causing the target to lose control of their thoughts and attack any creature they encounter until driven mad.
Though Regulus Black had mastered this spell to perfection—using it both for support and powerful offense—Carly Klaus could only use it in its most basic form.
"Hey! Little girl, your new name is Carly, right? Let's go all out! Let's paint the town red with blood!"
The Soul of Bone inside the dagger seemed to go through some kind of confirmation process and began directly communicating with its new master through her mind.
Carly Klaus was startled. She instinctively touched the place where the dagger was hidden, confirming—it really was the one speaking to her.
"I'm Karlie Klaus. What's your name?"
Pretending to be a delicate young girl, Karlie Klaus carefully asked in her mind.
"I don't have a name. What would a dagger need a name for? But if you must call me something… call me 'Aler'!"
After saying that, the 'Soul of White Bone' let out a cackling laugh in Karlie Klaus's mind. If not for the trace of Regulus Black's spirit left behind, this 'Soul of White Bone' would be nothing more than a wailing ghost.
"Aler? What a strange name."
Karlie Klaus was quite taken aback by such a casual name. And the spirit inside this dagger seemed pretty clever, too."Don't be surprised. I can't keep communicating with you constantly. Every second we speak consumes my magical energy. When that's completely depleted, I'll cease to exist."
The 'Soul of White Bone' showed no intention of keeping secrets and revealed its weakness outright.
"In the future, whenever you need me, just say the word 'Aler' in your speech. That way, I'll know you're calling me."
So that's how it worked. Karlie Klaus quickly understood—she couldn't use the dagger's powers all the time. Most of the time, Aler inside the dagger remained dormant. Saying "Aler" aloud during conversation might sound odd to others, but it was a subtle way to activate the connection. After that, communication could continue mentally.
"I understand, Aler. Then let's head to the next location before thinking about anything else!"
With that, Karlie Klaus prepared to set out. Although she was running and hiding, that didn't mean she had nowhere to go. She was very familiar with many hiding spots she had used over the centuries.
"Don't go! You and I meeting here—this is fate, a destined encounter."
Aler's words clearly hinted at something more. After all, collecting the seven souls of sin was a task that had to be completed. It didn't matter who wielded the dagger; the journey would remain one of bloodshed, just as he had said at the beginning.
Let's dive headfirst into the carnage! Drown the world in blood!"Aler, then tell me—why are we here?"
Karlie Klaus was no longer in a hurry to flee. She wanted to learn more about Aler.
"See the church behind us? Something truly vile is happening inside. Those who usually wear a veil of sanctity are now committing unspeakable acts. Their once-pure souls have fallen into depravity. No other sinful soul compares to this kind of corruption."
Following Aler's words, Karlie Klaus turned her gaze toward the church behind her.
The church doors were shut. It wasn't during public hours, and the notice hanging on the door made that perfectly clear.
A closed area might be off-limits to ordinary people, but for those determined to enter, it was only a matter of time—and often not much of it.
Karlie Klaus quickly circled around the wall to the back of the church. A latch on the iron gate leading to the garden cemetery wasn't locked.
Perhaps a gardener had left it open. Karlie glanced around, and after confirming no one was nearby, she slipped inside.
The 'Soul of White Bone', Aler, had an extraordinary sensitivity to sinful souls. It was as if he were navigating a maze using a map. Guiding Karlie Klaus, he led her directly to where the evil soul was closest.
"We are all shepherds of God, bathed in His radiance, embraced by His love, and blessed with pleasures beyond this world."
A priest was praying before the stained-glass image of God high in the church. The colorful morning light streamed through the stained glass, illuminating the priest—creating a scene of divine holiness.
If only the priest weren't swaying his hips back and forth.
"There's a boy in front of him. Use 'Whisper of Delirium' on him. You only have one chance."
Aler urged Karlie Klaus on.
