Hogwarts: Legacy of the Necromancer

Chapter 179: Chapter 179: The Dementor's Kiss and the Continuation Ritual

Sirius Black had lost! Now his fate was uncertain.

"Harry! Don't go over there!"

Hermione tried to stop Harry Potter, but at that moment, Harry no longer cared about werewolves—he only had Sirius on his mind.

But when Harry actually faced the werewolf that had turned around to confront him, he regretted it! He could only stand there dumbly as the werewolf stepped closer and closer.

"Awoooo...! Awoooo...!"

Howls of other werewolves echoed from within the Forbidden Forest, causing Werewolf Lupin to hesitate—should he attack the child in front of him or go join his kin?

In the end, Werewolf Lupin chose to run into the Forbidden Forest.

Everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Snape and Hermione helped Ron back to Hogwarts, while Harry ran off in the direction Sirius had gone. Soon, he saw Sirius, severely injured, having reverted to human form and collapsed by the lakeside.

"Sirius! Sirius! Sirius!"

Harry shouted as he ran toward him, but calling out his real name like that—was he asking for trouble?Though Dementors cannot speak in the traditional sense, they can understand human language.

So, thoughts like, "Someone's calling the name of a wanted criminal," and "Let's check it out!" and "Whoa! It really is Sirius Black!" could be imagined.

Regulus Black stood to the side, filling in the dialogue in his head. Dementors being "cute"? Not a problem—after all, in the world of anime, anything could be turned cute. It's no joke.

The gentle breeze over the lake suddenly ceased. Ice began to form, and within a hundred-meter radius centered on Harry and Sirius, the scene transformed into winter. The lake froze over, and all plant life withered.

Harry looked up. Above their heads, at least a hundred Dementors were circling.

The moment Harry made eye contact with the Dementors, it triggered an attack.

The Dementors dove down in waves. As they passed by Sirius, an invisible essence was drawn out of him. According to the standard wizarding textbooks, they were extracting happy memories. To counter them, the Patronus Charm required using one's own joyful memories.

However, in Regulus Black's view, Dementors were extracting "vital energy." A person drained of vitality would be left lifeless and naturally unable to feel joy.

This was also why, when a person's vital energy was overdrawn, their soul would detach from the body. A body devoid of vitality is essentially dead, and thus, the soul naturally leaves it.

At first, the Dementors only attacked Sirius. But Harry, who had learned the Patronus Charm, couldn't stand by and watch his godfather suffer like that.

"Expecto Patronum!"

Forcing himself to focus, Harry cast the recently-learned spell—Expecto Patronum was the only magic that could repel Dementors.

The spell in Harry's hand created a protective barrier about two meters in diameter, keeping the Dementors at bay.

However, the spell's strength was far from its full potential. Even the Dementors knew that this charm couldn't truly harm them.

They began ramming into the barrier, steadily draining Harry's already limited magical energy.

As a spell created specifically against Dementors, they understood it better than any wizard. The same charm had different effects depending on the user. In Harry's case, it would last less than a minute and wouldn't destroy even a single Dementor. Their persistent ramming alone was enough to dissipate it.

As the sensation of magical exhaustion flooded him, Harry's Patronus Charm failed.

Now seen as an accomplice trying to prevent the capture of Sirius Black, Harry too was added to the Dementors' "menu."

Both Harry and Sirius screamed as the Dementors fed—the sensation was like having their bodies torn apart.

Just as Harry was about to lose consciousness, the Dementors' feeding stopped temporarily. Sirius, having been drained to the brink of death, began to emit a faint, drifting soul from his mouth.

The Dementors gathered around. The atmosphere became eerily solemn.

What was about to happen was none other than the legendary Dementor's Kiss.

Harry was filled with despair. In the end, he had failed to save Sirius. His godfather—whom he had only just reunited with—was about to be taken from him forever.

"Choose the strongest Dementor to consume the soul, then split into two new Dementors. Thus continues the ritual of their race's survival."

Regulus Black, hidden to the side, was completely unconcerned about Sirius's fate. He knew that, at the last moment, some mysterious figure would always appear to save the protagonist and their companions.

And right then, a figure appeared on the opposite bank of the lake. A silver stag drew Harry's gaze.

The next moment, the power of the Patronus Charm surged across the field, wave after wave of silver light blasting all the Dementors away.

A tattoo on Sirius's body began to heat up, and a surge of vitality was activated.

Just before Harry passed out, he clearly saw Sirius's drifting soul return to his body.

"Tonight's been nothing but trouble! Sirius, if you had just listened to me, we could've achieved the same outcome without all this chaos."

Regulus Black now stood beside Sirius. Having been drained nearly to death by the Dementors, Sirius's very essence had been damaged—even if the danger had passed.

"I thought I was really going to die..."

Sirius looked weakly at his younger brother. He felt a twinge of fear toward this 'perfectly-timed' sibling.

Regulus was always so calculating, always so precise. Every impulse and reaction of Sirius's had been predicted. If he followed Regulus's plans, things would work out smoothly. If not, the result might still be the same—but with a whole lot more pain and bloodshed along the way.

"Buckbeak!"

Regulus turned to the side and called over the hippogriff, who had been wandering and peeking from afar.

This big guy had escaped execution by the headsman Walden Macnair and had ended up here.

Even Buckbeak had witnessed the sky full of Dementors and had been hiding at a distance, watching.

Hearing the familiar voice, Buckbeak happily ran to the lakeside.

Sirius was extremely weak, though far better off than the unconscious Harry.

His body, covered in tattoos, had long been enchanted by Regulus. One tattoo, in particular, symbolizing life, had a spell cast on it. Without this spell to restore vitality, Sirius wouldn't have been able to wake up at all.

Regulus first placed Harry on Buckbeak's back, then helped Sirius up.

"From now on, Buckbeak is private property of the Black family. I think you should get used to that."

Regulus patted Buckbeak's head. The creature let out a series of satisfied hums.

"Let's go! Back to Hogwarts. Headmaster Dumbledore, the Minister of Magic, and the Aurors are all waiting for us."

Buckbeak neighed, leapt with all four legs, spread his wings, and soared into the sky.

Regulus Black wasn't worried about getting lost. A silver flame emerged from his body, then burst into sparks and vanished.

He reappeared on the eighth floor of Hogwarts and opened the door to the Headmaster's office, stepping inside.

"Regulus! You said there would be a result tonight. You know I can't keep allowing Sirius to roam free—especially as a fugitive."

Cornelius Fudge was sipping Dumbledore's iced tea, though it clearly had a small amount of Veritaserum added by the old bee himself. As a result, the usually tight-lipped minister lost his composure and blurted his thoughts the moment he saw Regulus.

Still, Dumbledore was disappointed—no secrets slipped from Fudge's mouth.

"Calm down, Minister Fudge. Everyone has returned safely. Of course, Professor Lupin couldn't come; he's off exploring the Forbidden Forest tonight. The evidence you want will be delivered shortly."

Regulus picked up the iced tea by Dumbledore's side, poured himself a glass, and sniffed it—yep, definitely Veritaserum.

"Rufus Scrimgeour, Head of the Auror Office—won't you join me for a drink?"

Regulus gestured to the four Aurors present, raising his glass in invitation to their leader.
