Chapter 178: Chapter 178: He Forgot to Take His Medicine Today
Watching Sirius Black's desolate figure, Harry Potter and Ron Weasley didn't know how to comfort him.
"Harry! You should go to him, I'm fine here. I can just sit," Ron said.
Without Hermione by his side, Ron's intelligence seemed to return, and he offered a reasonable suggestion.
Harry slowly walked over to Sirius and stood beside him, both of them gazing at Hogwarts, feeling the stillness and mystery of the night.
"It's beautiful, isn't it? I'll never forget what it felt like walking through those gates for the first time. If only I could enter again as a free man," Sirius said.
As he spoke, he suddenly realized something — his younger brother, Regulus Black, had been working all along to help clear his name.
"You did something very noble just now. But he doesn't deserve your plea for mercy."
The atmosphere was calm, and Sirius held back from cursing when mentioning Peter Pettigrew.
"I don't think my father would want to see his best friend become a murderer. Besides, if he dies, the truth dies with him. If he lives, you can be proven innocent."
Walking through the passageway, Harry had been thinking a lot. People often act on impulse, instinct, and emotion — not logic. But upon reflection, one can often find that those actions still align with their beliefs and can be rationalized.
In just that brief moment of standing still, Harry had already come up with three valid reasons for stopping the execution of Peter Pettigrew, all of which made perfect sense.
"Please, turn me back into Wormtail! Don't let the Dementors come for me, Ron! Haven't I been a good pet? You won't let them hand me over to the Dementors, will you? I'm your rat!"
At the exit of the secret passageway, Lupin had gone ahead to prevent Pettigrew from escaping. Behind him, Hermione stood watch with her wand drawn.
But hearing Pettigrew's pathetic pleas, Ron felt nothing but disgust.
As for the ridiculous scene behind them, Sirius and Harry merely turned to glance — it was fine. Everything was under control.
"Harry! I don't know if you've heard this before, but when you were born, James and Lily asked me to be your godfather."
"I know."
"I understand your choice to live with your aunt and uncle, but if you ever wanted a new home…"
"What? You want me to move in with you?"
"It's just a thought. If you don't want to, I'd understand."
Sirius was already daydreaming about living with Harry. After all, he was Harry's godfather — a title that couldn't be taken away, even by a sentence in Azkaban.
To Harry, Sirius's title as godfather had once been painful — back when Sirius was a fugitive, thought to have betrayed his parents and caused their deaths. But now that the truth had come to light, Sirius's role as godfather finally felt like comfort and protection.
It looked like the days of living with Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon were coming to an end. Harry's heart surged with excitement.
"Harry! Something's wrong! Tonight is a full moon!"
Hermione had just emerged from the secret passage when she realized a major oversight — Professor Lupin on a full moon night.
"What's wrong, Hermione?"
Harry looked puzzled. What about the full moon? Wasn't tonight's moonlight even more beautiful and bright?
"James! My old friend, did you bring your potion tonight?"
Sirius suddenly sprinted to Professor Lupin and tried to stop him from turning toward the moon now shining through the clouds.
But a werewolf's nature contains an uncontrollable urge. Lupin knew he shouldn't look at the moon, and he should've just hidden in the passage — but the full moon's presence empowered his transformation. It was almost impossible to resist.
There is, however, a potion — Wolfsbane — which allows a transformed werewolf to retain his mind.
Despite Sirius holding him tightly, trying to block his view of the moon, Lupin still began to transform into a werewolf.
"What's happening to Professor Lupin?" Harry ran over to Hermione and asked. He already knew that Sirius, his godfather, was an Animagus who could transform into a large black dog — and that Ron's pet of twelve years was also an Animagus who could become a rat. So… was Professor Lupin also an Animagus?
But this didn't look right at all.
"Professor Lupin is a werewolf. That's why, every month, there are a few days when Professor Snape has to take over his classes," Hermione explained.
She hadn't wanted to reveal someone else's private matter, but as a Ravenclaw, Hermione had learned a lot about tact and discretion — the Ravenclaw way.
"You're a smart witch… but now, you need to run."
Sirius could no longer hold Lupin back. A werewolf's transformation couldn't be suppressed.
The tattered suit had already torn open at the back, and the shoes on his feet were now useless, as his entire foot had transformed into that of a wolf.
A wolf's howl echoed! Lupin's eyes turned completely black, and his entire face began morphing into that of a werewolf.
Peter Pettigrew immediately picked up the wand Lupin had dropped and pointed it at his own head.
"Expelliarmus!"
Harry Potter instantly cast a spell to knock the wand from Pettigrew's hand—he wasn't about to let him pull any tricks at such a critical moment.
However, Pettigrew had already achieved his goal—he had reverted to his Animagus form. A rat scurried out from the pile of fallen clothes and disappeared toward the Forbidden Forest in the blink of an eye.
Harry tried to give chase, but Hermione held him back.
The next moment, Lupin, now fully transformed into a werewolf, flung Sirius—who had been holding onto him—aside with a single swipe.
"Grrr..."
It seemed the transformation had drained a lot of his energy. The werewolf Lupin lowered his head, grumbling softly.
Seeing this, Hermione wasn't sure whether Professor Lupin had taken his Wolfsbane Potion earlier.
"Professor Lupin! Professor Lupin! Lu—"
"Awooo—!"
Hermione called his name gently, but in return came a savage howl from werewolf Lupin. The fierce gleam in his eyes made it clear—he hadn't taken his potion today!
"Didn't take his potion today… and now he's all wild and cute!"
Regulus Black, hidden nearby under an invisibility charm, was ready to step in and assist the three students at any moment. All that remained was for the final player to arrive.
Sure enough, a shadowy figure blocked the werewolf's view. Professor Snape burst from the passageway and spotted Harry Potter. His eyes locked solely on Harry. When he woke up in the Shrieking Shack, he had found himself alone.
Where had Harry gone? Had that scoundrel Sirius Black taken him? That brat had even dared to attack a professor!
So when Snape emerged, he paid no attention to the towering werewolf or the two other students—his eyes were fixed only on Harry.
"Harry Potter! So here you are!"
Snape grabbed Harry and hoisted him up.
"Awooo—!"
Being ignored did not sit well with werewolf Lupin, who let out a ferocious growl and leapt forward, swiping a clawed hand.
Snape wasn't afraid of a werewolf—but behind him were three students, and his wand had been stolen.
This whole situation was the fault of that blasted mutt! What now?
Snape dodged the claw swipe by stepping back—and in doing so, knocked over the three students behind him.
Just as the situation grew dire, Sirius finally recovered. He transformed into a large black dog and lunged at the werewolf.
The dog and wolf began a fierce primal battle. Whenever the werewolf tried to focus on the four others, the black dog would seize the chance to pounce and bite, drawing its attention. After several such diversions, the werewolf was fully focused on dealing with the dog.
Despite how brutal it looked, the fight revealed a stark contrast between the two.
Sirius's black dog form was an Animagus transformation. As long as he returned to human form, all his injuries would heal—though at the cost of magical energy.
Lupin's werewolf form, however, carried true werewolf traits—any wounds healed within mere breaths. Once he returned to human form, all he lost was physical strength.
The outcome became apparent through the comparison: the black dog's injuries kept accumulating, while the werewolf had none left at all.
Finally, their chase ended farther away. The werewolf caught the black dog, then slammed it brutally against a boulder.
"Awooo—!"
The werewolf howled madly at the moon—it had won the battle.
