Chapter 29: c29
Meetings Some of Pleasure...Others of Business
-West. Asgard. Winterfell-
-Game room-
If Ashara could say that there was something she loved more than anything in the world, it was seeing her cute six-year-old children running around the playroom with other children. The children of servants, merchants and more. Everyone there to play in the game room that Hariric had made. She surprised many when her master took part of his time and used it to create the place in question.
She could only remember when they asked her what she did. He looked at them. The intense look and everything. And then she just said that she wanted to make a place for her children and other people to have fun. Needless to say, everyone agreed that Lord Stark was strange. But no one denied that he had more heart in him than most gentlemen.
It was before the impressed gaze of the children that the games room was built. The game room had swings and more places where the children could run and play. All the children who could came. And it was so good that more had been built throughout the city. People agreed that children had to have some entertainment.
Now he saw how his two cute children were playing with Rhaenys and Jahaerys. The four of them were enjoying themselves. The young Jaherys was a mix between his father and his mother which was certainly interesting although Hariric always made it clear that when he saw the gray eyes they were all his sister's.
Lyanna had been more than willing to raise the little boy but between him being young and the fact that it would take at least three years to build what was the city in what was the old Bolton territory, people would wonder about the boy and who his father was. They had to maintain the image that she was dead because her husband knew about Robert's fucking obsession with her.
That in itself was enough for Hariric to claim the child as a bastard from a one-night stand he and she had. Yeah. She wasn't afraid to say that she was in a fucking threesome. What was the problem with that shit? Not that she cared. They could call her all they wanted but as she made it clear, sex is sex and it had to be encouraged from time to time.
When the fortress of House Reyne was finished Lyanna had had to leave but they gave a two-way mirror and another to the young Jahaerys so they could keep in touch. The boy was happy to be recognized as a son of hariric. Although if you asked him instead of uncles he had fathers since all the male figures in his life treated him that way.
The young man in question was happy knowing that life was good for him and more importantly that he did not have to worry about doing anything other than being a child. Such an adorable three year old. And that's obviously not counting the fact that her husband wouldn't hesitate to beat the shit out of anyone who offended the young boy.
She could remember a certain stupid lord who referred to Jahaerys as the stain on House Stark. She said it with such mockery and everything. That was when everyone saw that man beaten within an inch of his life by a hariric who also made it clear that unless said family apologized to an innocent child they would have no place in any further affairs of the kingdom of Asgard.
Her husband could be the most emotional person in the world. But she wouldn't change it for the world. It was almost incredible to believe but for Harry Stark, family was worth more than his gold and any wealth that people gained. It didn't matter what anyone said and it didn't matter what people could offer him. Insulting his family was a guarantee of killing someone.
And she knew that her husband could be even much worse. People did not realize it and were ignorant of it but her good husband would not hesitate to have people killed, their lineages destroyed and gone down in history as traitors if he thought that they had somehow harmed his family. anyway. It was a great trait to have.
She was brought out of her thoughts when she saw the different parents coming to pick up their children. She smiled amusedly as she watched Elia come. She left her little girl whenever she could to take care of the place to focus on her studies. Apparently there was nothing she wanted more than to learn and it was one of the reasons she despised the maesters.
It was quickly that he saw little Rhaenys who was no longer so little. Her olive-brown complexion, her violet eyes, and her brown hair streaked with platinum. Her children were not far from her. In fact she could see Cregan and Belladonna very close to her best friend. She had to hide a smile at seeing her fierce son so protective of Elia's little girl.
Of course she couldn't say she blamed him. Her son had a love for what he called protecting people smaller than him. Her husband said he had to be a damn potter trait that passed with him into this life. She scoffed. Her husband was the same, always putting the safety of the people close to him before his own safety. It was something you couldn't exactly fight.
Seeing Elia so happy was good. She knew how much Elia had despised living in King's Landingo. No. It wasn't because of the smell (although it helped) it was the suffocating atmosphere. In that city everyone fights for power. There were no friends, only allies. Elia didn't want that for her daughter. Admittedly, it was a snake but it had a giant weak point that everyone could have taken advantage of.
However she knew better. She knew that no matter how good things seemed, they were far from being so. He didn't like her but she would be the first person to admit that things for Elia were very difficult. That is to say, she went from being the princess of a kingdom to becoming a queen to being a person wanted to be executed.
Her husband had made no secret of Robert's intentions. The man was a true usurper. The maesters had tried to turn the story against them but that was quickly corrected when Hariric made it known that his intention was never to overthrow the Targaryens but rather to recover his sister and that if the prince and king had handed her over there would never have been a war.
But her husband was not one to leave things open to possibilities. He was a paranoid man hardened by the fact that he knew that people were capable of anything. So he made it known that if she had left Elia Martell and they didn't try to kill her, he would have perfectly let her be her queen because she didn't do anything to him. It was Rhaegar.
It did not help when he began to use the military smear campaign against Robert, making it known that he had the intention from the beginning to take over the throne and take advantage of what was the kidnapping of Lyanna Stark. When people said, wouldn't that suit Hariric? He answered no. After all he didn't want his sister to marry Robert.
Many were surprised. Most nobles would give their dominant hand just to make sure their family married the future person who would be king. Why was there one who wouldn't? When the men and women made it known, word spread quickly about the reasons why Hariric Stark did not want to see that oaf anywhere near his sister, among all those things, being little more than a king of whores.
She had to admit that she found the pace at which rumors spread funny. She didn't help because the first thing Robert Baratheon did was demand that the dragonspawn be brought to him. Children who were just little. He got worse because more and more people started calling him a usurper. She agreed. The guy was little more than a fucking thief.
However, she smiled when she saw her friend so happy. Seeing her smile and seeing her daughter was pretty good. It turns out that the child that was Aegon was never his. The maesters said that it would be dangerous for her to mother her and Rhaella gave her a baby that seemed to be of all things a Targaryen who was actually Aerys's bastard. It was a good plan because she took the heat off Elia's back which was something.
''You shouldn't look at me with that sad look. I have everything that is needed. I'm alive. I have my daughter. And I'm learning things that in the citadel they don't know even remotely.'' Elia had dedicated time to learning. As hariric liked to say, every subject that existed could be learned. Needless to say, she truly enjoyed having the opportunity to flourish as a person.
''I'm sorry if a friend just thinks that things are far from being pretty and right for you. I know better than anyone how difficult it is to get used to new things. Despite all of my husband's attempts, it was difficult to go from wearing dresses to being a little warmer." Not that I blamed him. The clothes he wore were comfortable. In her husband's own words, she wears what makes you comfortable.
''It's good enough I guess. And not. No, I don't regret being here in the least, Ashara. It's true that I won't be queen anymore, but that was more of Doran's and my mother's ambition than mine. "I just wanted to have a family." Elia was a snake. Cunning and intelligent. But she would never put her family in danger and being in the royal family would have put her family in danger no matter what.
''I guess you're lucky then. You will always be welcome in Asgard. And besides, my husband has always wanted to punch that fucking idiot's ass. He just wishes more than anything that he could screw it up really well and hiding here isn't so bad.'' She smiled as she saw Cregan near Rhaenys. The Dornish girl said something that earned a reaction from her son chasing after her. It was moments like this that were worth pissing off the world.
''You're very lucky Ash. You had a hell of a lot of luck with the man you ended up marrying. I know that most men wouldn't have thought so much about leaving me lying there to die just because my husband was the idiot on duty who decided to screw him in some way.'' It was bad luck and that's what it was. There was no better way to say it. Truth be told, she had already been presumed dead when she thought he would have them within reach.
''perhaps with most troglodytes of this era. Men put too much into pride and all that shit. But not my Harry. She didn't go after Rhaegar because his family's honor was being spit on. "She went after him because she kidnapped his sister, almost killed one of his friends and planned a movement against him with his own bannermen." She knew it. If only his sister had been kidnapped she knew he would have acted much more differently. That was her husband.
''oh believe me my husband has things clear, pride? Clear. But he has a different definition than everyone else of what pride is. He won't see it the same way other people see or think pride is.' If a southern gentleman told her husband to risk his pride he would kill him. Most people's pride is not the same as their husband.
''that's good to know. Anyway, it saddens me that my daughter sees that man more as a father than her own father. There was never love between rhaegar and me but at the same time I always believed that that man would at least come to be loved by his children.' Although seeing how things had turned out, it was better for his daughter to distance herself from him.
''It's not entirely a surprise. Your daughter is smart and she has a good head on her shoulders. "I wouldn't be surprised in the least if she has already related what happened to her father with respect to the things that cause her to have to live here." Ashara looked sadly at the girl. What would have been her fate if Hariric had not met them that day?
''As long as my daughter is happy, I have everything I need. I'm happy that she had a chance at life. And she, well, she has a brother. She likes being Jahaerys's older sister. You would actually have to see it the way she looks at it." Yeah. She laughed very amused just to see how her beautiful daughter was around her stepbrother. Let them take pity on anyone who messed with him.
''You know the attitude everyone has against bastards is shit. I think it's phenomenal that a little girl has made things clear. And the less said about Cregan and belladonna the better. Those two could make things difficult.'' His two sons could be complete terrors if they wanted to. Is anyone going after his cousin? The chances wouldn't be good.
''Lyanna has a hard time. Being away from her son. Even though she already has a little one more going. Tykren sends us messages. He has taken it very well and says that a child of Lyanna's is his whether he is the father or not.' Yeah. Lyanna was having a hard time not being able to be with her first child even if it was the result of rape. Tykren proved to be a great man by not looking down on the boy.
''I believe it was your husband's actions that made Tykren see the boy that way. I mean most people see bastards in a bad light. In this case, the children are even worse. But tykren doesn't blame him, I think it's because of your husband's impressive presence as well as his upbringing.' Most nobles would not want to have anything to do with either a bastard or a child of rape like that. She spoke well of Tykren reyne.
''I guess you could say he thinks of it as his own life. Tykren could have died. His mother could have become the personal toy of the Lannister soldiers. And his father also died. So I think he thinks that hating a child for something out of control would make him like those people he despises." Yeah. Things were simple and straightforward.
''I guess then Lyanna can consider herself a lucky woman. The truth is that I hate Rhaegar for what she did that day. Kidnapping a girl. Violate her. And use it in such a way. That man was crazy and I'm glad he's not going to have any influence on my little girl." She feared for her daughter's life. What would have happened if that crazy prince had a plan for her in some way?
''Consider yourself lucky. And good luck that the entire Stark house is behind the little one. My husband loves it too. In his own words he is his sister's son and will deny any possibility of contact with that branch of the family.' Although her husband did not despise the Targaryens per se (Queen Rhaella was as much a victim as they were, for example) she was never going to forgive the crown prince's arrogance.
''Yeah. But I'm still worried. If Robert Baratheon finds out that my beautiful daughter and that young man are involved in all things in this city, he will not rest until he gets his hands on her. He won't hesitate because of it and what's worse is that he won't be afraid to take everything he has to get his way.'' Robert was a source of fear for Elia. There were nights when she believed that this man put his hands on his beautiful daughter.
''Elia calm down. You are safe. The chances of that idiotic, good-for-nothing slob even getting his hands on you are pretty low. We're going to say insignificant at best. My husband will kill and destroy him anyway if given the opportunity.'' Yeah. She knew her husband well enough to know that her husband would not rest if that man dared to threaten her family.
''it's hard. I don't know how to do it. Did you know that they sent them to the mountain to take me and kill my children? Tywin planned to kill me to give my broken body to Doran to make known the situation. "Gods know what that beast would have done to me." Tywin was the most spiteful and vengeful man in the kingdoms and frankly the idea of that man putting his hands on him scared him.
''I guess that's enough to be scary. Whether we like it or not, the mountain should not have lived. "That guy breaks the laws however he wants and Tywin uses him as that tool to hit and do damage." He was dying to have the mountain within reach. The man was a known rapist and much more. The idea of seeing him dead was attractive to her.
''Yeah. But the worst thing is that I always think: What could they have done to my daughter? And you know what is the worst of all? I can't stop thinking that if anything happened to us, no one would say anything. "She is an innocent girl and everyone would have looked in another direction." Looking at her precious daughter who continued to dodge Cregan Elia she couldn't help but shudder at how lucky they had been to dodge such a thing.
''Yeah. That's one of the reasons my husband doesn't like Robert and Jon Arryn. They would have done the same if everything was normal. Tywin takes the blame for killing an innocent girl while the two of them sit on it as if nothing had happened. Disgusting''. Ashara growled. When her husband told him about Jon Arryn's plans he had to restrain her so she wouldn't go and kill him.
''If I'm honest, I'm surprised that your husband hasn't planned anything against him. "I mean, anyone with half a brain knows that Jon Arryn will not rest until he can make the kingdom your husband forged fall at his feet." Jon Arryn was a bigoted man with an annoying ideology at best.
''Do you know how sad it all is? That my husband knows what that man wants to do. But he can't kill him now. He would become the main suspect and he doesn't want the kingdom of Asgard and the six kingdoms to go to war so soon. At least he doesn't think it's time yet." Ashara could still remember the annoyed look on her husband's face. They weren't ready is what she said.
''I think my brothers would complain about it stating that what is said is less true since your husband basically by himself completely reduced the kingdoms to a mere shadow and hit them in such a way in the balls that he will be remembered for a long time. ''. Yeah. She found it funny. Very funny to see the look of the lords of the other kingdoms being surpassed by the kingdom they despise so much.
''That was child's play. One day let me take you to my husband so he can explain to you what he thinks about the war. For him that was not a war. When you see him think in terms of war you will realize why his opinion is what it is. Yeah. Her husband was far from happy thinking about the war. She couldn't blame him knowing his way of thinking.
''Then that is good for the other kingdoms that it seems that your husband is unique because then that means in a few words that your husband has earned enormous respect from the other kingdoms at least as a commander. And of course it is fear. They won't want to piss him off for a while.'' Elia could only laugh imagining the face of every southern lord at the idea of waging Harry's war the way he wanted if what Ashara said was true.
Ashara smiled, amused just by the idea of her husband's plan. In her own words the only reason she did not believe they would win the war is because most military commanders were not as skilled in battle strategies which she considered a failure. That's why her husband was so damn happy with the officer academy, thinking that he would come in handy to the kingdom with more people with military cunning.
"Let's say that I have a lot of faith that when my husband gets people in shape and teaches them to be real soldiers, I'm sure that more than one kingdom will want to avoid problems with us." The war demonstrated that. She showed that Asgard had good soldiers. But if only she had better commanders she knew that her husband would be calmer about it.
''It's good to know. I just think that the idea of war is one that I don't want children to suffer. It's bad enough that things are bad for the kingdom if they happen. Wars are not cheap and require funds. It has always been like this unfortunately." The idea of a war was not in Elia's plans and he would frankly prefer in a thousand ways to see his family happy with things as they were.
''It does not matter. However, Elia, there is a small topic that I would very much like to touch on regarding you. This is a matter that makes me very curious and I would like an honest answer from you.'' Ashara had a very serious face as she thought about what she was about to say to her best friend. Elia just looked at her as if she didn't understand what exactly was going on in her head.
''If I can help you I think I should. After all you have welcomed me. You have offered me the opportunity to be an educated person and study topics that the maesters of the citadel would only kill to learn. "I think I can honestly say that I'm very intrigued by whatever you have in mind." Elia looked at her friend as if she wanted to know exactly what she had in mind.
''Oh this is a very serious thing. You see, I noticed that a certain woman has been looking very carefully at a man in question. That woman is very close to me and she asked me Elia, 'When are you thinking about asking my husband to take you to bed?' Ashara really enjoyed the look her friend was giving her. Not that she cared too much.
-hariric's personal office-
Hariric sighed. Honestly, if anyone thought that running a kingdom was an easy task, they were going to be kicked so deep in the ass that they would make sure everyone knew how wrong they were with the idea. Damn, just from the amount of work in the form of reports he could tell it was shit.
To begin with, there were the reports that he considered a priority, which were the productivity reports. If the country was not productive it was bad and you had to make sure it worked. It was for this very reason that Hariric was happy to be able to say that his country worked like a charm like a well-oiled machine.
He now had a massive source of income. For starters there was the fact that with Dareon and Tykren taking possession of the territories of Honrwood and Bolton he now had new mines. The Hornwood mines were gold and iron. Meanwhile Bolton's were silver and gold. Which was good because they ensured a good amount of income.
As usual, since they were his allies, he had sought to provide both of them with two businesses that could be useful and that would make them not dependent on mining. Although thanks to their earthly runes they would not be running out of resources, the truth is that thinking only of it as a source of income was very foolish.
After a lot of work once again to make things work and the magic to stay, he had managed to make cotton work in what was Dareon's territory. He had had to re-strengthen a plant so that it was able, in short, to withstand temperatures so bad for it, but he was sure that it worked.
For his friend married to his sister, he decided to give him possibly one of the most fruitful businesses if he took off. Or at least that's what he thought. For the production of certain elements, land was needed and he was there. It turns out that the new Reynes, in addition to his mines, would be the main producers of cosmetics and cologne in the world.
Harry had to force himself not to laugh. The items he had given to each of them would be important. Although there were things like scented candles, they didn't have anything else. And they were even behind in the cosmetics sense. With this he would put his sister's family on top he had no doubt about it.
While he thought about how his family would fare another set of reports presented themselves to him. These were necessary reports because they had the North's military information. Officers and non-commissioned officers were coming out of the academy and being tested which was good as it ensured that the North would have them. Being sent to Essos where everyone was killing each other every now and then ensured that his kingdom flowed.
Justo also received information that Myr was making a big bet to see him eliminated. They would certainly be hiring assassins but who would be brave enough? the sorrowful men? the men of the night? blood lovers? Or maybe it would be a faceless murderer? The possibilities were several and he decided to be the best prepared for any event.
The truth was that he had been seeking to destroy Myr. The reasons were that although they were a source of income, the idea of tolerating a threat against her kingdom was a big no. And if they realized they couldn't kill him they could go after their lords seeking to cause incompetent members of the families to take possession.
From Harry's point of view, hitting his enemies with everything he had was something his grandfather had taught him. In the old man's words, if you fall on a person with the weight of a giant exploding cauldron, the odds will most certainly be on your side. It was something you should always take advantage of.
His mind however went to another matter: the cult. They had discovered more cultists but as he had suspected magic was part of it. Cultists appeared and disappeared as if nothing had happened. At one time she thought they were using the teleportation ability to move but she quickly took it away. It was also like this that he discovered about them or more specifically their truth.
They were simple shells. Men and women who were being used as temporary ships that basically served the purpose of having a skinchanger use them. He never thought that magic could be used in such a way but if he had to be honest it was a clever use of magic and more importantly dangerous.
Instead of ordering an attack, he had ordered that they look very carefully at any reason or cause that led said people to be possessed. He had no idea what it could be but something told him there was a triggering factor. Something that was making them allow this whoever it was to act which implied that they were dangerous or maybe they gained something from all of this.
Hariric decided to be smart about it and wait patiently until the time came to get what he wanted. He didn't want to draw attention to himself. It was obvious that whoever had this magic was trained. Highly trained in the arts of possession. What prevented him from leaving one body to another? He had to move carefully.
Skinchanger magic fell under the magical possession characteristic. What did that mean? That they were lucky that so far whoever was doing this wasn't able to do change magic. For the moment they were safe at least. But I couldn't let it be anymore so the best thing was to build a method to prevent that from happening anymore.
With all the people knowing that he had magic and knowing that the new climate and the situation of the soil was thanks to him, he knew that it was just a matter of moving people so that they understood that there could be dangers in magic. Until now the cult had shown that magic made him special. How long until they turned against him?
At the moment he would be handing out talismans to everyone who was close to him to have a way to protect himself from the magic of what possession was. Maybe there was more magic. For example, he had heard about Ashai's shadow manipulators, so he preferred not to trust them for the moment.
Thinking about the shadow dwellers reminded him of a letter. It was from a man who claimed to be a shadow user belonging to Asshai that surprised him. He knew that Asshai was a rich city but he had believed that because of his disdain for the faith of the red god they would be against him.
That led him to think about the news. Since he defeated Rhaegar there had been a considerable decrease in the magical potential of the different magic users related to shadow. Which was understandable. The red god was a being of fire and shadow so naturally having received a good hit meant that he would be weaker.
That's why he was seriously worried about what this shadow wielder could essentially want. However he was a sorcerer raised by blacks. What they made very clear to him is that there was no magic that was forbidden as long as you were able to control it and prevent it from breaking you. So it was logical that he didn't hate them.
Demons was a practitioner of blood magic that he used to protect and enchant. For example Ice was enchanted so that no one besides her family members could use it. And the Winter Throne was enchanted so that only his blood could use it and to set off a chain reaction should a family member try to usurp the position.
So yes. He was very knowledgeable in many fields of magic and he did not believe that there was anyone who could compare to his level of knowledge in this world. He had heard that this city allowed the passage of many people who practiced magic, so it was logical that they wanted to know about him, although that did not mean that he was not alert.
However, he stopped thinking about it and turned around. Without anyone seeing him he made his way to a personal chamber that had several mirrors in it. After arriving he made just one movement and one by one the mirrors shone. Moments later only four people showed up. He didn't care that the last one didn't connect but the four that were there were well worth it.
In the first mirror Tykren appeared. Dareon appeared in Another. Ned appeared in Another. And finally Benjen. It was logical. This was used to keep in touch with family and those he felt close to him. If he had given these mirrors to what was every noble family member he would have lost his advantage for the moment.
''brother, what's happening? It's rare that you try to contact us when we're out of hours. Has any event happened that you feel is vital for us to know about?'' Ned looked at his brother. Since the war he had been busy. His marriage was a priority and he managed to get married two years ago. But he also knew that his brother only spoke this way when it was important.
''You could say yes, little brother. To the rest of you, hello. How have things been since the last time I saw you? "I know I'm completely off schedule but I'd like to get an idea from you before I blurt out some things." Hariric could tell that his companions were each in varying degrees of discomfort.
''For my part, things are going well. The three connected fortresses in the mountains work perfectly well and so does cotton production. Plus Cerenna is happy with the way things are. 'She in her own words she believes that I am a better match than even a king.' Dareon laughed. It had been a year since he had managed to marry her. In addition to being attractive, it was because they were compatible.
''Yeah. Things seem to be going pretty well here too. Fuck the lonely hills, they have allowed us to build an entire city on one of them and it has looked phenomenal with the structures you told us about. Lyanna herself is very much in love. Still sad but getting better every day. Tykren smiled at his friend. The man was happy with the way things were.
''Brother, I don't think you ever told me that being a man would be so much work. Especially since I am the guardian and protector of the western lands of the north and its guardian of the port. I never thought I would long to be a child.'' Benjen wanted to cry. Since he took position he had had a lot of work. At least people respected him for seeing him work as his brother told him to.
''For my part, brother, things are going well. I have to notify you that Sarelle is pregnant with my son or daughter, we still have to find out. She is very excited. And when I told her that there was a possibility that she could use magic she got even more excited.' Ned had fallen in love with a woman who was a merchant whose things were going badly. They were bad for him because of his brother's waste until his death. He married her after two years of coming and going.
''You don't know how glad I am that things are going well for each of you. And Benjen, if you think that you have a lot of work now, just think that once you get married you will have to balance your life with being a good husband, then being a great father and finally making sure that things go well.'' Everyone in the mirrors laughed heartily at the amount of insults that came from the youngest of them.
''brother, you wouldn't send us this message without a reason. Please stop moving on to other things and tell us what has you so worried that it makes you call us so we can help you.'' Something Ned liked about his brother is his desire to help everyone he loves. At least he wasn't stupid enough to think he had to do it all himself.
''ah, I guess it would be nice if I said more or less what's happening. As you know I discovered that recently we had a cult of people who talk about how great I am and how I was chosen by the gods for the power I have, right?'' Harry could see the annoyed looks. No one wanted that shit on top of them. Religious cults? As if being noble wasn't enough.
''Yeah. We found out. They have appeared from time to time in growing areas from time to time. They appear. They speak very well of you. How you are an envoy from the gods themselves and then they leave as if nothing had happened. "People have gotten nervous." Dareon was not what could be said to be a happy person for that specific information. He actually considered that to be a big piece of shit.
''Yeah. It sucks because I doubt whoever is saying that is saying it for my own good. Possibly try to bring me down in some way or move the masses with a mentality of stupidity.'' Harry didn't have to be convinced of what he was. In his mind things weren't looking good and that was all he needed to know about it.
''If someone is spouting all that shit out of their mouth it's obvious that it's done to make you look on top. No offense brother but whoever is saying that shit doesn't have the best of intentions for you.'' Benjen was not stupid and in fact he knew how to see manipulation thanks to his education. What was the point of telling people that one is supported by the gods so as not to be recognized?
''It's the same conclusion I came to. Whoever moved them did it more than anything to be able to make me seen as a symbol. Like something valuable. And I don't think it's with good intentions." From his past experiences, one unpleasant thing was to make symbols fall. It was something very easy. Just make them look perfect and point out their flaws at a later time.
''Whoever is doing this obviously wants you to fall big and monstrous. He hopes to be able to take you down by making you look unbeatable in his eyes. If he had to say it, I think he hopes to stir up the people to make demands and demands that could be irrational.'' The best and possibly the only way to take down his friend was to turn the town against him, Dareon thought.
''That's another thing I was thinking. The best way to hit me is not with armies or assassins. It sounds like a waste of time. If anything, I think they would use people who are not capable of defending themselves and who would trust me.'' If he were like any other ruler he would possibly have fallen into the trap. Oppresses the people. But after learning about the French Revolution he did not agree.
''If that can be the objective of whoever is targeting you. Because let's be honest, friend, you are almost untouchable. "I'd like to see the killer with the pair of balls big enough to even think he can put his fucking hand on you." Tykren laughed in amusement just imagining an assassin even thinking about that stupidest action.
''Sometimes the strongest sword is unable to cut as deep as words can reach. I hope that people don't grow up thinking that they can just expect me to do the impossible with magic because I certainly don't see myself as capable of solving every problem.'' She hoped the idiot mentality wouldn't spread too quickly before she nipped it in the bud.
''However, that leaves us brother with a question: How exactly is this happening? How is it possible that these people appear and disappear as if nothing had happened? Could it be that they are using magic to be capable of such a thing?'' Ned was glad that his brother used magic. But the idea of having a magical enemy didn't please him.
''Yeah. Magic is part of the equation but not in the way you might imagine. In fact it is a simpler matter. I had several of the war wolves study the situation and they found that the people who were speakers were willingly possessed by a third party. Skinchanger''. Harry could see the look of disbelief in each of their eyes.
''Wait a fucking minute, you mean to tell me that the same magic that allows people to communicate with an animal or in some cases take over an animal can also be used to take over a human body? "That's very fucked up." Benjen couldn't conceive it in his mind. The perfect assassin. You didn't even have to enter the place just get into a servant. They wouldn't see you coming.
''Whoever is behind this is not a normal magic practitioner. He is a really powerful one and he is using a magical anchor to be able to empower the magic of him and thus be able to do all this.' He had come to that conclusion after much study. The problem is that he had to find the place where the man was taking the energy from.
''Just out of curiosity Harry, can this person possess people against their will? Because if so, could he convince lords against us and try to form an alliance to see us expelled?'' Dareon conveyed one of the legitimate concerns that they would have to fear in this matter since it was not something normal.
''No. Skinchanger magic is magic that involves being able to connect with an animal to see through them and act through them. It is something that has to happen voluntarily. All speakers are volunteers. So they are traitors but at the moment it hasn't reached anyone else.'' If I had to bet I would say that all the speakers were just looking for an excuse to see him downstairs and that's it.
''that's good. You know for a moment I was afraid that the guy might try to sneak into the mind of someone close to us and do gods only know what things. Just to be clear, do you have any way to prevent that from happening? I don't want to see my wife committing suicide just to hurt you in some way or to get to you.'' While it is true that they could hold out in the end, the mind has a limit to its level of resistance.
''I have been working on a runic anchor formula creating an amulet that would protect us all from their attempts to reach us. Although if he hasn't gone after us yet, I deduce that there is something that prevents him from doing so.'' There had to be a reason. A reason why at the moment this whoever it is hasn't done shit to get to them at the moment.
''What if it's like you told us that it needs a type of power for it? Maybe you are planning to do it but for a complete receiver, right brother? Why settle for us when you have several children who can be your target?'' Since his brother confessed to him, magic opened his mind and Ned knew that his brother was capable of both great and insurmountable things.
''That's another thing I fear. The mind of a child or even a teenager is a simple mind compared to that of an adult. "He could try to possess the minds of any of the children simply because he thinks he will gain some power through them." He feared that whoever he was might be targeting one of the children.
''Good friend, for my part, I feel good that you have thought very carefully about it and have decided that the best thing you can do is work to protect our family, brother. It's better to move. How do you plan to track it?'' Benjen wanted nothing more than to get his hands on the bastard that he thought could do this shit.
''I will approach one of the speakers covertly and so to speak place a charm. The next time I try to use it it will allow me to track it and locate it so I can then find it and end this shit.'' Yeah. I didn't want to leave it to chance, luck or any shit. I would be giving him the same end in order to protect the children from him.
''maybe it's best to move with speed too. If this person is magical and powerful, how do we know that he cannot be reaching out even further and trying to reach all of us with his magic? "We don't know their program." Dareon had to say that the chances were not with them since they did not know too much information.
''I will move as quickly as possible to contain the threat as soon as possible. However I have to find out how it spreads. You need a medium to be able to reach people. "That's my main priority." Harry had no idea what the methods might be but he doubted that he would be able to do it just like that.
''What if you are using an intermediate point? I mean, you send your consciousness through something and from there it reaches the people you care about. If you stop to think about it, the best way to reach all of us is not direct but by taking several paths." Tykren only decided to offer his opinion while the others nodded.
''We would have to find out how exactly it is being able to spread. As if you were using a resource that everyone has access to. But what is there in the north that everyone has access to?'' Hariric didn't know how it was possible. There had to be something he was taking advantage of.
Everyone thought them. A whole minute. Before reality dawned on their heads. Each one of them turned paler than a ghost. For what reason? Because the only way they could have all things reaching them was through the Weirwoods. Ned looked especially bad about it. Hariric looked furious.
''they are using the weirwoods. Damn. Everyone goes at least once a day to pray to the weirwoods. Through them you may be able to reach anyone's mind. "That fucking bastard has access to the largest intelligence network in all of Asgard." Ned wasn't one to just swear, but damn if he was swearing at that moment. What kind of shit was this?
''The weirwoods are the way he manages to reach people. How do he use them? What methods do you use to achieve your objectives? That is the question that must be asked. "It can't just be left." Harry wanted to scream. He never thought that he would have that weak point of all things. Was that man or woman taking advantage of what was the faith of the citizens?
"Brother, just out of curiosity, how much would it cost you to make sure that he can't use the weirwoods as a way to spy on us and create servants to be able to get to us?" Benjen was certainly pale. You could know a lot about counterespionage tactics but it was of no use if the person in question could simply sneak through what they adored.
''it will take me a while. I don't know how much exactly but I deduce that at least a year. Maybe more. I have to find a way to be able to make it so that I can maintain the weirwoods without destroying them or anything like that.'' Hariric wanted to growl. This was very bad. I never considered that anyone could really be using the weirwoods. What a terrifying way to have the ability to spy.
''Friend, you better get to work on it then. "Not to offend or tell you how you should do things, but let's be frank, that should be a priority of the highest level right now." Dareon wasn't at all comfortable with the idea of of all things having a spy through something he couldn't even touch. It was absolute shit.
''I'll get on it. But my knowledge of herbology is rather little. Although I am capable of doing vital alchemy, this falls more into the field of plant magic and that is something I have no idea about.'' He would be blindfolded. Damn he was over the top in all of this. He didn't see it as easy at all.
''as long as we can be and breathe calmly. Damn now I'll have to increase the protections. Whoever it is can try to get to Lyanna and do God knows what. "The way things are, I wouldn't take them well at all." Tykren complained about the shitty situation he was in at the moment. It was a position that was difficult to defend.
''I will get to work creating the amulet first of all. And through this I will try to work to make it possible for us not to be spied on in any way through these people who join him willingly.'' Hariric gave his word and when he gave his word he always kept it. He could see each of the others nod in agreement.
Everyone agreed at that time that the way things were they had to make a real effort to make sure. Increasing the protections of what were their living places was essential. Benjen and Eddard would wait for a visit from his older brother so that he could create effective defenses to be able to protect themselves from any intrusion.
Hariric was thinking hard about this shit. This whoever he was was using magic intelligently. But if he really had access to the weirwoods, he had the power to reach anywhere. What prevented him from sending his consciousness somewhere else and that way, when he was a murderer, he would be reborn into another person? It wasn't the best news.
I would have to find a way to protect the weirwoods. To prevent them from being used in that way. Sigh. He had more work and still had to finish some paperwork so he immediately went to his office once again to finish the paperwork. After this he hoped to have peace.
The War had not apparently ended.
