Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Trapped In a Butterfly Sim (Ascension)
It was getting late, and Lincoln had been in his trance-like state for a while. To get a better understanding, Marco left to pickup Jill and Martha to see if they could bring him out. The two went inside the hut to inspect the boy, but neither understood how or why it was taking so long.
"Maybe it's different because we aren't on Earth?" Jill contemplated opening the boy's eyelid to check his pupil.
"It could be because the targets or dead, or figurines?" Martha picked one up. "But that wouldn't explain why time is passing for us.
Defeated, the duo exit the hut and address the party. "We have no idea of how to get him out." Jill Mayberry admitted. "The only feasible option is to wait for him to leave on his own."
"You're telling us we got to wait for him get out his coma!?" Furious, Blitz disagreed. "Isn't there some bullshit spell that can put one of us into the kid's brain!?"
"Well, yes." Queen Eclipsa revealed. "When Globgor was trapped in crystal, I used a spell to project my consciousness into his."
"Great, let's try that!" The tall imp went to get Lincoln but was stopped by Martha.
"That could work, but the dungeon Linky makes isn't in his mind. It's like a metaphysical accumulation of collective consciousness that's transformed into a supernatural realm that he and his designated guests can enter to fight 'Bosses', or the representations of people's twisted desires and actions, or 'sins' you could say, in an effort to release souls from their own corruption and face the ramifications of their actions." Martha explained, shocking everyone else in the room. "What, because I'm a sexy and have a rustic background, that automatically makes me an ignorant redneck? Just because I don't have a fancy degree doesn't mean I'm stupid."
"Back to the issue, is there really nothing we can do to help him?" Millie asked anyone.
"Afraid so." Jill shook her head. "Every time me and her went inside with the boy no time passed for the outside. But those were humans, if Lincoln really went to challenge a dungeon formed from the actions of entire lineage, I wouldn't even begin to fathom what could be happening."
Sullen, Millie lowered her head while Moxxie comforted her. "Lincoln would never enter if he didn't think he'd could find his way out. We all just need to have faith in our boy." Touched, his wife kissed his cheek. "Anyhow, what could happen?"
The Universe, wanting play a joke on the imp, brought three portals of swirling red flames surrounding the hut. Running out the portals was an army of women who looked exactly alike; the same flame-inspired dress, long red hair that darkened at the tips, horns, and small flame hovering overhead. The women surrounded everyone with one half of a scissor in each hand, pointing towards them threateningly. Once all those women entered, another portal appeared that brought a man with a crystal head, a giant disembodied skull floating, and another one of the women beside them.
"On authority of the Bureaucracy of Magic, we, The Magical High Commission, take the one designated as 'Lincoln' into our custody to face trial for his crimes!" The giant skull declared.
"You just had to open your mouth." Blitz turned to face Moxxie. "Way to go, Mox!"
It was strange how time worked in dungeons. From the outside, only a few hours or so may have passed; but for Lincoln, time might as well have been an imaginary concept he was told about as a little boy but stopped believing in as he grew older. As frightening what happened in the 'Early Years' stories were, those days felt like a vacation compared to the 'Age of Ascension'. The first part of this dungeon only covered two generations of queens during the Mewnipendence and founding of the Butterfly Kingdom. The 'Age of Ascension' was the second era, marking a period of time that established crucial moments in the kingdom.
The Ascension Era consisted of stories of seven queens. Unfortunately for Lincoln, while freeing a soul in the first era could be done in a matter of months, he had to be in each story of the second era for a minimum of three years. Lincoln needed to be more than a background character in these stories; he had been promoted to recurring cast. However, that was not where the protagonist resided now.
It was perpetual sunrise on the road past the Age of Ascension. As a way of indicating the kingdom was developing, the former dirt road was a now a worn path wide enough for people to go up and down without running into each other. The people near this road changed as well. Now there were people traveling the road, left to their own devices.
On the road, a mule drawn cart is driven by a mewman farmer as she carries bails of hay. "Long wat to reach the end of the road, we'll have to stop and rest a ways up. That won't be a problem will it?"
Beside the farmer was the passenger she was talking to, a woman in a dark cloak that covered her face. "We'll have no issue." She looked back to see the other passenger. "Are alright back there?"
Lying down against a bail of hay, Lincoln has his cap cover his eyes. "Go ahead." He answered, drained.
Getting through the last boss room took a great effort to accomplish. While he didn't have to defeat a powerful foe to clear, the rush of living an entire life seven times wasn't a simple feat. The ordeal was over for now, but he was still a long way from finished. Tired, the boy reminiscences on his first two stories in the Ascension Era; Estelaria the First Star and Hemera the Builder, two people he had called his best friends of the era.
Estelaria was the first in a tradition that would be called 'Star Queen', a princess born under the light of a Morningstar whose tenure as queen would open a new era for the Butterfly Kingdom. Every Star Queen is followed by a Day Queen, a princess born when the sun is in the sky, then the remaining descendants would be Night Queens, those born at night time. Similar to how Estelaria brought a new era with her story, Lincoln was given a new background.
Same as in the Early Years, he was born Lincoln Radio; but instead of being placed under the guardianship of his Uncle Alastor, this time he was raised by his two servants, Moxxie and Millie. In this era, House Radio was founded by Harriet who fought alongside Urania and her generals; for her efforts, Harriet was given the position, 'Grand Mewnister', a title that recognized the head of the family as having authority second only to the Queen herself and acts as the only one allowed to challenge a Queen's word. In this new era, Lincoln was born the first child of Lord and Lady Radio; followed by his younger sister, Lucy Radio.
Lincoln had a happy childhood with his family until the age of seven, when his parents were killed by a bandit in an ambush on their way from visiting the Silvan Kingdom. Without other relatives to take them in, their parents' servants from the Underworld, a sub-level kingdom, took over as their guardians. Furthermore, Lincoln and Lucy were sent to live with the royal family. Despite the demons' hesitation, both of them proved to be caring and supportive guardians for the two children.
A feature of every story remained, Lincoln met a princess from the Ascension Era after his parents were killed. In the story of Estelaria, she and Lincoln were the same age and were raised similarly to a brother and sister for they had many similarities. Both of them were cheerful children with clever minds, and both were different from those around them because of their hair. Estelaria had violet hair dotted with bright spots that looked like stars; and Lincoln had pure white hair that some say looked like fresh snow swept in a blizzard.
He had memories of his life with Estelaria, but 'Lincoln' didn't enter the story until her fourteenth birthday when she received the royal magic wand. Lincoln Radio had woke up with a bad headache, but didn't allow it to stop him from being jovial for his best friend. At the party that night, he and his sister Lucy prepared for her a magical display that brought joy to the whole castle. The only other gift that came close to toping their gift came from Jett Stone: a telescope, one that gave birth to princess' life long passion for astronomy.
Lincoln and Estelaria always had a positive relationship, but something the princess was always jealous of was that he and Lucy could use magic without a wand. Once she inherited her family wand, the starry-haired girl was completely devoted to improving her skills. During that year, three magic users spent night after night studying the stars, with Estelaria able to predict future events because she felt the stars sent messages to her. A few days after her fifteenth birthday, Queen Solena organized a festival to celebrate her daughter, creating the tradition of the Princess Song when Estelaria performed a song she wrote.
A year later, she would announce her intent to marry Jett Stone. For a year the two kept a secret love affair from everyone, except the Radio siblings who discovered their sister figure acting strange. The two always found Jett to be a decent young man, but Jett did confess to Lincoln in private that he always felt jealous for his and the princess' close bond; this lead to the two of them having a rousing laugh. The joy was short lived as former queen Urania would pass a few days later, followed by King Rodric, Estelaria's father, three months later.
It would be the next year when Lincoln would finally release her soul, when he congratulated his old friend on her wedding day before the ceremony. When the story ended, the two were sad to part, but they thanked each other for being their after the lost of their loved ones. After she departed, Lincoln went to his next story, Hemera the Builder.
The next chapter had backstory for Lincoln similar to the previous. However, he and Hemera wasn't as close in their younger years because the princess was a girl of few words and Lincoln was voluble throughout that life. It was thanks to Lucy Radio that the boy and the princess became friends, the two shared a sisterly bond; their connection was so strong that people not familiar with the royal family assumed that the dark-haired girl was a middle sister between Hemera and her younger sister, Nixie. However, both Lincoln and Hemera shared the common interest of joining Queen Estelaria in court meetings.
Lincoln joined the story on the princess' fourteenth birthday, when she was given the wand and announced that Hemera and the white-haired boy would be sent to Elfendor, the dimension that functions as a magnificent university, also known as 'The Multidimensional Learning Capital'. It was considered a rare feat to attend Elfendor as it was majorly populated by elves, with the only way of being accepted was to be deemed worthy by an elf or be the descendant of a student that displayed remarkable aptitude during their time. Luckily, King Jett attended and performed exemplary; thought Lincoln wasn't a Butterfly, his witty and charismatic ways won over the university representative. Both he and the princess would leave for four years before returning to Mewni, Lincoln would take Moxxie with him while Millie stayed with his sister.
During their time at Elfendor, the two young scholars found their passions; Hemera in Architecture and Engineering, and Lincoln found his in Constitutional Law and Litigation. This time away from home brought the two closer as friends. Hemera grew into a more confident and outgoing young woman, while Lincoln became more observant and concise. When they weren't in class or studying, they would often read in the university library or practice their respective hobbies. The princess took belly-dancing classes twice a week, and the white-haired student took to learning artisanry skills such as woodworking, jewelry-making, and other handicrafts. Time flied and soon they graduated with honors before returning home.
The future Queen and Grand Mewnister returning was a wonderous occasion, but the most shocking part was how Hemera and Lincoln had changed. Four years ago, the princess was a viewed as a plain girl but now she was an eye-catching beauty with an exotic flair. Lincoln Radio, on the other hand, was always viewed as cute, precocious boy; but now he had grown into a strapping gentleman who carried himself with a modest attitude and a benignant character.
With their return came plans from the graduates to revitalize life in the small kingdom by rebuilding Butterfly Castle. However, their plans were turned down by the Queen until Hemera became queen, either by marriage or when she turns twenty-two. During the first two years after their return, Lincoln and the princess joined the Queen for her royal duties at events and councils. At the age of nineteen, Lincoln Radio was proclaimed Grand Mewnister and set his first act in power to set up subsidies for farms and tradespeople that he would fund out his own inheritance for the first three years. Truly, it was a peaceful time for the kingdom; then came the biggest hurdle for Hemera, matchmaking.
Two years after they graduated from Elfendor, the second princess, Nixie, became infatuated with squire Roman of House Fields. The shy sixteen-year-old went to her big sister and surrogate brother for advice on how to approach her crush. Wanting to be a good big sister, Hemera agreed; the oldest princess arranged for her and Nixie to have dinner with Lincoln, with the Grand Mewnister inviting Roman. It was no secret that Queen Estelaria, the king, and virtually the entire kingdom had hopes that Hemera and Lincoln would grow romantic interest in each other. Taking advantage on everyone's misguided thoughts on their relationship, the oldest nobles would stage a fake date and use the excuse of inviting Nixie and Roman as chaperones to set them up. Although the second princess and Lincoln thought the plan was working, their hopes were shattered when Nixie spotted her sister and Roman making out in the garden.
This was the event that allow Lincoln to end the story. The moment he saw the princesses arguing, the white-haired mewnister got between his friend and Nixie. After the second princess walked away, the story broke and Lincoln faced the real Hemera. She explained that moment created a pain her heart, and that betrayal drove an animosity in Nixie that resulted in the deaths of Hemera, Roman, Nixie, and her husband. Before she departed, the Builder thanked the boy for his friendship and wished him well in helping her family.
"We'll be at the roadhouse soon, Lincoln." The cloaked woman spoke.
"Thank you, I really need a rest." He responded.
"I TOLD YOU IMMUNINATI DICKHEADS YOU'LL NEVER GET HIM!" Blitz screamed at the Magical High Commission, shooting at the Hekapoo clones. "EVENTUALLY THE PROM QUEEN WE'LL RUN OUT OF BODIES!"
Although the Butterfly family didn't like the idea of fighting the Magical High Commission, none of Lincoln's friends would allow any harm to come to him.
While everyone else was fighting, the real Hekapoo snuck in the stone hut and found a more demonic looking Lincoln. She had questions, but wouldn't question her job; she threw the boy over her shoulder and called out to the rest of the council.
"I have him!" She called out, opening a portal. "Let's get him to the Bureaucracy!"
Completing their mission, the three council members left, but not before a Heka-clone confiscated both the royal family's and Marco's dimensional scissors. Tired and the room tattered, everyone vented their frustrations at losing the boy. Angry, Millie's eyes went bloodshot and she began snarling.
"Where did those fuckers take my boy!?" She yelled.
"I can answer." Glossaryck appeared from the spellbook again. "I'm afraid your surrogate child has been taken to the Bureaucracy of Magic to face trial for his crimes."
"What crimes?" Moxxie asked the cosmic being. "He's 11, what could he have done that warrants so much arresting?"
"Trust me, in the time it would take for me to list all his crimes he would already be crystalized."
"The fuck you say!?" Blitz yelled.
"Crystalize." Eclipsa told them. "If the council deems you evil, they encase you in crystal for all eternity."
More furious, Millie picked up a shotgun and cocked it. "Someone better get me to that damn bureau or I am gonna keep killing bastards until they come get me!"
While everyone else looked at a murderous demon, Moon was the first to respond. "I'm afraid it won't be so simple. They confiscated our dimensional scissors, without those we can't leave Mewni."
"Then we find someone else with scissors." Loona stated the obvious solution.
"Unfortunately, dimensional scissors are handmade by Hekapoo and bestowed on those she deems worthy. The only way to get a pair is to earn them , inherit them, or steal them." Marco informed everyone. "Even if someone we know has a pair, no doubt the Commission has either confiscated them or Hekapoo rendered them unusable."
"But..." This time, Star had an idea. "What if we do know someone with scissors, but the High Commission didn't think we would go to them for help."
"Who the hell would you know that fits that description?" Octavia asked, cracking her neck.
Star shared a look with Marco and her parents, the three of them realized who she was talking about.
Because of the permeant sunrise it was hard to tell how much time passed on the road, but from Lincoln's exhaustion he would put it at between six to nine hours. Thankfully, there was a small inn on the road called a road house about half a day's travel to the next room. So, the plan would be to rest up at the inn and then enter the next era afterwards.
The hooded travel companion hopped out the wagon. "I'll go arrange the rooms, you just wait back here for my return."
Cracking his joints, Lincoln sat up and nodded.
Staring at the sunrise down the road they just crossed, he recalled his favorite parts of the Age of Ascension, his time with Cosmica the Explorer, Polaria the Navigator, and Crescenta the Eager. This section of the story featured a shift where instead of Lucy being the only family Lincoln had left after his parents deaths, it would be the twins, Lana and Lola Radio. Additionally, House Radio resided in Radio Tower, a section of Butterfly Castle created during Hemera's construction. The tower featured a suite for the family, a family library, stables, etc., and at the top of the tower, a magical device one family ancestor acquired resided, the Transponder Mirror. In addition to being Grand Mewnister, the family head was also responsible for addressing the people through mirror transmissions for urgent matters.
Cosmica Butterfly was the Fifth Queen of Mewni, and the one in power during the kingdom's centennial. Just like the previous two stories, Lincoln met the princess after the deaths of his parents, but they didn't meet until a year after it happened. He met Cosmica at the library where he helped Lola with her reading lessons, she and her cousin, Pyxar Butterfly, spotted the brother and sister and invited them to a reading circle. For the next two years, Lincoln would meet the Butterflies everyday at the library; then, when they were all nine years old, Cosmica fell into one of the castle pools and nearly drowned if not for Pyxar and Lincoln rushing to her aid. To thank them, the princess gave dancing lessons to her cousin with the two left feet, and the future Grand Mewnister, privileges to read the Butterfly Spellbook.
Truthfully, Lincoln was happy having two good friends but it all changed two years later, at the age of 11, when he spotted Cosmica and Pyxar walking through the gardens hand-in-hand. It was that moment he realized times where changing, and he would soon be an 'odd one out' in their little group. Soon, he spent less and less time with them and turned to his guardians and sisters more, and would regularly take visits to the commoner area of the capital and speak with the people. For three years, Cosmica and Pyxar had a secret relationship, and Lincoln became a beloved figure to the common people of the kingdom.
A month before Cosmica turned fourteen, Queen Hemera summoned her daughter and the white-haired boy to a council meeting. The Queen praised the heir of House Radio, and reveal to the adolescents her intentions to have the two arranged to be wed after Cosmica takes the throne. They were stunned at this, but soon the black and white-haired teens burst out laughing; Cosmica explained to her mother that she and Lincoln value each other, but they don't see each other that way. Accepting of both her daughter's and the young man's wishes, Hemera dropped the matter. Talk of the princess' love life went silent until days before the wand ceremony, when Cosmica and Pyxar were caught being affectionate and brought before the Queen and her council. This lead to the couple being forced apart by their mothers; sympatric to their plight, Lincoln approached the Queen and asked for her rethink her punishment. Hemera considered Lincoln's request and gave a negotiation; she will allow the princess to see her cousin non-romantically, but Lincoln had to agree to marry Cosmica when it becomes time for her to take the throne. He didn't like the deal, but the white-haired young man agreed as it would allow him and his friends time to form a better plan.
On the princess' fourteenth birthday, Cosmica was presented with the royal wand, with it taking the form of a compass that pointed what she wanted most. The evening past without difficulty, but news of the arranged engagement became known across the kingdom. Although neither of them enjoyed the arrangement, it gave Cosmica and Pyxar the opportunity to see each other. Almost a year would pass until opportunity arrived in the form of Sir Glossaryck of Terms. Since she was a child, the keeper of the spellbook told stories of the multidimension and the countless lands that existed, as well as the existence of scissors that could cut open portals to these other dimensions; but it wouldn't be until she inherited the wand that Cosmica would seek out her own pair of scissors.
It was the first time the Magical High Commission assembled in Mewni, and each member was given a place to sleep in the castle. The Princess informed Lincoln of her plan, she would prove she deserved a pair of scissors by extinguishing Hekapoo's flame as she slept. Unfortunately, the real Hekapoo was waiting when the two mewmans entered her room; cocky, she opened a flaming portal to her dimension. Cosmica, without hesitation, ran into the portal after her; Lincoln, the practical one, ran to tell Queen Hemera and Glossaryck. Once he knew the latter's' would aid his childhood friend, the Grand Mewnister ran back to the room and entered the portal after her.
Although only four minutes passed outside before he entered, eight years went by in dimension X-103. Curious about the Magical High Commission, Lincoln did research on them and found that time in Hekapoo's home passed faster than most others. His friend was nowhere to be seen, by the forger of dimensional scissors was waiting when he arrived. Instead of confronting the older being, Lincoln politely asked where Cosmica was, with Hekapoo explaining that the princess wanted to prove she deserved the scissors, so the red-haired being agreed to forge a pair if Cosmica extinguished all five-hundred flames of herself and her clones. Loyal to his friend, Lincoln Radio told Hekapoo that he would not leave until the princess returned. Fascinated, she agreed on the condition that he would assist her in her work.
It would be two years before Cosmica would return. During that time, Lincoln was taught the foundations of forging by Hekapoo. When the old friends reunited, the two was so overcome with joy they jumped into a deep hug. Applauding the princess on her accomplishment, Hekapoo allowed her flame to be extinguished and presented Cosmica with her dimensional scissors. Celebrating, this moment allowed Lincoln to clear Cosmica's story and release her soul. While the two friends faced each other, they shared a firm handshake before the former Queen disappeared and the white-haired boy entered the next story, Polaria the Navigator.
Lincoln had no control over the stories, nor when he entered or when he could leave, but each story gave him a greater insight into the Queen's character. Polaria was very similar to her mother, Queen Cosmica, but while the latter wanted to travel across dimensions, the former wanted to sail the seas. After the previous head of House Radio and his wife died, Lincoln and the twins became met Princess Polaria when she and their young lad was seven years old. To help the children adjust, the Queen and King took them on a trip to a few of their favorite dimensions; first, they went to Paradisa, a dimension that contained a massive ocean populated with islets, where Lincoln and Polaria spent hours playing pirate and digging in the sand. The adventure ended in the Candy dimension, the sweetest spot to take a family.
During the next three years, the royal family was blessed with three more children; Polaria, excited to be a big sister, went to Lincoln for advice. This time allowed them to build a strong friendship built on the mutual pressure of being the oldest sibling and needing to one day hold the responsibility of a kingdom. To make up for the lack of adventuring, the two would read adventures of sailors; and when they learned the Mewni River lead to the Mewni Ocean, they made a vow to one day take a ship and go to sea. Time passed, then came the celebration of Polaria's eleventh birthday, when she asked her parents for a ship; complying to their daughter's request, the royal parents presented her a ship... in a bottle. The next year, Lincoln dawned his best, blue suit, and approached the Queen and King with his reasoning for why Polaria should have a real ship. Convinced, they agreed to give the princess a ship, but neither her nor the white-haired boy could navigate it until they turned fourteen.
To prepare them, Cosmica and Pyxar left the best friends under the tutelage of her great-uncle Aegean, former Lord of House Waterson. But they would not be the only students under the watch of the princess' 'grunkle', as Lana wanted to become a shipwright, and the veteran sailor's own grandson, Adrian Waterson, would be joining them as well. The group of children would learn the ways of the seafarer; Adrian was taught to move watercraft, Lana how to build and repair a ship from one of Aegean's friends, and Polaria was instructed alongside Lincoln on how to handle cables and sails, tie knots, clean decks, etc., for the next two years. During this time, Polaria and Adrian developed a fierce rivalry that required Lincoln to pull his best friend away every time it got to heated. While on occasional short voyages, the two would enter juvenile prank wars against each other; Polaria would cut his hammock, Adrian would toss her clothes overboard, and one time Lincoln needed to give Adrian a blackeye when he mocked Polaria for crying over a sad song in a tavern.
When it became time for Polaria to inherit the wand, it transformed into a small trident and the princess was presented with her promised ship. Lana had helped constructed the massive galleon, blessed as the 'Seastar', and became the official shipwright, with Adrian as helmsman, and Lincoln as first mate. For almost ten years, he would sail with the crew of a hundred across what would be called 'the Known World', finding danger and excitement wherever they went. Kingdoms near and far, rare dragons, a tribe of mermaids, bands of rabbit pirates, and the inevitable opponent, love. A few years after the Seastar maiden voyage, Polaria announced her intention to marry Adrian Watterson; it was the first occasion in Mewni's history where a princess was married at sea, on her own ship. As first mate, Lincoln gave a speech on the magic of love, friendship, and the ocean; at the end, he spoke with the happy couple alone to wish them a life of happiness.
It was on the final voyage that he finally got to her soul. They were staring at the sunrise on their way back to Mewni, Polaria had been sick for a while and her first mate asked how she was.
"Are you okay, Captain?" He saw how her eyes teared.
"Just a little said over our last voyage." She turned to face him. "I always hoped we could take on the sea forever." A faint glow of a soul appeared, causing Lincoln to whistle, causing the story to end. "It's a shame we can't live out a dream forever."
Returned to his Sinner form, he saw how the story would unfold around them. "Yeah, I really liked being on your crew." Gently, he took hold of her soul and released her. "May you sail to the end of eternity."
It was a joyless walk to the next story, Crescenta the Eager. Compared to her mother and grandmother, Crescenta wasn't an adventurer but she had their infectious joy and deep love for family. Unlike her predecessors, Crescenta was the first 'second' born daughter to inherit the family wand. The first born, Dirhhennia Butterfly, was older by two years, but from a young age it was apparent that her younger sister was more suited to be queen. Dirhhennia was an awkward and insecure young lady while Crescenta was assertive and outspoken. In spite of their differences and complications, the two sisters had a strong affection for, and protective nature towards each other. A characteristic Lincoln held great admiration.
The white-haired boy's role was just like the previous two; lost his parents, only had his twin sisters, and became a valued friend of the royal family. The only difference was this time Lincoln was older than the future queen by two years, and didn't become acquainted with the princesses until later. Unlike in his previous lives, after the death of his parents, Lincoln was sent to a family friend in the Clifford kingdom while Lola and Lana were taken in by the Butterfly family. It was only when he reached age 12, six years later that he be reunited with his younger sisters; it was an adjustment, but in no time the blonde twins welcomed having a big brother. This was when Lincoln Radio met the Butterfly princesses; Dirhhennia was the same age as him, and Crescenta was two years younger.
Reaching the age when it was accustomed for future mewnisters to learn more about politics, Lincoln and the first princess attended council meetings with Crescenta joining in. Over time, Dirhhennia stopped needing to attend as her little sister took her spot. Although he was closer to the eldest in age, Lincoln got along better with Crescenta because they were both driven, intelligent, and too stubborn to stand down. Eventually, the two would spend time together outside of royal duties and would explore the castle; Crescenta took him to the dire wolf kennel where she would train the dog-sized creatures, and Lincoln showed her the magic he learned from studying his families old books. Little did they know, Dirhhennia and the Radio Twins would regularly spy on their siblings, concocting a devious scheme... matchmaking. Being raised alongside each other, the twins loved the princesses like the older sisters they never had; and both the Butterfly brunettes adored Lola and Lana.
For three years, Lincoln and Crescenta had a strong friendship regardless of much their peers and loved ones teased them on their closeness. Although they saw each other as best friends, Lincoln maintained good relationships with the other noble children; the most surprising of which was Lady Redbird's second offspring, Hawk Redbird. In the beginning, the two young men had a firm animosity; Hawk refused to be seen as below any man, and Lincoln was disgusted by his lecherous ways. It was only when the only son of House Redbird began courting Dirhhennia that they began treating each other with civility. They would never call one another 'friend' but they had no more animosity, unlike Crescenta had towards Hawk. The second princess was well informed on the rumors surrounding Hawk's 'interactions', but because she cared so much for her sister, Crescenta kept her mouth shut. However, she did feel satisfaction when she learned of Lincoln's talk with the red-haired young man.
"Excuse me, Princess?" One of Dirhennia's personal maids spoke to her lady's sister. "I was curious... is it true that Sir Radio once turned a 'lord into a lady' with one hand?" She blushed at the question. "I ask because I overheard a conversation with he and Sir Redbird that left the latter... squeamish."
Crescenta laughed. "Oh... it happened." She confirmed. "One of the warnicorns was acting temperamental, so my dear friend... corrected the problem, and put the steed in line."
This caused the maid to gulp. "You are lucky to have such a man looking out for your family, Miss."
One year later, before Crescenta turned fourteen, Queen Polaria called her daughters and informed them of her intentions for Dirhennia to transfer her responsibilities as future queen over to Crescenta. Although it was unsettling for the eldest, she agreed and no bad blood came from the decision. On her big day, Crescenta was given the royal magic wand, and the castle celebrated with a feast that lasted into the night. This also marked something that never happened before in previous stories, a deviation from the established narrative. Or to explain it in simpler terms that most people would understand... the story broke canon.
Lincoln Radio was overlooking a balcony at what was happening outside the castle grounds. To encourage all citizens of the kingdom to celebrate, the white-haired young man arranged for circus troupes to perform in villages across the kingdom. Right outside the capital boarder was a three ring circus of Lincoln's own special construction. He actually needed to leave as he would be giving a special performance that would be broadcasted through Radio Tower.
"There you are!" Crescenta ran up to glomp her best friend by surprise. "Your missing the celebration! I think your sisters snuck in, because I just saw Lana digging through the garbage."
"Of course, they would." As exhausting the twins could be, Lincoln valued their spontaneous nature. "I'll ask Millie to collect them after I leave."
"Leave?" For a rare moment, the princess was quiet. "The party is only beginning! At least stay for a drink and a dance!"
"I'm afraid I can't, as a performer I need to arrive early to get ready for the show." He gave her a smile. "I am happy for you. Just stay close to your sister, you'll have more fun with her and her beau than looking after the twins."
"You're really leaving... going to perform at the circus?" She gave a tiny smile. "You always brought joy to others, even commoners."
"Magic is meant to inspire people!" Link beamed. "You know I always believed that. Even if our people can't use it, what you and I do inspires them to believe in dreams grander than themselves." He walked away. "I know you'll become a great queen one day. Enjoy your night."
Before he could get far, Crescenta grabbed the sleeve of his tunic. "I want... to go too." She looked up, tears in her eyes. "We canboth be in the spot light!"
Another word wasn't spoken, as the story became undone. All around them, cracks formed that showed how the story had and should have gone but didn't. Soon, blinding white light overtook everything and the story was over. Or, rather, the story stopped and something or someone skipped to the next.
"Listen up, you New Money, Feather-brained, Douchebag!" Outside of House Avarius, the imp Blitz pounds his fist on the door. "I know you have magic scissors! If you don't open the door in ten seconds, I will break it down, beat you to death with a boot, loot your home, kill your family, make a sandwich because I'm hungry as fuck, and then I will take your shitty scissors by force!"
Accompany him to Mewnister of Monster Rights' home, Loona and Octavia stood back while Star went up to the door.
"Let me try." The blonde girl gently pulled Blitz from the door. "Sorry about that Ludo! It's me, Star Butterfly!"
A second later, the door opened to reveal Ludo Avarius in his bathrobe, holding a giant cookie and a glass of warm milk. "Star Butterfly? What was with all that yelling? And why do you people want my scissors?"
"Short story, Lincoln has been captured by the Magical High Commission, and we need those scissors to rescue him."
Collected, the short kappa took a bite of his cookie and drank the entire contents of his milk before he responded. "I'll be right back."
"You better!" Blitz yelled as Ludo went inside. "How do you know this guy? No offense, but he looks like the kind of bastard your people would be hunting for either food or sport."
"He's a royal advisor for monster's rights. Trust me, we weren't always this chill. He actually tried to kill me and my family a bunch of times, nearly succeed a few."
"You for real?" The imp questioned. "A dickhead tries to wipe you out, steal your home, and you make him one of the pricks you go to for advice!?" What kind of ass-brained, two-faced, shallow assed world is this!?"
"Politics." Star answered as if she was just stating a fact.
The three demons in attendance looked at each other, coming to a collective understanding. "Makes sense."
Ludo returned, empty-handed. "Okay, good news and bad news. Which do you want first?"
"Give us the bad."
"I don't have my scissors, I lost them to that friend of yours in a game of basketball. You know the one with the beanie? I think her name is... Anna?"
"Janna!" Star corrected. "What's the good news!?"
"I know where she is right now. She's with Tom."
"Thanks Ludo!" The former princess guided her friends away. "I know where Tom lives, the way to the Underworld shouldn't be too far."
"Who is Tom?" Octavia asked.
"Oh, my ex-boyfriend. Well, my ex who had anger issues, but he worked hard to change himself, then we became friends, then got back together until we broke up for the final time." Star looked away for a moment. "Yeah, I was going through a hectic time with my home under attack, my mom disappearing, discovering my family is full of horrible secrets, almost losing everyone I love... you know how it is?"
Neither of the demons responded right away. "Damn, you might just be the first person in this shithole I actually like?" Blitz grinned.
Dinner was simple, a bowl of turnip and squirrel soup with a piece of stale corn bread; not palatable, but still edible. The room was dimly lit by the candle on the table between Lincoln and the cloaked figure as they ate. Instead of talking, they ate in silence due to their travel fatigue and the strain of the dungeon.
"I'm going to sleep." The woman said, finishing her meal.
The road house had a limited number of rooms, but the travel companions were able to get one with two beds. As the cloaked figure went to sleep, Lincoln stared at the flame in the candle silently, remembering the final stories of the Ascension Era; his dear friend, Febe the Red One, and the ultimate wingman, Festivia the Fun.
Inside Febe's story, after Lincoln had lost his parents, he was sent to study at Elfendor while his sisters were placed under the care of Lady Dirhhennia and her husband, Alder. During his time in the University Dimension, Lincoln was cared for diligently by Moxxie and Millie. Their charge was always a curious and loving child, but with the loss of his parents to Death and the loss of his sisters to Politics, the joyful child became detached and hallow. The only thing that could bring a smile to his face was the sound of Moxxie playing the piano. So, for two hours everyday after his lessons, the red demon would play soft music.
As he grew, Lincoln Radio would demonstrate himself as a scholastic prodigy. In preparation for the day he would become Mewni's Grand Mewnister, he took classes in Political Science, International Relations, Business, and Psychology; in his leisure time, he learned Theater, Musical Theory, and Literature. For ten years he was at Elfendor, then he returned to his childhood home. His return was marked by an elegant ball at the castle, ending with Lincoln giving an elegant display of magical showmanship that even Glossaryck applauded. At the party, he met Princess Febe Butterfly, and her love, Rowan of House Forest.
For close to a year Lincoln spent acquainting himself with the kingdom and his twin sisters. They were upset about never seeing their brother after so long, but both Lola and Lana were thrilled to have him back. Despite not knowing each other for long, both he and Febe became great friends because of their shared love for romantic stories. Additionally, because of their closeness in age, he acted as a tutor in the princess' magical training. Then, it came time for celebration of the century, the Grand Tournament, a competition of knights and nobles from kingdoms across the continent with competitors competing for the top prize. That year's winner was Rowan Forest; his reward was a wreath traditionally given to the beloved of the champion. Appealing to Febe's romantic nature, he placed the wreath on her head as a form of proposal.
Ten years later, Lincoln would have freed her soul. In the story, he became Grand Mewnister and Febe became Queen after the deaths of her mother, father, and aunt, along with the first meeting between Mewni and Underworld royalty. It was the night of a rare occasion for the Underworld, the Blood Moon Ball. Attending the party was Queen Febe, King Rowan, and Lincoln accompanying them as a friend/guard. It was magical night, the celebration ending with the King and Queen of Mewni being chosen by the Blood Moon, and sharing a moonlight waltz; but that wasn't the end. On their way back to the capital, their carriage stopped so the royal couple could look at the moon together; what happened next was Lincoln Radio's greatest regret. While he was distracted, an arrow had pierced Rowan's chest, slowly killing him. Overcome with sadness, Febe grabbed his body while Lincoln tried to save him, but it was not enough.
Joined in their shared loss, the story came to an end and the young Lincoln was left with the ghost of Queen Febe. No words were spoken, but they shared a tender smile before she vanished and the boy went to the final story of the era.
It was the final time Lincoln Radio would lose his parents in the Age of Ascension. Unlike in previous lives, this Lincoln was born in a time of tension and strife; King Rowan's death sparked conflict with the people responsible, the Mud Dwellers. Leading to the first rebellion to happen since the kingdom's founding. Then came the next phase, the Mud Dwellers invaded the Forest Watchtower and took the noble family hostage, evolving conflict into an established war. Fearful of the princess' safety, Queen Febe sent Festivia away; accompanying the princess was the Radio children and Quartz Stone, nephew of Sir Gold Stone, along with Millie and Moxxie to watch over them. After twenty-two days of travel, the group reached the Silvan Kingdom.
Culture shock was inevitable for the children, a different land with different architecture, clothing, culture, etc., but overtime they adjusted. Other than the Silvan princess, Silena, the only friends the foreign children had were each other; or rather, Lincoln was the mutual friend of the other two while Quartz could barely face Festivia without looking away. The Mewni princess always had a jovial and cheerful personality with an incline towards entertaining; because of this, King Silvan had Festivia put under the tutelage of the greatest performers in the kingdom. Meanwhile, Lincoln felt powerless, but soon found inspiration in the stories of the kingdom's great warriors, athletes, and mythological figures. After much time convincing the king, the white-haired boy was allowed to train with the Silvan Kingdom's greatest soldiers.
Two years later, Lincoln and Festivia turned eight. The princess excelled in her studies of the arts while the heir of House Radio had adapted well into his training. The twins had grown as well, Lola clung to Festivia like an idol while Lana spent all the time she could get in the wilderness chasing small animals. Four more years wood pass before the children would receive word of their homeland; Queen Febe sent a letter to her daughter informing her that the Mud Dweller rebellion ended, allowing Festivia and her friends to return home. They left that night.
It was late when they reached Butterfly Castle, Lincoln was beside the princess when he performed the whistling spell, allowing him to end the story. Seeing each other's true selves, they both saw how the story would fully unfold; like the numerous before, Lincoln proved himself to be a loyal friend to the Queen. The final door of the Ascension Era appeared, allowing him to leave. He walked out the door into a more developed road but was surprised to find someone was waiting for him.
"You... you're here." That was all he could say.
"Okay, so Lincoln got himself captured and needs to be saved?" Tom Lucitor, wearing his satin pajamas was restraining Blitz and Loona with magic fire. "I got it, you need me to join you!"
The two Hellborn demons had tried to fight their way in but were quickly stopped once they entered Tom's room.
"Well, actually, we're here to see Jana." Star corrected.
On que, Janna walked out of the next room wearing one of Tom's shirts and a house shoes, eating a bowl of cereal. When the human teenager caught sight of Star in the room with three demons, she went deer-eyed and stopped in her tracks. Tom began sweating profusely while Star looked between the two for a moment. Meanwhile, a smirking Blitz looked at the Underworld prince while Loona and Octavia simply raised an eyebrow.
"Star... and company?" Janna threw the bowl away. "It's crazy! I got lost and went through the magic gold place again! Accept this time I came here, isn't that insane!?"
"Yeah." Octavia giggled. "I take it you definitelycame here if you haven't left."
"I know 'this' is a whole story." Star gestured to the situation. "But right now we need your help. Lincoln got captured by the Magical High Commission and we need to get him out with Ludo's dimensional scissors that you won in basketball!"
Lifting her hat, Janna pulled out the scissors and presented them to her good friend. "This never happened." She squinted.
"Understood." The blonde girl accepted.
As his guests were leaving, Tom released the magic he was using. "Make sure the kid gets home safely!"
"And tell Lucy she owes me a coffin for 'she knows what'!" Janna waved goodbye.
Leaving the castle, Blitz couldn't resist an opportunity to gossip. "So... your friend is definitely bangin' your ex."
"Oh, I know." Opening a portal back to the others, Star commented on what happened. "But I'll work out those feelings later. Pretty sure I support them."
"I swear, if Lincoln is still alive after all this is done, I will throw him into a portal to someplace worse then here." Loona vented. "Satan dammit, I never thought I'd meet so many freaks in one night."
"Oh, this is nothing." Star laughed it off. "You should have been here for Halloween, or Stump Day." She grabbed the hellhound by the face. "Always honor the Stump."
Angry, Loona removed the shorter girl's hands. "Don't. Ever. Do that. Again."
Continuing towards the next Boss room on foot, Lincoln and his companion resumed their journey. Before they knew how far they've gone, they had reached the door to the next age of the Butterfly Kingdom. It was beautifully decorated with jewels and gold, and displayed silhouettes of queens in heroic poses. This was the door to the kingdom's most glorious age, a time where Queens achieved fame for their heroic and selfless acts, the Age of Heroes.
"I'm a little nervous about going in." Lincoln spoke, broken.
"But you will." She spoke. "You were always too stubborn to walk away."
The devil-tailed boy turned to face the cloaked woman. "I still don't know how you got here."
She removed her hood, revealing a young woman with brown hair and blue eyes, along with blue waning moons on her cheeks. "I went against the story. I'm not sure how or why, but I did."
"This may sound selfish, but I'm happy you were by my side, Crescenta. I don't think I would have the strength to continue without a friend."
Laughing, the Eager couldn't fight her desire to laugh. "We both know you would find a way to keep going."
Another short walk to the door, Lincoln paused to face the former queen. "What do think is going to happen when I open this door?"
"I don't know." Crescenta responded, matching his empty demeanor. "But I choose to be here when you do."
A small smile appeared on the boy's face. Taking one last look at the sunrise, Lincoln turned back to the door and opened it. "To the Age of Heroes."
