Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Trapped In a Butterfly Sim (Early Years)

After many dungeon crawls, Lincoln was certain there was nothing awaiting him that would be surprising. However, he never anticipated that the moment he activated the link, he would be right outside the boss door. The aesthetic of the dungeon was simple, an endless lake of golden liquid under a blue sky going on for eternity. Besides himself, the only other occupant of this realm was a giant door in the shape of a spellbook. Decorating the door was the words 'The Early Years', the first time in Lincoln's short history of making dungeons had a door been inscribed with words.

"Interesting." The boy stood in front of the door, amazed.

"Even I have to admit, this is a sight." Talking as if she had always been there, Jane Doe admired the door.

"Jane?" Lincoln could hardly believe it. "It's you!" He ran up and hugged her.

"Yeah, sorry I was away for so long." She apologized casually.

"I haven't seen you in nearly a month."

"I told you before, I'm like a tutor who pops in when you need me. You haven't been needing me until now." Jane Doe looked around. "You really got your work cut out this time."

"I have so many questions!" Link spoke frantically. "Why I did I see those ghosts? Why did my future self come to see me? How am I already at the boss?"

Jane shook her head. "I can't tell you. What I can tell you is there are three ways to achieve a desired goal: Combat, Diplomacy, Stealth" She instructed. "No matter what situation you find yourself in, you have to determine for yourself the best course of action. To fight, to talk, or to elude."

The devil-tailed boy considered this information. "This dungeon is not like others, is it?"

"No, when you go through those doors, you will find souls, but you can't help them by destroying some horrific adversary."

"I can't?" This is what really through Lincoln for a loop. "Then, how do I help them?"

The mysterious entity smiled, then pointed to Lincoln's heart. "You already know how."

Preparing himself, the boy took a deep breath and approached the door. When no gatekeeper showed up, Lincoln placed his hand on the book cover and it flipped open to a blinding light. Instantly, information entered the young mage's mind. It wasn't a painful experience, but the rush of knowledge was as suffocating as drowning in an ocean. By the time he found his way out, a somewhat familiar voice called his name.

"Lincoln? Lincoln, you have to get up now." She spoke.

Massaging his forehead, the boy kept his eyes closed as he turned to his side. "Ow, I had a crazy dream. I was on a lake of gold."

"Sounds lovely, Little One." The woman said, lighting a candle next to the boy. "But you need to get home before your Uncle Alastor gets worried. He would have half the village looking for you."

"Village?" Puzzled, Lincoln opened his eyes. Disoriented, he found himself in a thatched cottage with a timber frame. "You house... I don't recognize it?"

"You must still be dizzy after a long day gathering iron from the bogs." The woman's true appearance became known, she was Darlene, whom Lincoln had first met in the garden.

"Are you finally awake?" A younger voice asked. Waiting at the entrance was a girl a little older than Lincoln with brown hair and matching eyes.

"I'm still a growing boy, Urania." Lincoln got up and pouted.

"Come on, Linky. Let's get you home before the Village Head sounds the alarm." The girl, Urania, tussled the child's white hair. "Even I'm not brave enough to face your uncle when he's angry."

"Clearly, you're not the Master of Convincing, Star." He caught himself with thoughts of girl who looked like his oldest friend, Urania, but with blonde hair, blue eyes, and pink hearts on her face. "Sorry, I don't know where that came from."

Butterfly Castle- Tapestry Room

"Should we be worried about this?" Marco Diaz asked, having brought his famous nachos for everyone to share. "He's just sitting in there."

It had been a few minutes since Lincoln entered the hut and nobody heard a sound. With nothing better to do, everyone joined in a little picnic to wait for the young boy to finish.

"Lincoln never explained much about this." Moxxie answered. "I think we need to give him time."

"All I know is if my boy ain't out of there in five minutes, I'm callin' Mrs. Mayberry." Millie was nervous about the whole ordeal.

"Mrs. Mayberry? Do you mean Lincoln's aunt?" Star asked, eating nachos.

"Aunt? No, Darlin'. Jill and Martha are-" The female imp was quieted by Stolas' magic.

"What my little acquaintance is trying to say, Ms. Star, is that those two are close with Lincoln and join him on all his little escapades like this." The owl demon said.

"Does he do this often?" Marco asked.

"A lot lately, Sport." Blitz answered. "And lately he's been keeping all the loot he gets for himself! I thought taking him in meant we shared all profits!"

"I thought you only took the kid in because he's blackmailing us." Loona corrected before addressing Marco. "Listen, Kid, I don't know what he gets up to but he is anything but weak. If he runs into something dangerous, I'd bet my fur he'd find a way to come out on top."

Time passed since Lincoln of House Radio had that bizzare dream of the golden lake. Days turned to weeks, and weeks turned to months, and with each passing day that dream became more fleeting. In no time, the young man returned to his daily life without issue.

"Young Radio, it's time to wake up." Niffty, one of the house peons, spoke at the door.

Lincoln awoke in his wool bed. The boy wiped the sleep from his eyes and saw his Uncle's one-eyed servant. "Thank you, Ms. Niffty."

"Make sure you're down in time for breakfast, Master Alastor has something he needs to discuss with you at the forge when you finish."

"I will, Ms. Niffty." Lincoln hopped out from under the quilt and onto the wooden floor.

Getting ready in the morning was a simple process for him. First, Lincoln would wash himself off with the bow of warm water and towel Niffty provided. Next, he would change out of sleep tunic and into his clothing for the day; today, he would be wearing a white blouse with dark trousers, over his blouse was a red vest, and on the boy's feet were dark, heeled boots. Lincoln left his room on the second floor of the stone manor, and went down stairs to eat the breakfast prepared by the house maid.

"Here you are, Young Master Radio. A plate of corn waffles, a link of pork sausage, fresh picked berries, and a tall goblet of milk for the growing boy." Niffty patted the boy's head after presenting his plate.

Gratefully, Lincoln ate the well-made breakfast and handed the dishes off to the maid. Before he could leave, Lincoln went back to his room to put on the most important aspect of attire, his family mantle. For generations, every head of House Radio and their intended heir wore a red cape that displayed the family coat of arms on the pauldron over the left shoulder. The symbol displayed the skull of a stag with the family motto underneath, 'Fortune favors Dedication'.

Leaving Radio Manor, the lad made his way through the village on his way to speak with his uncle, Alastor Radio. The family was young, Alastor being the second head after the death of Lincoln's mother, Harriet, after she was killed at a meeting with King of Monsters to negotiate peace. In spite of their sudden claim to authority, Radio family was respected for their natural abilities to use magic. Because of this, and for his good character, Lincoln was deeply regarded by the village.

"Gooding Morning, Young Lord!" The butcher waved to Lincoln from his small shop.

"Good Day to you as well." Lincoln gave a polite bow.

"How are you, Young Lord?" Another local greeted.

"Very well. I wish you good fortune."

Further into the village, the boy saw his childhood friend and older sister figure, Urania, with her mother on their way from the market. Spotting the boy themselves, Darlene waved for the white-haired boy to come over.

"Good Morning, Lincoln." Something he always valued about this family, they always spoke to him casually. "Off to a meeting with your Uncle?"

"I am, Lady Darlene. While I have your attention, could you talk to your mother about having another mantle made for me. This one is starting to feel a little tight in the neck." Lincoln awkwardly stretched the collar. "If it would be no issue, I can pay in advance."

"Come on, Linky." Urania giggled. "You remember our deal. We make all your families clothing at cost of materials, in return your Uncle doesn't collect rent." She gave the younger peer a noogie. "Just come over tomorrow and we'll get you fitted."

"I wish you ladies a successful day." The boy left.

A short distance from the village was the Radio family forge. Alastor, Lincoln, and the late Harriet can all use magic, but their natural abilities were limited to spells associated with the four elements, Fire, Air, Earth, and Water, each member with a stronger affinity towards Air and another element. Harriet's second affinity was with water, allowing her to create heavy rains to water crops. Alastor is inclined towards fire magic, specifically using lightning spells to attack invaders. Finally, Lincoln was strongly attuned to earth magic, more focused on metal; using magic, the boy could clear land for use, collect iron and other metals for crafting and trade, and creating simple structures out of dirt, stone, and iron. To help his nephew after the death of his sister, Alastor had a forge made so the boy could practice control.

"Uncle? You wanted to talk?" Lincoln knocked.

Speaking with the local blacksmith, stood Alastor of House Radio. He was a tall man with a thin frame, brown hair with matching eyes he masked with a pair of spectacles, and always carried himself with a smile on his face. Despite being related, the man shared few physical features with both his sister and nephew. Regardless, people always knew them as House Radio by the matching capes they wore. Catching sight of the boy, Alastor twriled his cane.

"Aw, Nephew, just who I wanted to see!" The man beckoned. "I'm glad you're here. A trader from up north brought something that caught my attention, and I want you to see it."

Lincoln looked at what his guardian was so intrigued by, a misshaped knife. "This is it?"

"It may not look like much now, but it has quite the story." Alastor lectured. "Some time ago, a young blacksmith apprentice was asked to prepare this iron knife but accidently allowed particles of another substance enter. Not only was the final product useable, but turned out to be stronger than regular iron."

"This knife?" He picked it up.

"This is what I want from you, Nephew. Just imagine what could become of our fair village if we could harness the potential of this metal." Alastor headed for the exit. "Now, I need to leave for a few days to see to pressing matters. Can I trust you to see after the village in my absence?"

The young mage saluted. "No problem!"

For the rest of the day, Lincoln studied the knife in his room to determine what could have been added to the iron during forging. From what he could determine it wasn't another metal and it was black in color. It wasn't until past lunch that he understood what it could be, a mineral he read about in his mother's books called 'Carbon', a material that could be found in rock sediments and charcoal. Taking a fist full of iron power and the extracted carbon; using magic, Lincoln put the two ingredients into a heated mixture.

"Everything going well?" The only person who came to check on the boy was Husk, another peon of Alastor's, but more surly.

"In just another second..." It was not finished, in Lincoln's hand was a small rectangle of the finished metal. "I did it! I recreated a new way of using iron!"

"Great... what's it called?" Husk took a swig from his usual bottle.

The question took a while to answer. "What is it? I mean, I created it, I should give it a name. Lincite? No, Radium? Hm, I don't know about that. What do you-?" Lincoln saw the rectangle was gone. "What happened to it?"

"To your left." The older man pointed.

Lincoln looked to the corner of the workshop and saw Niffty was looking at the metal with intrigue. "Ms. Niffty, why did you steal my... steal?" He contemplated. "Steal? Ste-el? Steel! I shall call this wonderous mixture 'Steel'!"

"Yeah, Steel!" The maid joined in the celebrating.

"If you're done naming useless junk, you have to go see the weavers." Husk reminded Link of his promise to see his best friend and her family about his new cape.

"I forgot!" Lincoln ran from the manor towards his friend's home.

However, before he reached the door, he saw Urania running out with her embroidery wheel. Concerned for her safety, the young mage followed her towards the river. He knew where she was going, it was her favorite spot to be when she had an argument with her grandmother. Lincoln saw her drop to the riverside and joined her.

"You and your grandmother, again?"

'It's my birthday." She told him.

"I forgot!" Lincoln couldn't believe his carelessness. "I don't know how I could have forgot!"

"I'm not angry." Urania smiled a little. "Not at you. My grandmother thought my embroidery was a waste of good string and... I just need some time to think."

Together, the two looked up to the sky. It was almost sunset, but the moons could still be seen. "Urania, do you ever think they're might be more out there?"

"I guess, like theirs something more I could do. Like, what if I could use magic like you?" Urania liked the idea. "If I could, I would make a giant home like yours and live there with my mom."

"I understand the feeling. Sometimes, I think about my mom. And sometimes I wonder if I'm making my family proud since her demise." The boy was open.

"Don't be a fool." The older girl giggled then draped an arm over the boy for a hug. "Your mother loved you. And I know one day, you'll be the greatest leader any mewman would be honored to have."

At peace, Lincoln closed his eyes and he began to whistle. As he did, he felt thoughts rush through his head. Things he barely understood, but felt familiar. It was only after he saw a young girl who looked like Harriet that he understood that these were memories. He had memories of another him... no, memories of who he really was. Startled, the boy shot his eyes open, and he was at the river but there was someone else beside him. She looked like Urania but older, more regally dressed, and had butterfly symbols on her face.

"Wait... Urania?" Lincoln, returned to his Sinner form, stood up.

She stood up, then turned around to look at the giant fire behind them. "What a lovely dream."

"You were the First Queen of Mewni. Now... what happened to us?" He asked, not out of anger but concern.

"My story, it's been told and retold so much, it's basically myth. Nobody knows my true history. My mother, how I found the crystal, not even what I did at... the Great Monster Massacre." She wiped away a tear. "People want to remember me as a scrupulous hero, truth is, I was an ordinary girl who tried to do what she thought was right. But in the end, I got too much wrong."

He didn't know Urania the First, not truly perhaps, but he had memories of his time in their dream. He saw the kind of person she truly was, and his response to her speech, a hug.

"We're both like that." Lincoln admitted. "I try to do what I think is right everyday, but I still think I'm doing everything wrong. You made mistake, Urania, but you only ever made them out of love. Love for your family and your people." He broke the hug. "I promise, I will make sure people know your real story."

Smiling, she raised her version of the Butterfly wand, a simple crystal in the shape of a butterfly tied to a spinning needle with a red ribbon. No sooner than she did, it turned into a reddish-brown orb, her soul.

"It is a shame we woke up." Urania laughed. "I like'd thinking of you as the brother I never had."

Accepting, Lincoln accepted her soul and it caused everything to break apart. Forming in the cracks were the memories he could have made in the dream; the two of them finding the village in flames, using magic alongside each other as they fought monsters, and applauding his best friend as she is crowed Queen. They didn't happen, but they played before them both and in their thoughts like treasured memories. Once the memories stopped, a small door appeared with the word, 'Solena', on it.

"This was only the first chapter of history." Urania patted the boy's head. "I wish you luck, Old Friend."

Confident, Lincoln stepped forward and opened the door.

"Christ, how long can that kid stay in there!?" Blitz was bored, so much that he resorted to reading from the royal spellbook. "Damn, this one broad in here reminds me of an ex I had... do you think reincarnation's a thing?"

"You heard me, Jill!" Talking on her phone, Millie called Lincoln's Pawns. "He's been in there for who the fuck knows how long! What do you mean, 'No time should pass'!? Listen, I don't know what kinda of rich, royal nutjob shit is happening, but if my boy doesn't make it out, I will..." She took a moment to notice the young Meteora staring at her. "You know what I'm capable of!"

Cleaning his guns outside the hut, Moxxie watched over the tranquil child.

"Your wife really cares for the boy." Eclipsa walked up to the imp assassin.

He smiles a little. "I guess he just has that affect on people."

"Yeah, so that's my whole story." Talking with Loona and Octavia, Star Butterfly had told them some of her adventures with Lincoln, which led to sharing her whole story of going to Earth. "It's a shame I couldn't see Lincoln and his family as much as I would like, but I guess everyone has their own stories."

While the younger teen was smiling like a dope, Octavia stared with her beak open. "And I thought I had mother issues."

"You know, I had some suspicions if you and him were related, but hiring all that just makes it my headcanon." The wolf girl had a drink.

"He's kind of like my brother, but we're not related. You know, he has an older sister named, 'Luna', but with a 'u'... just like my Great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother! Isn't that amazing!?"

"Yeah." Via nodded her head sarcastically. "One of the most common girl things to name a girl after, the Moon, and you know three people with the name. It's amazing."

Strange enough, Loona laughed at this, causing Star and Octavia to join. From afar, Stolas watched his daughter socialize. He was proud of her, but also envious that she hadn't been as open with him for many years.

"It's hard watching them grow up." Siting beside the owl demon, River ate a leg of mutton. "One minute, they're trying to walk, the next they're trying their best to get away from you."

Stolas giggled. "It is, isn't it? I remember when she used to yell in the middle of the night for me to come protect her from a bad dream, and now she barely tells me anything."

Sitting on the demon prince's other side, Globgor was watching as his daughter went to play with Loona's tail. "Don't spoil the ending. I didn't get to know my daughter the first time she went through puberty, now I'll have to live through that."

"First time?" Stolas inquired, causing the other two men to explain what happened, leaving the Goetia baffled. "My, I suppose every family has its difficulties. Still, how did she live so long to survive her own descendants."

The monster King became sullen. "She didn't. Star, Moon, and the others, they're the children of my wife's first daughter, Luna. I didn't get to know her because of... life just doesn't work like you want it to."

Stolas looked at his daughter as she laughs at Meteora for pulling on the hellhound woman's tail. "It doesn't, but I think life finds a way of bringing you exactly what you need." He smiles, hopefully.

Similar to Urania, Lincoln entered the story of the Second Queen of Mewni, Solena the Smitten. He had lost his memories of his real self while taking on the role of 'Lincoln of House Radio' like before. This new life was different in some ways; he was still a descendant of Harriet and Alastor's nephew, but instead of living with him, Lincoln was given to his mother's friend to raise, Carmilla. In this new world, Carmilla Carmine was a retired soilder who became a merchant.

Living with Carmilla and her two daughters, Clara and Odette, Lincoln was able to develop his magic potential due to living in a time of peace. When Solena got older, Carmilla took on the role of the princess' ballet teacher with Lincoln joining her for lessons. Just like with Urania, Lincoln Radio was a childhood friend of the princess and the two developed a brother-sister bond. Except, Lincoln was three years older than Solena and aided her in magic lessons with Glossaryck, serving as the guide's teaching assistant.

It would take living in the story for years before Lincoln could reach her soul. He wasn't certain what requirements it took to reach it, but he suspected it required building a connection with the past queen. When he met the 'real' Solena, she gave him a deep hug as their story concluded. Next, the entrance to the boss room reappeared, allowing for the boy to leave. He and Solena hugged a final time, then the boy left.

On the other side was a perfect replica of the Butterfly Kingdom wilderness. Lincoln found himself on a dirt road along a field of corn. This reminded him of how dungeons usually worked, so he went off to the next area of the dungeon.

"Not what you were expecting was it?" Jane Doe kicked a rock down the road. "I gotta admit, I thought it would take until you or she died before you get her soul."

"I know you can't give me an explanation for a lot of the things that go on..." Link spoke calmly. "BUT CAN YOU AT LEAST GIVE ME A HEADS UP!?"

"Wow, you seemed so adjusted."

"ADJUSTED!? YOU THINK I LIKE WHAT'S HAPPENING!? Since I died I haven't known what I've been doing! I feel like... a dog chasing a car! I see my goal and every time I try to get it, I don't even know what to do when I get close! In the time of less than two months, I became a demon, an assassin, a dungeon crawler, and I'm gonna go back in time to give myself advice for reasons I don't understand!"

"Okay, okay, when Cinderella got a fairy godmother, she handled it with more humility." Jane tried to calm the boy down.

"You don't even know what you are! What gives you the right to judge me when all you do is watch from the side and make asinine remarks about something you don't have any say in!?" Lincoln and Jane looked towards the reader for a second.

"Listen, Lincoln." She removed her sunglasses. "I know it may not make sense right now, but everything that happens to you and all your choices all serve for a greater purpose."

"Can you even tell me what it is?"

"I don't know." She shrugged. "I'm not exactly omniscient. I know all that has or is happening, but what will happen is like looking through a straw you get in a to-go cup."

Lincoln exhaled. "Sorry for going off like that. I suppose we're both just lost children."

"Boy, I'm a grown ass woman." Jane put her sunglasses back on. "Oh, do you also have your chess set?"

Confused, Lincoln checked his Inventory. "I still got it, but somehow all my black pieces are lost." He looked at her. "Why do you ask?"

Behind her sunglasses, Jane Doe had a mischievous look in her eye. "It helps to stay informed."

The two continued walking down the road, passing by small huts periodically that contained families of farmers. Whenever a 'NPC' took notice of the boy, they would smile and wave him off. It was four miles down when he spotted the Butterfly Tower from the 'Early Years' Boss Room. Seeing it again so soon, nostalgia overtook Lincoln and he wiped his eyes.

"What does it feel like?" Jane asked. "When you leave a story, do you still remember it?"

Lincoln took a deep breath. "I remember, but it's... misty? It's like looking back on a story to honest. A story that deeply touched me, and I'm looking back on it after many years. I still recall the moments that made me feel happy, or sad, or scared, or angry, but I don't see it as my life."

Further down the road, he sees the next door. It looked just like the previous door, in the shape of a spellbook, but the words inscribed on it was 'Age of Ascension'.

"Be careful, you'll have to be cautious in here." Jane warned. "Whenever you feel stressed or confused, whistle."

The boy nodded and prepared himself for his next challenge. "Whistle?" He recalled the piece of paper his future self gave him, then pulled it out his pocket to confirm. "That time I regained my memories with Urania, I was whistling." He looked at his guide. "I was performing this spell! The Whistling Spell!"

She nodded. "I tell you, people always try to make things more complex than they have to, but I think that what makes it more interesting."

Chuckling, Lincoln put the paper away. "We you on the other side." With that, he opened the door and entered.

Alone, Jane Doe removed her sunglasses once again. "I'm sorry I couldn't tell you more... but I will be there when you need me."
