Chapter 58: The Hidden Scar
Location: Northeastern Gaia – Ruins of Ilyssan Ridge
The winds howled through what was once a tranquil village nestled between towering cliffs and flowing streams. Now, it lay still—cracked stone homes buried under time, and trees twisted into silent mockeries of their former life. Above it all, the Rift shimmered like a wound in the sky, pulsing with faint Abyssal energy.
Elaine Synthesis 7 stepped off the airship first.
Her long ash-blonde hair danced in the wind as Aetheris, her rapier, shimmered faintly at her side. But there was no cheer in her step—only a focused silence.
"This is where you grew up?" asked Mia softly, stepping beside her.
Elaine nodded once, her usual bright smile absent.
"It used to be beautiful. Windmills… sunflower fields… the old bell tower that rang every morning."
Cyg surveyed the ruins through tactical lenses.
"Now it's a known Abyssal tremor point. Spikes in Rift energy every 72 hours. The terrain is unstable."
Harriet cracked her knuckles.
"Let's clean it out."
"No," Elaine interrupted. "This isn't just an Abyssal zone. There's something deeper. I can feel it in the wind."
"What do you mean?" Sylvia asked.
Elaine's eyes narrowed, and she pointed toward a cliffside ravine.
"That used to be the central shrine. My mother was the Wind-Keeper. She guarded the Flowstone buried there… until the day she vanished."
Location: Shrine of the Flowstone – Underground Cavern
Descending into the cavern beneath the village, the Octagon moved cautiously. Wind echoed unnaturally through the tunnels, whispering voices that didn't belong.
Mia held her grimoire open, casting soft light.
"The etheric field is warped. This place… it's halfway merged with the Rift."
Suddenly, Hikari froze.
Her hand flew to Sanguira—the blade humming violently.
"There's something ahead."
They stepped into a vast chamber, vines of black crystal pulsing against the walls. At the center: a statue of a woman with long hair, arms raised to the sky—her face eerily resembling Elaine.
"My mother," Elaine whispered.
And then the statue moved.
Location: Shrine Core – Inner Sanctum
The statue cracked open, revealing a specter of wind and sorrow—an Abyssal-possessed form, partially human, partially voidborne.
"Elaine…" the specter said in a voice soft as mist, but broken and wrong.
Elaine stepped forward slowly.
"Mother…?"
"They took me… bound me… the Rift became my soul. I held the wind for too long…"
The creature convulsed, its form twisting. Elaine raised her rapier—torn between love and duty.
"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I'm here to set you free."
The battle exploded with gale-force wind.
Charlotte summoned Kyrosyn, flinging time-locked chakrams through the vortex, while Sylvia's Orisha rang a harmonic note that cracked the air itself. Cyg issued precise tactical orders mid-combat, guiding Mia and Eun-Ha to flank while Hikari protected the rear.
But it was Elaine who stood at the center, her wind clashing against corrupted wind, her voice steady.
"You taught me to dance with the wind."
Her blade flashed—one final strike through the heart of the specter.
The creature screamed… then smiled.
"You've… grown so strong…"
And faded.
Location: Ilyssan Ridge – Sunset
The Octagon stood amidst the restored shrine ruins. The Rift energy had collapsed, and the land… began to breathe again.
Elaine sat alone atop the old bell tower, staring out at the valley.
"She was still in there," she murmured as Charlotte approached, carrying two steaming cups of tea.
"You saved her," Charlotte said.
"I didn't save her." Elaine's voice trembled. "I… released her."
She wiped her tears.
"The wind feels lighter now."
Below, Mia helped Hikari re-wrap her hands after another flare from her Artifact. Eun-Ha stood at a distance, quietly praying over the land. Cyg reviewed his notes while Harriet slept, head resting on a broken log.
A moment of peace.
One they had earned.
Location: Gaia HQ – War Table (Later That Night)
Thea received their report.
"The Abyss is mutating faster than before. Possession of the dead. Memories becoming hosts."
Irene frowned.
"It's not just invasion. It's infiltration of the soul."
Thea turned to the map.
New rift readings flared in red along the western coast. One word appeared in black glyphs:
"Vulcan's Wake."
The next threat would not be subtle.
