Chapter 57: Eyes of the Void
Location: Gaia HQ – Tactical War Room, Sub-Level 9
The war table glowed dimly in the darkness. Blue lines traced the global etheric map, but tonight, the central display showed something else: a red blinking node that should not exist.
Irene Synthesis 3, her hair tied neatly, stood at the front of the room with her arms crossed. Her voice was grave.
"We've discovered a breach."
Around the table sat Thea, Astron, Diane, Tryce, and the eight members of the Octagon. The mood was thick, suffocating.
"Two days ago, an encrypted transmission was sent from within Gaia HQ—using a closed frequency tied to a Synthesis Knight's identification. The signature was falsified, but the signal origin… came from within our own walls."
A hush fell. Then Harriet leaned forward, voice sharp.
"You're saying one of us leaked something?"
"Or someone impersonated one of us," Elaine added quietly. "Mirror Blades?"
"Possible," Thea said. "But unlikely. They can't perfectly copy our Divine Artifact bonds. This breach wasn't just a clone—it came from someone who knew Gaia's systems intimately."
Mia's eyes widened.
"What did they take?"
Astron answered this time, voice cold as winter.
"Battle logs. Coordination data. And the full reports of the Rift missions, including Hikari's blood resonance records."
A chill passed through the Octagon.
Hikari's hands tightened around her teacup.
"So they know."
Cyg stared at the red dot pulsing on the map. His expression unreadable.
"Then this isn't just infiltration. This is targeting."
Location: Gaia HQ – Archives Division
Later that night, Sylvia and Cyg investigated the Archive Wing, where the security systems had been manipulated.
A thin line of scorch marks trailed along the glass walls—evidence of someone using heat-based redirection to fry Gaia's cameras without drawing attention.
"Whoever did this was careful," Sylvia muttered, kneeling. "No etheric trace. Not even residual echo."
"Only someone who knew how to mask their signature completely," Cyg said, scanning the wall with Aetheron's internal sensors. "This wasn't just theft. This was a message."
He touched a part of the wall where a black rune pulsed faintly—one not part of Gaia's security matrix.
"See this?" he said, voice low. "It's Orion code. But not just anyone's. This rune belongs to Kael Verdan."
Sylvia's eyes narrowed.
"Catalyst Sovereign."
"And if he's moving," Cyg said, "Orion is done playing defense."
Location: Unknown – Void Surveillance Post (Orion Outpost)
In the shadows of another world, Erebus watched the data unfold in a thousand shards of suspended glass.
Beside him stood Kael Verdan, arms folded, his violet cloak flowing like fluid mist. His Artifact—Glassbane, a fractal blade—pulsed with active memory.
"The blood one is unstable," Kael said. "You were right."
"They all are," Erebus replied, voice deeper than void. "That's what makes them perfect for breaking."
Kael chuckled.
"I'll begin my move."
"No," Erebus said, raising one finger. "Let them stew in suspicion first. Paranoia is more corrosive than any blade."
Behind them, screens showed still images of every Octagon member—their profiles flashing with red outlines. Next to them, small notes.
Cyg: Strategist. Controlled. But already cracked.Mia: Faithful. Emotional tether. Protects Hikari.Sylvia: Intuitive. Musical distortion. Possible empathic weakness.Harriet: Temperamental. Distracts herself with bravado.Elaine: Wind-tied. Trusts too easily.Charlotte: Smart. Too smart. Must be destabilized.Eun-Ha: Dangerous. Avoid provoking. Divine aura detection too strong.Hikari: Anchor point. Fractured soul. Primary target.
Erebus looked at Hikari's file the longest.
"Soon," he whispered. "The scythe will swing again."
Location: Gaia HQ – Rooftop Garden
Later that evening, Hikari stood alone, watching the stars. Her mind echoed with everything she had heard—about the stolen records, about her being the central leak.
"So I'm the risk," she murmured.
Charlotte approached, uncharacteristically quiet. No bouncing words or offbeat comments. Just quiet understanding.
"You're not the problem," she said.
"But I'm the reason they're hunting us."
Charlotte leaned against the railing, the moonlight catching her glasses.
"Then make them regret it."
Hikari looked at her.
"What if I lose control again?"
Charlotte smiled faintly.
"Then we'll stop you. And hug you. And scold you. And stay."
She held out a tiny music box—crafted by Sylvia, tuned by Charlotte herself. It played a gentle lullaby.
"To remind you that you're not alone."
Hikari clutched it tight.
Location: Gaia HQ – Dawn Meeting
Cyg stood before the Octagon the next morning. His coat flared slightly as the wind blew through the terrace.
"The breach was deliberate. Personal. We're not just targets. We're test subjects."
He looked at each of them.
"No one here is the traitor. But someone in Gaia is. And we're going to find them."
Sylvia's eyes narrowed.
"And what then?"
"Then we do what we do best," Cyg said coldly. "We fight back."
Thea entered, her eyes grim.
"The Council of Gaia is moving. And so is Orion."
She looked directly at Hikari.
"Be ready. Because the next battle… is one you'll have to win within."
