Gaia Chronicles: The Integral Saga

Chapter 56: The Haunting Past

Location: Gaia HQ – Synthesis Sector 4, Isolation Wing

The stillness of midnight in Gaia's inner sanctum was not silent—it breathed. Walls hummed faintly with etheric pulses, like a heartbeat in the walls of the world. Inside a softly lit chamber, Hikari Synthesis 26 sat on the edge of a glass bench, her hands trembling over a cracked teacup.

Outside her window, moonlight painted the training yard silver. But in her eyes, it was red.

"I can still feel it," she whispered. "That night…"

Sylvia stood a short distance away, arms crossed, her back against the wall. She had come to check on Hikari—not just as a Knight, but as a friend.

"You controlled it," Sylvia said gently. "You didn't lose yourself."

Hikari looked up, her expression fragile.

"But I almost did."

A flash came unbidden to her mind—of blood tendrils writhing out from her skin, of Mia's voice reaching into her darkness.

"If she hadn't grabbed me… if Mia hadn't pulled me back—"

"But she did," Sylvia cut in. "And you're here."

The door opened with a hiss. Eun-Ha Synthesis 15 entered, calm as ever, her staff Solmaria glowing faintly.

"Commander Thea has requested all Octagon Knights for private evaluation," Eun-Ha said. "We're to undergo personal trials over the next ten days."

Hikari swallowed.

"Trials?"

"Memory trials," Eun-Ha confirmed. "We each face our past… through the Scars of Reflection."

Location: Gaia HQ – Command Chamber

Thea Synthesis 0 stood before the Octagon. Her presence was regal as ever—silver-white hair tied back, Caliburnus hanging at her side like a beacon.

"You've survived the first three missions. And already, Orion is escalating. We must become more than Knights—we must become unbreakable."

Her gaze swept over Cyg, Mia, Sylvia, Elaine, Charlotte, Eun-Ha, Harriet, and Hikari.

"The Trial of Shadows is not a test of strength, but of soul."

"Each of you will be placed in Etheric Isolation," added Irene Synthesis 3, standing beside Thea. "Your Divine Artifact will unlock a sealed memory—one you've buried. You must conquer it. Or it will consume you."

Charlotte raised her hand hesitantly.

"Uh. Does this have anything to do with… that creepy door in Sector Eleven?"

Thea's lips curved faintly.

"Yes."

Harriet let out a sigh.

"Great. Mind mazes. My favorite."

Location: Trial Chamber – Day 1

Each Knight was sent alone into the sealed vaults of Gaia's old Cathedral—a forgotten sector where the original 100 Divine Artifacts were once stored, long before Gaia's full formation.

The halls were hollow, the walls etched with runes, and in the center of each room: a mirror. Ancient. Living.

Cyg was the first to enter.

As the doors closed behind him, his reflection didn't mimic his movements.

Instead, it spoke.

"Strategist. Commander. Machine. Is that what you've become, Cyg?"

His own voice—emotionless, mechanical.

"You sealed your emotions after her death. You remember her, don't you?"

The mirror shimmered. A young girl appeared—long gone from his life. A name unspoken for years.

"Stop," Cyg said. "That memory isn't relevant to the mission."

"But it is the mission," the mirror hissed. "Until you accept who you were… you'll never know who you are."

Location: Trial Chamber – Day 2

Mia's room glowed with warm light—but beneath the surface, trembled with pressure.

Her mirror showed her as a child, alone in the ruins of the Grand Library, creation glyphs spinning madly above her head.

"You tried to recreate your family," the mirror whispered.

Mia flinched.

"I… I was only a child…"

"You wanted to make them smile again. You wanted to bring back life. But creation has limits."

A faceless shadow loomed in the mirror—her first failed attempt at divine glyph recreation, the one that almost destroyed her mind.

Mia gripped Lexigra tightly.

"I'm not that girl anymore."

The glyphs on her grimoire shimmered in response.

"Then prove it."

Location: Trial Chamber – Day 3

Hikari stood before her mirror last.

The others had faced pain, regret, loss—but Hikari's trial was different.

Her mirror didn't show a memory.

It showed a possibility.

A future where she had completely lost herself—where Sanguira had fully devoured her spirit, and she stood atop a throne of blood, her eyes empty, her wings blackened.

"This is your fate," the voice whispered. "The Vampire's Vessel cannot be controlled. You will destroy them all."

Tears fell silently.

"No," Hikari said. "That's not me."

"Not yet."

The scythe pulsed in her hand. But this time, her grip did not falter.

She turned away from the mirror.

"I won't become that monster. No matter what."

And as she did, Sanguira glowed not in red… but in pale silver.

For the first time.

Location: Gaia HQ – Ten Days Later

The Octagon reconvened in silence.

Some faces pale. Some eyes darker. Others seemed lighter—as if a burden had lifted.

Elaine smiled faintly, brushing hair from her face.

"Well… I guess I passed."

Harriet stretched, bruised and sweating.

"I punched my trauma. Not recommended, but effective."

Cyg's tone was as cold as ever—but he nodded at Hikari.

Sylvia stepped closer to Mia, placing a hand on her shoulder.

"You okay?"

Mia gave a soft smile.

"I remembered why I fight."

Thea looked at them, pride flickering in her eyes.

"You faced your shadows. The Abyss will come again. But now—you are ready."
