Gaia Chronicles: The Integral Saga

Chapter 59: The Council Moves

Location: Gaia HQ – Inner Spire, Hall of Deliberation

Thea stood before the circular chamber carved of crystal and blacksteel, her presence as commanding as the sword at her back. The other seven members of the Octagram, Gaia's ruling council, sat in shadowed alcoves like silent judges. In the center stood the Octagon, surrounded by a thin etheric barrier—a sign that this was no ordinary briefing.

"You summoned us like criminals," Harriet growled, eyes darting toward the ceiling's shimmering glyphs. "What the hell is this?"

Thea's voice remained firm.

"Protocol. After the breach and the Ilyssan Rift, there must be transparency."

Cyg stood still, eyes locked with Thea's.

"Transparency… or suspicion?"

One of the councilmen leaned forward—Argus Veln, General of Gaia's eastern fleet. Cold eyes and colder logic.

"Three events tied to your team. One breach, one Abyssal emergence, one corrupted memory echo."

"Coincidence?" asked another, Lady Virel, the High Sage. "Or orchestration?"

Elaine stepped forward, her voice steady despite the tension.

"I killed my own mother to protect Gaia. Do you really think I would conspire with the things that took her?"

Virel said nothing, but her expression softened ever so slightly.

Thea raised a hand.

"There is no formal charge. But you are being watched—by necessity."

Hikari's head lowered.Harriet scoffed.Mia fidgeted.Cyg's eyes narrowed to a calculating gleam.

Location: Gaia HQ – Interrogation Wing, Sub-Chamber 03

Despite Thea's assurance, one of them was taken for private questioning.

Sylvia.

She sat alone under a harsh white light, her earrings—Orisha—confiscated for security.

"You've had contact with Abyssal frequencies before," said the voice of the interrogator. "Your Artifact uses harmonic resonance. It could be manipulated."

"Only by me," Sylvia replied sharply. "And I'm not in the habit of singing lullabies to monsters."

"Then explain this." A screen flickered to life, showing a soundwave signature from the Ilyssan Rift. A second signature overlapped with it… matching Sylvia's etheric tone.

Her jaw tightened.

"...I didn't generate that."

"Then who did?"

Sylvia leaned back.

"Either you're accusing me, or you're admitting the Abyss is evolving. Pick one. I'm not going to sit here and be your scapegoat."

The interrogator paused. The lights dimmed.

"You're free to go. For now."

As she stepped out into the corridor, she found Cyg waiting for her, hands in his pockets.

"So... how'd the opera go?"

Sylvia gave him a faint smile.

"Five stars. No encore."

They walked away in silence.

Location: Octagon Quarters – Hikari's Room

Hikari curled in the corner of her bed, the lullaby box Charlotte gave her playing faintly beside her. She hadn't spoken since the Council hearing. The shadows in her room pulsed softly—Sanguira's influence creeping like ink.

A knock. Then another.

"Hikari?" Mia's voice.

No answer.

The door opened, and Mia stepped in, quietly kneeling beside her.

"I know they're wrong," Mia said. "You're not dangerous."

"But I am," Hikari whispered.

"So what?" Mia's voice was gentle. "So is fire. So is wind. So is hope. Power doesn't mean isolation."

Hikari turned to her, tears clinging to her lashes.

"You're the only one who believes that."

Mia shook her head.

"You'd be surprised."

She reached into her grimoire and handed Hikari a page. A drawing—eight figures in a circle, smiling. All drawn by Mia's hand.

"We're not eight pieces anymore, Hikari. We're one."

Location: Gaia HQ – Training Deck Zero

Harriet and Charlotte clashed in a training match. Sparks danced as Vermithar's wings collided with Kyrosyn's rotating blades.

"What's your problem?" Charlotte huffed. "You're swinging like the Council said we're enemies!"

"Maybe they're right!" Harriet yelled, spinning mid-air. "Maybe one of us really is a traitor!"

"Do you believe that?"

Harriet stopped.

"...No. But they made me doubt. And that's almost worse."

Charlotte deactivated her Artifact, breathing hard.

"Then fight that, not me."

The two stared at each other before Harriet collapsed onto the floor with a sigh.

"This sucks."

"You're telling me."

Location: Gaia HQ – Thea's Office

That night, Thea stood overlooking the citadel from her balcony.

Irene joined her, arms folded.

"They're fracturing."

Thea nodded. "The Council sees cracks and assumes betrayal. But the Octagon's strength is in how they hold each other when things fall apart."

"And if one of them is the crack?"

Thea's eyes narrowed.

"Then I'll break before I let the others be shattered."

Location: Orion Facility – Observation Ring

Kael Verdan stood before a simulation sphere, watching Gaia's interrogation footage.

"Thea is protecting them too tightly."

Erebus' voice echoed from the void behind him.

"Let her. Her love will be their leash."

Kael turned.

"Shall we press further?"

"Not yet. Let them dance with shadows longer. The next strike… will come from inside."
