Chapter 251: The Predator’s Smile

Citadel – South Wing
They had barely caught their breath.
Wang Han was the first to voice it, his axe resting on his shoulder, flames guttering low."That wasn't her true strength."
Sylvia didn't answer—she was still feeling the aftershocks of Marta's illusions. How those reflections had whispered every failure she'd tried to bury. Even now, her chest felt hollow.
Cyg's gaze swept across their circle. Each Integral Knight had new cracks in their composure—Elaine's usual brightness was dimmed, Harriet's defiance tempered by worry, Charlotte's hands trembled ever so slightly.
They had won—but only just.
And the Mirror Blades were not done with them.

Elsewhere – A Rift Balcony
High above the Citadel, Marta Sirova emerged from a seam of darkness, clutching her side where Aetheron's shot had struck true.A lone figure awaited her—tall, robed in layered black, face hidden beneath a hood edged in silver glyphs.
Erebus.
Even Marta felt the air thin when he inclined his head."Your experiment?"
She wiped a trail of blood from her lips and managed a soft laugh."Promising," she murmured. "I wanted to know if the boy could fracture my illusions. He did. With help."
"And?"
Her smile was slow, feline."He is everything the rumors said—and more. You were right to watch him."
Erebus didn't reply. Instead, he lifted a gloved hand, obsidian fingers flexing as though tasting the currents of conflict below."One day soon," he said softly, "he will stand before me. And then he will have to choose—power or ruin."
Marta tilted her head, curious."Do you think he will choose power?"
A pause."I think," Erebus said, "that he will be forced to."
And then he vanished—like a phantom dissipating into the dawn.
Marta's gaze drifted back to the Citadel."Not yet," she whispered. "But soon."

Citadel – Inner Halls
"Move."Thea's voice snapped them all from their thoughts. She raised Caliburnus and pointed it forward."They will not wait for us to recover. Every heartbeat we lose—another Mirror Blade stalks these corridors."
Mia swallowed. Her throat still felt raw, but she nodded, lifting Lexigra."I'm ready."
Harriet shot her a sideways look, some of her usual fire returning."You sure? You look like you're about to pass out."
"I'm sure," Mia said, more firmly.
Sylvia drew in a breath, forcing the tremor out of her hands."…Cyg," she began, voice lower, "before we go…what she said—about you—"
He turned his head, meeting her eyes directly. It startled her more than any blade.
"What about it?" he asked.
"She said you were dangerous," Sylvia murmured, her heart kicking against her ribs. "I don't believe that. Not the way she meant it."
His expression didn't change—but a muscle in his jaw flexed."…You don't know everything about me," he said at last.
"No," she agreed. "But I know enough."
Elaine came to her side, her hair stirring with wind she didn't consciously summon."And we all chose to stand here anyway," she added softly.
For a moment, he looked like he might reply. But then the floor quaked—a distant detonation echoing through the walls—and the moment slipped away.

Hall of Crystal Thrones
The chamber yawned ahead, wide and cold.
It was called the Hall of Crystal Thrones—once a ceremonial place where treaties had been signed. Now, it was defiled by Mirror Blades and their master.
A figure waited in the center of the dais, lounging against one of the broken seats as if it were a throne of her own making.
The Predator.
She was no mere assassin. Unlike the others, she didn't wear a perfect copy of a Knight's face. Instead, she had none—only a mask carved from onyx glass, featureless except for a smile etched across it.
Elaine exhaled shakily."…I hate that one."
The Predator inclined her head, as if graciously accepting the loathing."You've come far," she said, her voice drifting like smoke. "Farther than most."
Her gaze settled on Cyg."But you should have stayed behind your plans, little Strategist."
Cyg didn't flinch."That would have been easier," he admitted.
"Easier," she echoed, "but you came anyway. For them?"
He said nothing. But beside him, Charlotte took a single step forward, chakram spinning with a whirr of precision gears."We don't have time for your riddles," she snapped. "Either fight us or get out of the way."
A chuckle."Oh, I will fight you," the Predator purred. "All of you. But first—"
She lifted one gloved hand. The mirrors lining the walls erupted in a cascade of copies—dozens of distorted reflections, each carrying elements of the Knights' faces but fused with monstrous shapes.
"—let me show you what you look like…when you break."

The First Clashes
Julius was the first to hurl himself into the fray, lightning wreathing both blades."Don't let them surround us!"
Wang Han followed with a roar, Dravok ablaze as he smashed aside two illusions.Elaine darted upward in a vortex of wind, clearing space for Charlotte to fire a clockwork barrage.
Harriet landed beside Cyg, her voice low but fierce."…Just so you know, if you ever call this 'easy' again, I'll incinerate you."
He didn't look at her—but she thought she saw the ghost of a smile tug at the corner of his mouth."Duly noted."
Sylvia's song threaded through the chaos—half melody, half war cry. Her power resonated with every Knight's Divine Artifact, stabilizing them, anchoring them.
Mia, breathless but resolute, lifted Lexigra and summoned a wall of shining script to block a surge of blades."Hold fast!" she cried. "We end this—together!"

Elsewhere—Orion's Watch
Far above, on the fractured parapets of an abandoned watchtower, Erebus stood with Kael Verdan at his side.
"Interesting," Kael murmured, studying the battle through a floating disc of violet crystal."They adapt quickly."
Erebus said nothing, though his gaze lingered longest on Cyg—how he moved to shield Hikari, how he fired over Elaine's shoulder without needing to speak.
"Will you intervene?" Kael asked.
"No," Erebus replied, voice low. "Not yet."
He tilted his head."Let them believe they are winning," he murmured. "It will make the reckoning more complete."
Below, the hall rang with the clamor of steel and mirrored death.
