Citadel – Old Archives

The air thickened around them. Marta Sirova—Widowmaker—spread her hands, and the walls seemed to ripple, shedding layers of reality. A hush fell as the corridor's shape warped, elongated, became…something else.

Thea's voice rang out, cool and unwavering."Hold your focus. This is her domain—she'll use illusions to sever us from one another."

But even Thea's words felt distant, muffled by a pressure that crushed every heartbeat.

Sylvia raised her hand to her throat, Orisha vibrating against her skin. A flicker of terror: What if she couldn't find her voice? What if—

A gloved hand brushed her shoulder.Cyg.He didn't speak. Just looked into her eyes, his gaze steady, unblinking, and somehow—grounding.

Her lungs filled again. The fear receded, just enough for her to draw breath.

The floor beneath them cracked like an eggshell. A thousand mirrored shards erupted, each reflecting not reality—but memories.

Sylvia's childhood recitals.Elaine's first faltering flights on Aetheris.Hikari curled alone in the medical ward, sobbing into her sleeves.Mia in the library, hugging her grimoire to her chest. And Cyg—face bloodied, a boy alone in the training hall.

Every reflection whispered in their voices.

"Look how you failed.""Look what you lost.""You can't save them.""You can't love him."

Mia stumbled, her hands clapped over her ears."Make it stop—please—"

Charlotte whirled, golden hair whipping around her shoulders. Her chakram blazed in her grip, gears sparking to life."They're lies!" she shouted. "You hear me? Lies!"

Her voice cracked—but her conviction didn't.

A Shattered Circle

The Mirror Blades rose from the splintered floor—perfect, hateful copies of the Integral Knights. Some wore their faces twisted in cruelty. Others wept as they raised their weapons.

Astron met his own doppelganger in utter silence. No banter, no hesitation—just a blur of shadows and steel as Umbrix struck.

Irene floated above the chaos, Velqor's chains unspooling in gleaming arcs to bind two mirror copies that dared approach Charlotte.

Wang Han surged forward, axe ablaze, cleaving a path toward Mia's side. The fire roared in sympathy with his voice:"You are not alone!"

His hand closed around Mia's trembling shoulder. Flames raced up her arm—not burning, but warming, steadying.

Mia's breath stuttered."…Thank you," she whispered.

Behind them, Harriet clashed with a mirror version of herself. Flame met flame, each burst throwing embers across the hall. For an instant she faltered—staring into her own eyes, twisted with mocking rage.

But then she heard Sylvia's song rising, soft and defiant, weaving around them like a shield."Harriet," Sylvia called, "remember the promise you made—to fight, even when you're afraid!"

Harriet's jaw tightened."Right."Her wings ignited, a corona of molten feathers."I promised him."

She leapt—and the illusion burned away.

Marta's Lament

At the heart of the maelstrom, Marta watched it all with her cold, unreadable smile."Fascinating," she murmured. "This is the power of sentiment. Of…love."

Her eyes met Cyg's across the shattered floor."Will you claim it, little tactician?" she asked. "Or does it terrify you, what you feel for them?"

Cyg did not answer. But he stepped forward, one measured stride, Aetheron crackling in his hand.

Marta inclined her head, intrigued."Show me, then."

Waltz of Powers

Elaine was the first to move, her rapier spinning in a helix of emerald wind that struck two Mirror Blades from the air."Don't let her words bind you!" she called. "Remember—what we've built—what we'll protect!"

Charlotte landed beside her, Kyrosyn's teeth gleaming."And who we love," she added, softer.

Sylvia's voice rose to a new crescendo—notes laced with defiance, memory, longing. The illusions quaked as Orisha's power shattered their cohesion.

Hikari lifted her scythe, the crimson arc of Sanguira blazing through two illusions that reached for Cyg.Her voice—thin but clear—found him in the tumult:"You're not alone."

Cyg's gaze flicked to her. Just a fraction of a second—but enough.

He pivoted—dodging Marta's first strike—and in that moment, his mind was clearer than ever.

Not alone.

Never alone.

The Breaking Point

Marta advanced with dreamlike grace, each step scattering frost."You think you can kill me here?" she asked. "In my domain?"

"No," Thea called, her voice iron. She strode to Cyg's side, Caliburnus blazing with etheric light."But together, we will break it."

They struck in unison—Caliburnus cleaving the illusions' anchors, Aetheron firing a charged round that struck Marta square in the chest. She staggered, lips parting in a startled hiss.

All around them, the mirrored memories began to fracture—shards falling like silver rain.

Sylvia's song rose to fill the collapsing chamber. Mia's creation magic wove stabilizing lattices. Elaine's wind carried Harriet's fire.

In the last heartbeat before the illusion imploded, Marta's cold gaze met Cyg's.

"You are dangerous," she said softly. "More dangerous than you know."

Then she dissolved in a cascade of black threads.

Aftermath

The corridor reformed in a rush of displaced air. Rubble and frost gave way to clean stone. Silence returned—deep, almost unreal.

Sylvia leaned against a pillar, chest heaving, sweat plastering hair to her face."…Did we win?"

Cyg holstered Aetheron, scanning the shadows."For now."

He turned—almost instinctively—to Mia, to Hikari, to Sylvia.

Mia stepped forward, her hand lifting as if to touch his arm—then stopping, hovering there."…Thank you," she whispered.

For the first time, Cyg didn't look away."…You did well."

It was not much. But it was more than he'd ever given.

Hikari smiled—small, radiant, unguarded.Harriet muttered, "About time," though her eyes were bright.

Charlotte exhaled, clutching her chakram to her chest as though it were her heart.
