Chapter 252: The Second Reflection

Hall of Crystal Thrones—Minutes Later
The echoes of battle were deafening.
Glass shards crunched beneath armored boots as the Knights advanced, formation tightening with every heartbeat. Yet for each illusion shattered, another rose—more grotesque than the last, their hollow faces wearing the same smiling mask.
Sylvia's breath came in ragged gasps as she let her resonance swell again. Her song pushed back the psychic assault, the Predator's laughter slithering around the edges of her mind.
Don't look too closely, she warned herself. Don't let it in.
Beside her, Charlotte adjusted her chakram's settings, gears clicking."Ready?" she whispered.
"Ready," Sylvia managed, though her throat ached.
Without waiting, Charlotte hurled her weapon into the mirror phalanx. It split into six fragments, each orbiting in a whirling dance of blades that cut through the illusions—momentarily clearing the way.
"Go!" Julius bellowed, surging forward with Wang Han close behind.
They crashed into the illusions with thunder and flame, but each kill felt hollow.
This is a delaying tactic, Cyg thought grimly. He watched the Predator standing calmly on the dais, as if all of this violence were nothing but an amuse-bouche.
He lifted Aetheron, fired a single shot.
The bullet passed straight through her.
A decoy.
At once, the illusions ceased fighting and stepped back, forming a corridor lined with mirrored bodies.
Mia's voice shook as she asked, "What is this?"
Elaine hovered above them, her wind stirring the fragments."…A message."
Cyg narrowed his eyes."No. An invitation."

Elsewhere – A Chamber of Infinite Reflections
The Predator's real form waited within a hidden sanctum—a place between the Citadel's walls and the Mirror Blade's domain.
All around her, crystalline surfaces showed a thousand copies of herself, each smile identical.
She traced one reflection with a gloved fingertip."Soon," she murmured, "I will know everything you fear, little Strategist."
One mirror rippled, showing an image of Cyg standing among his allies—expression impassive.
"Your heart is not as empty as you pretend."
Her hand passed over another pane. Charlotte's face appeared, then Mia's, then Sylvia's—each flickering between determination and something softer.
"You've already let them inside."
A soft click of her masked tongue."And that will be your undoing."

Citadel—Approach to the Hidden Hall
They advanced warily into the corridor of mirrors. Each step echoed with the sense that the walls were watching.
Harriet's flame flared along her wings."I hate this place," she muttered, voice raw.
"You hate every place," Elaine teased, though her tone was brittle.
"At least that's consistent," Wang Han offered grimly.
Cyg ignored their exchange, scanning for traps. Every surface reflected them, and he suspected every reflection was recording, cataloging, and analyzing.
He thought of what Marta had said in the Rift Balcony—that someday he would have to choose.
Power or ruin.
No, he thought. There's always another option. Always.
He paused as the corridor split into two paths—each lined with mirrored doorways.
Charlotte's brows knitted together."It's a fork. Two routes."
"They want to split us up," Aria observed quietly.
Sylvia swallowed."We can't separate—"
But Mia shook her head, Lexigra glowing faintly."No. We must. I can feel it—the real Predator is beyond these thresholds. One of them leads to her. The other is another illusion."
Elaine descended to Cyg's side, wind coiling protectively around her."You know what happens when we split up."
Cyg met her gaze, then glanced at the others.Charlotte. Sylvia. Mia. Harriet. Hikari, quiet and tense behind her scythe.
Slowly, he nodded."Then we don't split evenly."
Julius tilted his head."Meaning?"
"We leave a strike team," Cyg said. "And the rest hold this corridor to ensure no reinforcements close the trap behind us."
It was the same measured tone he always used—but the edges were softer, tempered by weeks of fighting together.
And maybe, just maybe, by everything he didn't say aloud.
Sylvia touched his sleeve gently."…Then take me with you," she whispered.
Charlotte stepped forward too, brows set in defiance."Me as well."
Harriet gave a reluctant snort."Like hell you're leaving me here to watch."
Elaine drew in a deep breath and finally nodded."I'll hold the defense," she said, voice calm. "Hikari, Mia, Julius, Wang Han—we'll lock this corridor down."
Mia's gaze found Cyg's. For just an instant, her expression was vulnerable."Be careful."
He inclined his head—no flourish, no drama, but something in the motion made her chest ache.
"Always," he said quietly.

Elsewhere – Orion's Watch
Far above the Citadel, Erebus stood again with Kael Verdan. This time, Nyxa Vell—Shadow herself—joined them, emerging from the gloom as if she'd always been there.
Kael inclined his head slightly."They have chosen to divide."
Nyxa's voice was like oil sliding across water."Predictable. But even predictable prey can surprise you."
Erebus did not look away from the corridor of mirrors."He is learning," he said. "How to trust. How to lead."
"And how to love," Nyxa added, her smile unseen.
Erebus didn't reply. But his silence said more than assent.
Kael's fingers drummed against his vambrace."When will you move?"
"When the final reflection shatters," Erebus said softly."Then—"He turned, and for an instant Kael glimpsed the abyss behind that hood."—we will end this masquerade."

Citadel—The Hidden Hall
The doors at the end of the forked hall swung open.
And the Predator waited—no longer lounging, no longer amused.Instead, she stood beneath an enormous mirrored dome, arms spread as if to embrace them.
"Welcome," she purred, her mask gleaming."Shall we see…who you truly are?"
The doors closed behind them with a final, echoing boom.
