Chapter 131: The Rising Wind
Location: Gaia HQ – Southern Tower Observatory
The sky was restless.
Clouds gathered over Gaia Headquarters in delicate waves, curling like whispers of some forgotten storm. Elaine stood alone in the Observatory, her fingers brushing the cool marble railing as her gaze fixed on the swirling patterns above.
It had been a week since her duel with Harriet, and since then, a strange feeling had begun to stir deep inside her—a calling, a sensation as if something ancient was murmuring her name on the wind.
She wasn't the same girl anymore.
Not the smiling mask. Not the naive spirit.
"Aetheris," she murmured, gripping her rapier. "There's something else inside you, isn't there?"
The weapon shimmered faintly, its hilt vibrating softly in response. A gust of wind swept through the open observatory windows, dancing around her in a gentle spiral, as if in agreement.
"You've always known," she whispered, her voice barely above the wind. "You've been waiting for me to catch up."
Behind her, light footsteps approached.
"Can't sleep either?" said Sylvia's voice, warm and light as music.
Elaine turned, smiling softly. "I haven't really slept since that duel."
Sylvia walked beside her, eyes on the horizon. "You're close to something. I can feel it in the air around you."
"I don't know what it is. But I think… I think I need to go outside the walls."
Sylvia raised a brow. "You mean Gaia HQ?"
Elaine nodded. "There's a place I keep dreaming about. A mountain peak, surrounded by sky. I think Aetheris wants me to go there."
"Sounds like a trial."
Elaine looked down. "I already passed mine… didn't I?"
"Maybe this one's for something deeper," Sylvia said. "Not Gaia's trial. Your own."
Location: Mt. Velvra – Outskirts of Gaia Territory
Two days later, Elaine stood before the jagged slopes of Mt. Velvra. The mountain loomed like an ancient sentinel, its peak hidden among clouds that shifted with unnatural rhythm.
She wore a windcloak over her Gaia uniform, and her eyes held a mixture of fear and conviction.
"This is where it's been calling me."
She stepped forward, each movement deliberate, the wind resisting her more the closer she got.
"It's testing me."
Lightning cracked overhead. A sudden whirlwind surged, slamming into her. Elaine was flung back, rolling across the grass.
"Aetheris!" she shouted, standing up as blood dripped from her lip.
The rapier pulsed in her hand, and she raised it high.
"You chose me. And I chose you. I'm not turning back."
The wind howled louder, a scream of resistance, of rage—and pain.
Elaine began walking forward again.
One step.
Another.
The wind clawed at her cloak, dragged at her limbs.
Still, she moved.
"You're not just a weapon. You're alive, aren't you?"
Silence. Then a distant chime, like a melody on the breeze.
Elaine reached a plateau. There, a circle of ancient windstones stood—markers of an old civilization, forgotten by even Gaia's archives.
In the center: an altar. Atop it, the phantom image of Aetheris's true form shimmered—longer, sleeker, glowing with pure white light.
A voice—clear, feminine, and ethereal—whispered:
"Do you seek truth, or just power?"
Elaine knelt, eyes soft. "I seek freedom. Not just for myself—but for everyone trapped by their fears. I want to fly… and bring others with me."
A pause.
Then, the wind softened.
Aetheris lifted itself from her grip and floated to the altar.
The rapier glowed brighter. Blades of wind surrounded it—shifting, merging—and then:
Aetheris transformed.
It became longer, more ornate, its core wrapped in silver windrunes. Wings of ether formed at its hilt, pulsing like feathers in motion.
Divine Assimilation Achieved – Aetheris: Sylphsong Form
Elaine caught it with reverence, and as her fingers closed around the new hilt, the wind erupted around her—not with violence, but with grace.
"Let's fly," she whispered.
And the skies obeyed.
Location: Gaia HQ – Garden Courtyard
Night fell by the time Elaine returned. Her cloak billowed behind her as she walked through the central path of the moonlit garden, her gaze calm and radiant.
There, waiting near the center fountain, was Cyg.
He looked at her for a moment, then at the new form of Aetheris.
"You found it."
Elaine nodded. "I had to go to the edge of the wind to do it."
Cyg tilted his head slightly. "And what did you find?"
She stepped closer. "Not strength. Not power. I found clarity."
Cyg's eyes softened. "It suits you."
Elaine stood still for a moment, then looked up at him.
"Will you walk with me?"
He nodded wordlessly.
And together, beneath the silver moon and drifting petals, they walked side by side through the garden, a breeze twining around their fingers like a silent promise.
Meanwhile – Orion's Northern Front Base
Miruis Nevan, Codename: Prideful Star, watched Elaine's footage through the mirror interface.
"So the little wind girl has awakened."
Fei Xun narrowed his gaze. "Sylphsong… We'll need a specialized countermeasure."
Marta Sirova smirked. "Let her fly high. The higher they soar, the louder they fall."
Erebus stepped forward, his voice a shadow.
"Prepare the storm. Let's see if joy can survive war."
