Chapter 130: Wings of Resolve
Location: Gaia HQ – East Practice Courtyard
It was morning when Elaine stood at the heart of the open arena, the sky above pale with first light. The wind stirred around her, gentle and curious. On the sidelines stood Sylvia, Harriet, Mia, and Charlotte, all watching quietly.
Elaine drew Aetheris from its sheath, the rapier catching the sun like a sliver of sky.
"I need to be sure," she whispered. "That I'm not just pretending again."
"Then show us," Sylvia called from the edge. "Let the wind speak your truth."
Without waiting for a cue, Harriet stepped onto the field and cracked her knuckles. "You want a test? I'll give you one."
Elaine blinked. "You?"
"Don't worry," Harriet smirked. "I won't fry you. Probably."
Sylvia laughed softly while Charlotte muttered, "This should be interesting…"
Mia floated slightly, her book humming with concern. "Just don't go too hard, please…"
Elaine raised her blade. "Let's fly, then."
Duel Begins
Harriet lunged first, her flames sparking behind her as she rushed forward with the speed of a comet. Elaine leapt to the side, her hair fluttering in tandem with the twisting breeze.
A blast of heat surged, but Elaine twisted her wrist—shoom!
Aetheris danced.
"Whoosh—slice!"
The wind slashed outward in a graceful arc, brushing the flames aside and knocking Harriet back half a step.
"You're faster," Harriet admitted. "And lighter than I remember."
Elaine grinned. "I'm not trying to burn bright anymore."
"Then what are you trying to do?"
Elaine's eyes gleamed. "I'm trying to fly free."
She spun in a circle, unleashing a tempestuous burst that lifted her upward, hovering with precision as the winds wrapped around her feet.
She wasn't mimicking joy.
She was the wind now—joyous or not, laughing or not, she had become what she once tried to reflect.
From above, she dove like a spear of air, dodging another fire blast, her rapier glowing with azure energy.
With a powerful twirl, she planted her feet and sliced forward—BOOM—a shockwave of wind pressure exploded outward, throwing Harriet onto her back with a grunt.
"Holy crap," Harriet wheezed, lying flat in a crater. "You're scary now."
"I'm not scared anymore," Elaine whispered, landing beside her. "That's the difference."
After the Match – Observation Steps
The others gathered around as Harriet sat up, coughing smoke but laughing.
"You win this one, Featherhead."
Charlotte grinned. "You've definitely leveled up."
"She's past the wall," Sylvia added. "She's not looking for validation now—she's flying."
Elaine breathed deeply, letting the wind drift around her shoulders.
"Thank you… all of you."
Mia stepped forward and handed her a ribbon of pale blue, gently tying it to the hilt of Aetheris.
"To remind you that joy doesn't always mean smiling. Sometimes, it just means… being real."
Elaine pulled her into a sudden hug, burying her face in Mia's shoulder.
"Thank you."
"T-Too tight—can't breathe—" Mia squeaked.
Later That Night – Wind Terrace Tower
Elaine stood on the balcony, wind flowing endlessly over her shoulders. Cyg arrived silently, arms crossed behind his back.
"You flew well today."
She smiled at him without turning. "I did."
"You've changed."
"Not really," she replied. "I just stopped pretending."
Cyg paused. "Are you scared of falling again?"
"Of course. But now, I'd rather fall than stay grounded forever."
She turned to him, eyes softer than before.
"Thank you. For not trying to fix me. Just for being there."
Cyg's gaze met hers for a quiet moment, then drifted to the stars.
"I don't fix people. I just… walk with them."
Elaine stepped closer. The breeze wrapped around both of them like a veil.
"Then walk with me a little longer."
A pause.
Then, a faint smile from Cyg.
"Always."
Meanwhile – Unknown Location, Orion Stronghold
Fei Xun tapped across an interdimensional console, frowning.
"Elaine Synthesis 7… potential threat level now elevated to Tier 3-A."
Marta Sirova leaned over his shoulder, her expression unreadable.
"Should we act?"
Fei Xun smiled faintly. "Not yet. The Wind Empress has just begun to remember who she is."
"We'll wait until she's flying highest."
Erebus' voice echoed behind them like a knife dragging across steel.
"So that when we clip her wings… the whole world hears her fall."
