Chapter 16: 16 and Bird
"Oh~"
The rooster, cloaked in feathers of alternating red and black, sported a crimson comb atop its head and a tail that fanned out like a grandiose fan, strutting about with a swaying gait, oblivious to its surroundings, majestic and imposing.
Fang Zhixing and Xigou exchanged glances.
"The old village chief's chicken!"
"Quite plump!"
The man and his dog, sharing an unspoken understanding, quickly scanned the vicinity.
"No one else around..."
Xigou listened intently and whispered.
Fang Zhixing quietly took hold of his bow and drew an arrow.
At that moment, the rooster turned its rump, presenting its back to him.
Whoosh!
The arrow shot forth!
The rooster's head drooped, and it fell to the ground, headfirst, like a tumbleweed; its claws kicked a few times in a frenzy, then it lay motionless.
The arrow had pierced through its eye, causing instant brain death; the rooster had no chance to let out even a single cry before it died.
Fang Zhixing quickly stowed his bow and arrow and stuffed the rooster into the old bamboo basket.
Then he scanned the surroundings once more, to ensure that no one was spying.
"Quick, let's go home and make braised chicken!"
Xigou was overjoyed, snot dripping as he babbled excitedly.
Fang Zhixing's head was burning with excitement, yet he remained exceptionally calm, and shook his head, "Don't rush, we better not eat the chicken in the village."
Xigou retorted, "What's there to fear, no one knows it was us."
Fang Zhixing replied seriously, "Once the old village chief discovers his rooster is missing, he'll suspect someone has stolen it to eat. He might even search every household. The smell of chicken blood is so strong, there are so many feathers, and the scent of roasted chicken is so overpowering, how can we cover it all up?"
Xigou was startled.
Thinking about it, even if Fang Zhixing disposed of the chicken blood and burned all the feathers, it was impossible to eliminate all the scent.
"What do you suggest we do?" Xigou inquired.
Fang Zhixing was silent for a moment, then mused, "Let's leave the village first and then decide."
Man and dog didn't go home but methodically left the village, moving farther and farther away.
Surrounded by the Funiu Mountain range, the terrain was rugged.
Living between mountains and forests meant more than just an abundance of mountains, trees, and rivers; it meant that there were also a great many caves.
Fang Zhixing and Xigou scaled a hill and quickly found a cave.
Luckily, this cave was dry and did not leak rainwater; it was full of dry branches and fallen leaves, likely blown in by the wind.
"Hm, this will do."
Fang Zhixing sprang into action, taking the rooster out of the old bamboo basket. He plucked its feathers, gutted it, and started roasting it over the fire.
While Fang Zhixing was busy, Xigou also kept himself occupied, patrolling the outside of the cave.
"Woof woof!"
Before long, Fang Zhixing heard a bark and immediately grabbed his bow and arrows and ran out.
Upon closer inspection, Xigou was standing in front of some low-growing plants, wagging its tail.
Fang Zhixing hurried over and asked, "What's up?"
Xigou turned back, tongue out, as if to take credit, "Look, are these wild peppers?"
Fang Zhixing's spirits lifted; he bent down for a closer look and saw a plant brimming with lush greenery and a touch of red.
Amid the green leaves grew a red fruit shaped like fingers, with both the stalk and the fruit standing erect; the fruits were small and conical in shape.
"Yes, indeed, they're 'Facing Heaven' peppers."
Fang Zhixing was overjoyed; he loved spicy food to the extent that even if he suffered from hemorrhoids, he would still crave the heat.
He quickly gathered a handful of the peppers, brought them back to the cave, and crushed them on a stone to make chili sauce.
As time ticked away, it was nearly noon.
The rooster was slowly roasted to perfection, its skin turning golden brown and oily. The mouthwatering aroma of the meat filled the cave and wafted outside, filling the air with tantalizing smells.
Xigou, standing guard outside, said anxiously, "Are you done yet? You better not be eating all by yourself!"
Fang Zhixing tore off a chicken leg, calmly smeared a layer of chili sauce on it, and replied with composure, "What are you talking about? Am I that kind of person?"
He took a bite, and the flavor was a spicy and juicy explosion!
"Damn, that's awesome!"
Fang Zhixing devoured the chicken with gusto, like a whirlwind sweeping away the remnants, the feeling of satisfaction indescribable.
Just then, Xigou suddenly burst in, enraged, and yelled, "You bastard, I knew it!"
Fang Zhixing licked his lips and retorted, "Knew what? I didn't steal a bite..."
Before he could finish, Xigou furiously interjected, "Bullshit, you didn't steal a bite? Then who ate an entire chicken leg, a dog?"
Fang Zhixing defended himself righteously, "You don't know shit. I was just tasting it for you, checking if it was poisoned."
Xigou couldn't take it anymore, pouncing forward and shouting, "The other leg is mine, and so are the chicken wings!"
Without a word, Fang Zhixing tore off the chicken head and the neck, stuffed them into Xigou's mouth, and said earnestly, "The head and neck taste even better."
Xigou growled, his eyes blazing with fury.
However, the scent of meat and chili pepper in his mouth suddenly overwhelmed him, rendering him powerless to resist, like he was under a spell, he quickly bowed his head and started gnawing away, reveling in the deliciousness.
Seeing this, Fang Zhixing laughed heartily, "See, am I good to you or what?"
"Good my ass!" Xigou grumbled.
The two of them shared the large rooster, it was so meaty that their bellies became bloated, and they ate to the point of being stuffed.
"This is the first time I've eaten to fullness," Fang Zhixing lay down, stroking his belly, feeling completely content.
Xigou nodded and said, "The key is the spicy flavor, it's so satisfying, I even broke into a sweat."
Fang Zhixing touched his forehead, still feeling a bit feverish, and responded, "A little sweat is good, I hope it cures the cold."
Xigou lay down, looking at the heavy rain lashing outside, feeling a wave of sleepiness overtake him.
Fang Zhixing also closed his eyes gradually by the warm campfire.
...
...
"Dad, our chicken coop has collapsed from the rain!"
Zhao Dahu rushed over in a panic to tell his father that one large rooster and four hens had all disappeared from their coop.
"What?"
The village elder immediately became anxious. The hens laid eggs every day, provided his family with eggs to eat, which could not only hatch into chicks but could also be exchanged for grains. They couldn't afford to lose them.
The large rooster was also indispensable; without it, the eggs laid by the hens couldn't hatch into chicks.
In this year of famine, those five chickens were far too important, the loss was insurmountable.
"Quick, look for the chickens!"
The village elder issued the command, rallying the entire Zhao family, young and old, to search for the chickens.
Half an hour later, they found three hens.
But one rooster and one hen were still missing.
Zhao Dahu said gravely, "Dad, we've searched everywhere, inside and outside the village, no sign!"
The village elder's expression darkened, "Chickens don't just wander off to strange places; they must still be within the village."
Zhao Dahu's expression changed with shock, "Could someone have stolen our chickens?"
The village elder glanced at the sky, the rain had only just stopped, and night was falling.
He took out a copper gong and started striking it, dong dong dong.
Before long, all the villagers had gathered at the head of the village, including Fang Zhixing and Xigou, who had just returned from outside.
"Village elder, what's the matter?" Bai Erniang asked wearily.
The village elder looked around with a chilling gaze at every villager and said in a deep voice, "Someone has stolen chickens from my home!"
The villagers exchanged puzzled looks, with each of them checking the other out.
The village elder commanded, "Whoever stole them, step forward now! Don't make me find you; I will not be lenient."
No one came forward to confess.
Soon after, Zhao Dahu ran over with a handful of chicken feathers, came up to the village elder, and whispered a few words.
