Chapter 15: 15 Cold
He crept forward quietly, set the bow, aimed, and released!
Whoosh!
The bowstring trembled, and the arrow shot forth, the acceleration in that short distance created a lightning-fast effect.
"Croak~~"
The cry of a bullfrog suddenly changed, becoming piercingly shrill, unbearably agonizing.
The rest of the frogs were startled, jumping up and scattering in all directions.
Fang Zhixing's lips curled slightly, not knowing why, but the alertness of these bullfrogs seemed very low after the rain, allowing him to easily take advantage.
"Hit it!"
Xigou was poised to spring into action, bursting forth immediately.
But Fang Zhixing's complexion changed drastically as he transmitted his voice, "Danger, don't go!"
"Huh?!"
Xigou was startled, braking suddenly, his mouth hitting the ground, flipping over, and landing face-first.
Fang Zhixing's pupils contracted fiercely.
He saw a dark shadow leap down from the big tree by the shallow bank, opening its gaping maw in an attack, it snatched a bullfrog jumping midair with one bite.
The shadow, a python, was over three meters long and as thick as a water barrel, its body covered with interlocking black and white scales, dense and terrifying, with huge jaws and fearsome fangs.
Such a terrifying python!
An aerial attack, truly ferocious!
The python swallowed the bullfrog in one gulp, and with a flick of its tail in midair, knocked down two leaping frogs, stunning them on the ground before easily devouring them.
Next, the python noticed the bullfrog impaled on the ground by an arrow, bleeding profusely from the abdomen.
It paused briefly, then bit down on its head and pulled back.
Rip!
The bullfrog's abdomen was pierced by the arrow and torn in two, entering the python's stomach.
Too brutal!
Fang Zhixing and Xigou watched with their hearts pounding, both man and dog immediately curling up and retreating in hiding.
However, in the blink of an eye, the nearby bullfrogs had all fled, and the python turned its head, suddenly fixing its gaze on the tiptoeing Xigou.
"Damn it!"
Xigou's fur stood on end, he bolted in a mad dash.
The python lowered its head, crawling close to the ground like a sprinting cheetah, frighteningly fast.
"Shoot it!"
Xigou cried out in terror.
Without needing his call, Fang Zhixing had already turned back and released an arrow with a whoosh.
The arrow flew towards the python, hitting its back, and ricocheted off with a clang.
It was as if it had struck a metal shield.
"Didn't pierce?!"
Fang Zhixing's heart went cold, but his arrow had caused the python to turn sharply, lunging at the arrow that had flown away.
Fang Zhixing and Xigou rolled and scrambled, escaping for their lives.
"Huff, huff~~"
At the edge of the forest, man and dog lay in the mud, gasping for breath, too exhausted to even move a finger.
Before long, it began to rain again.
...
...
Night fell, and the rain poured down.
In the booming thunder, Fang Zhixing and Xigou struggled through the mud, braving the rain to return to Funiu Village.
Their steps were heavy, as if their legs were weighed down with lead.
Upon reaching the entrance of the village, they looked up!
The faces of the weary man and dog suddenly changed color.
They saw an elderly woman hanging from a tree at the village entrance, with disheveled hair, her clothes stripped off, covered with wounds, her death a ghastly sight.
"She's Old Lady Song!"
Fang Zhixing's eyes narrowed slightly, recognizing immediately, the handiwork of the old village chief.
Eaten out of house and home!
A man-eating beast that doesn't spit out bones!
The Song Family's grain and money must have all fallen into the hands of the old village chief.
Seeing this, Xigou said in a deep voice, "These days, good people don't live long, ah!"
Fang Zhixing didn't say a word, but went back home, immediately built a fire, and dried his soaking wet clothes to warm himself up a bit.
"Achoo!"
Xigou suddenly sneezed.
Just as Fang Zhixing was about to say something to him, he himself followed with a sneeze, with snot running all over.
"Gurgle gurgle gurgle~"
The stomachs of both man and dog started rumbling again, starving to the point of panic.
With no time to think, Fang Zhixing took out the bullfrog from the broken bamboo basket and sighed without a word, "After all the trouble for a whole day, this is all we got to eat."
He put it over the fire to roast.
Xigou got one frog leg, while the bigger portion naturally went to Fang Zhixing.
"It's too little, nowhere near enough."
Xigou said still unsatisfied, complaining.
Exhausted to death, Fang Zhixing didn't feel like talking, lay down on the bed, and fell asleep the moment his head hit the pillow.
When he woke up.
As Fang Zhixing opened his eyes, he suddenly felt a sore throat, as if someone was stabbing him in the trachea with a needle.
He tried to sit up but felt dizzy and his head was swollen, his whole body was aching, and when he touched his forehead, it was burning hot.
"Oh god, caught a cold and fever!"
Fang Zhixing inwardly cursed at the bad luck, got out of bed, walked to the water tank, ladled a bowl of cold water to drink, to ease the sore throat.
"Fang Zhixing, I feel so bad."
Suddenly, Xigou's groaning voice came.
Fang Zhixing looked down and saw Xigou lying listlessly at an angle, with a pool of vomit next to him.
"Are you sick too?"
Fang Zhixing's expression got even worse, and he said speechlessly, "You caught a cold and then infected me."
Xigou retorted disdainfully, "Nonsense, it's clear you got the cold and passed it to me!"
Fang Zhixing cursed moodily, "Damn canine flu!"
Xigou barked back, "You human flu, you human flu!"
"Enough, so much talk!" Fang Zhixing, feeling irritable, pushed the door open with dissatisfaction. Outside, it was still drizzling, and the whole yard was flooded.
The village was very quiet, not even a bird chirped.
After thinking for a bit, Fang Zhixing suddenly asked Xigou, "I've heard that if dogs get sick, they can find herbs to eat by themselves. Can you do that?"
Upon hearing this, Xigou got up, tilted his head, and asked in surprise, "Really? I have that skill?"
Fang Zhixing urged, "Hurry up and try."
Xigou immediately stepped out the door, with Fang Zhixing following behind, and the two of them entered the woods, searching for herbs everywhere they went.
Each time they came across a wild plant, Xigou would run over to sniff it.
In the meantime, Fang Zhixing picked some wild vegetables as well.
"Fang Zhixing, this grass!" Xigou suddenly began to shout.
Fang Zhixing went over to see, it was a kind of bright green wild grass with heart-shaped leaves, coarse on the upper surface with sparse, rough hairs, and densely covered with interwoven white wool on the bottom side.
"What kind of grass is this?"
Xigou didn't recognize the grass, but he felt that eating it would be beneficial to him.
Fang Zhixing did recognize it and replied, "It should be 'ramie', a kind of herbaceous plant with the functions of clearing heat, promoting diuresis, ensuring pregnancy, stopping bleeding, as well as detoxification."
Xigou realized and said thoughtfully, "I almost forgot, your mother once had a serious illness, she drank a lot of traditional medicine, all of which you brewed for her."
Fang Zhixing didn't want to talk about this topic. He picked around a dozen leaves and went home, boiled water for drinking, and ate some wild vegetables to stave off hunger.
Afterwards, taking advantage of the lighter rain, the two of them, sick as they were, took their hunting tools and went out to hunt.
No choice!
Not wanting to starve or succumb to illness meant they had to fight for survival.
The man and dog left their house, intending to leave the village, when suddenly, they saw a chicken walking past them.
