Chapter 75: Chapter 75: The Calm Before the Storm
The safe house was nestled deep in the countryside, far from the city's reach. A modest yet fortified cabin stood hidden behind towering trees, its walls thick with secrets and purpose. Claire pulled the car up the gravel path, killing the engine. The silence that followed was almost deafening.
Isabella exhaled slowly, stepping out into the crisp night air. They had made it for now.
Alexander joined her, his eyes scanning the dark horizon. "It won't take Langston long to track us here."
Claire and Damian exited the car, carrying the bags of supplies and equipment they had stashed for emergencies.
This was war. And they were deep in enemy territory.
Inside, the cabin was simple wooden floors, a single fireplace, and a round table in the center where they quickly spread out their maps and data.
Damian pulled out his laptop. "Langston's already moving. He's meeting with his biggest allies tomorrow night. If we hit them first, he loses everything."
Claire paced. "It's risky. We'll be outnumbered."
Isabella's eyes darkened. "We've been outnumbered since the beginning."
Alexander leaned forward. "We take out his resources, and he falls. No more second chances."
For a moment, silence settled over the room.
Then, Claire sighed. "Then we'd better make sure we win."
As the night stretched on, the group finalized their plan. But exhaustion crept in, the weight of everything pressing down.
Isabella found herself outside on the porch, staring up at the stars. She barely noticed Alexander until he was standing beside her.
"You should rest," he said.
She scoffed. "You too."
A smirk tugged at his lips. "I'll rest when Langston's gone."
For once, there was no tension, no walls between them. Just the quiet understanding of two people who had started as enemies but now stood side by side, ready to fight for something more.
Isabella glanced at him. "Tomorrow, everything changes."
Alexander met her gaze. "Then let's make sure it changes in our favor."
In the distance, the first traces of dawn began to break through the night.
The final battle was coming.
And this time, there was no turning back.
