Chapter 39: Believing in ‘Knock’ Studies
The next day, Lin Mo brought some fruit to the company.
With the continuous intake of honey water and poria throat lozenges, his overall complexion had improved.
It was just that the red mark on his forehead today was particularly noticeable.
Last night, he had almost shaken his brain loose in front of his computer, and it had to be done with sound—silent knocks didn’t count. What kind of madness was that!
Up to now, he still didn’t know how effective this so-called “Great Joy of the Machine Spirit” really was. They said it could reduce mechanical failure rates and increase success rates, but there was no precise figure for how much improvement it actually brought.
Still, adhering to the principle of “the more skills one has, the less burdened one is while walking the world,” he had chosen to sacrifice his forehead.
What a joke—he might not use it, but he could not afford to not know it!
While making tea in the office, Lin Mo was at ease. At half past nine, Liu Rushuang finally arrived. As soon as she entered, she smelled the fragrance of tea.
“No wonder so many bosses like to find a young secretary of the opposite sex. Walking in and having tea ready, and being pleasant to look at—it really is nice!”
At these words, Lin Mo looked up and found that today, the Great Empress Rushuang had changed her style again—today she was “wife edition Liu Rushuang.”
A white blouse paired with a black long skirt, just a simple black-and-white combination, but on her, it immediately became anything but ordinary.
The blouse was tucked into the skirt, giving a style of tight on top, loose on the bottom. It accentuated her figure, while her slender waist, easily encircled by a hand, was particularly eye-catching.
Her hair was simply pinned up at the back, giving a vision of gentle elegance.
“Morning, President Liu!” Lin Mo greeted.
Liu Rushuang nodded. In the company, it was fine for Lin Mo to address her this way. She then sat opposite him, accepted the tea he handed over, and took a light sip, her face showing satisfaction.
“Eh? What happened to your head?”
Just after setting down the cup, Liu Rushuang noticed his reddened forehead. It was hard not to—it was quite obvious.
“Uh… didn’t sleep well last night, knocked it against the headboard,” Lin Mo replied.
There was no way he would admit he had knocked his own head against his computer until it turned red. That would be far too embarrassing—people would think he wasn’t mentally stable.
“Does it still hurt?”
“It’s fine, I—”
Before he finished, Liu Rushuang stretched out a finger and tapped his forehead: “Ah, looks like you hit it quite hard. How about sister blows on it for you? Once I blow on it, it won’t hurt anymore, come on~”
As she spoke, her face slowly leaned closer.
Lin Mo: ⁄(⁄⁄•⁄ω⁄•⁄⁄)⁄
Here we go again. This woman, taking advantage of Miss Yuan not being around, was cranking up the intensity on him. Wasn’t this some kind of exam for cadres? What cadre could withstand such a test?
Seeing Liu Rushuang’s face draw closer and closer, Lin Mo executed a tactical lean-back: “I’m allergic to breath!”
Liu Rushuang: …
What a joke. He had finally gotten his external “plug-in.” Why would he want women? Women would only slow down his progress.
“Go on with you, sister’s breath is fresh! If you don’t believe me, smell it. Ah~~”
“President Liu, I can see your tonsils already!”
Liu Rushuang: “Ah~ cough cough…”
Women—especially beauties—were usually very conscious of their image. To casually let someone see her tonsils? How unbecoming! So she immediately closed her mouth.
Pretending to cough, Liu Rushuang quickly changed the subject: “Xiao Mo, today’s your last day of internship, isn’t it?”
“Mm. It’s been several months since I came to the company. At first I thought time passed slowly, but after a while, it actually felt kind of interesting,” Lin Mo said with a smile.
Today was the last day of being a corporate grunt, so of course he was happy. His whole demeanor radiated joy.
Looking back on these months of internship, he couldn’t help but sigh at how fast time had passed. Just like a middle-aged man—before it even started, it was already over.
“Alright, to celebrate your successful completion of your internship, come out with me this afternoon. Tonight I’ll treat you to dinner, and your cousin Susu will come too. There’s a surprise waiting! Sister doesn’t take advantage of people for free!
Don’t refuse—it’s settled!”
Without giving Lin Mo any chance to decline, the Great Empress Rushuang had already decided the matter. He could only nod, then spoke:
“President Liu, since that’s the case, if you’re not too busy, I’d like to go back to my original department for a visit. Some of them really helped me a lot. Since I’m leaving, I should go say goodbye.”
To this request, Liu Rushuang agreed without a second thought.
Lin Mo went to the department he had been in for months, handing out fruit to colleagues he had a good relationship with, thanking them for their care.
“Sister Li, where’s Brother Wang? Haven’t seen him.” Lin Mo asked, not having seen his mentor Old Wang.
“You mean Old Wang? He’s next door. I heard the system’s been malfunctioning for a while now.”
Hearing this, Lin Mo nodded and went next door. As soon as he pushed the door open, he saw a group of balding veteran programmers kneeling in a row, kowtowing to a computer—and among them was his mentor, Old Wang.
“Brother Wang, Brother Wang, what’s going on here?” Lin Mo asked curiously.
Old Wang turned his head, saw him, and quickly stood up: “What are you doing here?”
“Today’s my last day of internship. I came to tell you, and I also brought you some fruit. After all, Brother Wang, you’re my mentor, right?” Lin Mo said, lifting the bag in his hand.
At this, Old Wang’s eyes lit up. He snatched the fruit with one hand, grabbed Lin Mo’s collar with the other, and pulled him in: “Perfect timing. Since you’re here, these apples are just right for an offering. Come on, Xiao Lin, hurry up and knock one!”
Lin Mo: …
Kowtow to a computer again? Was this madness? Last night he had nearly vomited from it.
“Wait, Brother Wang, what’s going on? We can’t just start kowtowing out of nowhere, right?”
“No choice. The code we copied over just won’t run here. We’ve checked it line by line—absolutely no problem. This is the only way left. Don’t doubt it, I’ve tried. Sometimes it really works! This is the ultimate move passed down by generations of our predecessors—‘Great Joy of the Machine Spirit’!” Old Wang said solemnly, with great seriousness.
“‘Great Joy of the Machine Spirit’?” Lin Mo’s voice instantly rose several notches.
“You’ve heard of my story too?”
Lin Mo: “Uh…”
“Stop ‘uh’-ing. Come on, everyone move aside, let Xiao Lin do it.” Old Wang waved for the others to make room for the newcomer.
“But Brother Wang, you’ve already tried, haven’t you?”
“We all tried. You’re the only one left. You still have the newbie protection buff—it’ll definitely work!”
Lin Mo: “I…”
Before he could finish, the others pushed him to the computer. Looking around, he saw over a dozen men staring at him expectantly. In the end, Lin Mo chose to believe in ‘Knock’ studies.
After all, his forehead from last night wasn’t sacrificed for nothing.
Under everyone’s gaze, Lin Mo followed Old Wang’s instructions: lighting a cigarette, pouring a drink, and kowtowing—the holy trinity.
Finally, he stood up and gently tapped the Enter key. The next second—
The page, which had been unresponsive no matter who tried, miraculously began to run smoothly. In an instant, the entire department erupted into deafening cheers.
At that moment, in the eyes of the others, Lin Mo was like a demon-subduing lord descended from heaven, truly a divine force on earth.
