Ch. 40
Chapter 40: I Really Want to Improve
For a moment, all departments of the company heard the deafening cheer. Anyone who didn’t know might have thought it was a call to arms, as if heaven had perished and a new order must rise.
It made sense why the state didn’t allow a group of older young men to gather together. Even among those who already had families, someone could suddenly come up with a wild idea, let alone those with no ties or burdens.
The Machine Soul was overjoyed. He didn’t even know who invented this skill. He had thought that what he bought yesterday on the shopping page was a unique, abstract skill, but he hadn’t expected it to actually be a realistic one.
Just like his horsemanship, programming, and humanoid plug-in skills, in reality there was truly a group of people who had mastered it.
Of course, the results also made it clear that Old Wang and the others, with their half-baked learning, did not have a very high success rate.
It was absurd. In a place that prided itself the most on science, the final method they turned to was mysticism. What was this supposed to be? A scientific ritual?
On the other hand, Lin Mo, an intern on his very last day, had, after this battle, made a name for himself in the company.
For a long time afterward, legends of him would be passed around in the company’s programmer group.
“Congratulations! Don’t suddenly disappear, alright? Keep in touch when you can!”
“Of course. From now on, it’s just you and Sister Yuan in the company. Insider tip: hold on tight to Sister Yuan’s thigh!”
“Like you even need to say it. Besides, that’s my godmother!”
“Alright then, I’m off. Come find me at my school sometime!”
At one in the afternoon, at the company entrance, Lin Mo waved at Zhang Wei. Although it wasn’t as if they would never see each other again, since they no longer worked together, their contact would inevitably become less frequent.
Perhaps one day Zhang Wei would just be another name in his WeChat contacts, never again reaching out.
But then he thought, as long as Zhang Wei or Miss Yuan didn’t resign, their story shouldn’t be over just yet.
With that, Lin Mo waved his hand, carried a small cardboard box, and turned to leave.
He didn’t intentionally drag out the farewell, because he knew the ending wouldn’t change. This place didn’t belong to him. To him, many people in the company were nothing more than passing acquaintances — like Sister Li, like Brother Wang.
Carrying the box, walking out of the company, Lin Mo took a deep breath. He felt as if he had stepped into a new stage of life.
It also gave him a shallow glimpse into post-graduation life. Indeed, it was nowhere near as easy as school. No wonder high school teachers always stressed that compared to working later, studying in school was actually the easiest time.
But even so, he never regretted why he hadn’t worked harder back in high school. Because he knew, even if he were thrown back into high school, his studies wouldn’t have improved. After all, studying required talent too.
Just then, Liu Rushuang’s car stopped in front of him. The window lowered, revealing her delicate face as she said, “Get in! Sis will take you out for a spin.”
Hearing this, Lin Mo immediately sat in the passenger seat. This was his first time riding in Liu Rushuang’s car.
“Got all your stuff?”
“Right here.” Lin Mo patted the box in his hands and replied. Inside were some of his personal belongings and, most importantly, his internship certificate.
“Good. Let’s go then!”
With that, Liu Rushuang stepped on the gas, taking him straight to the clothing stores on the commercial street.
“Buying clothes? For me?” Inside the mall, Lin Mo finally understood the purpose of this trip, feeling a little surprised.
“Of course! Who dressed you in this? Your sense of fashion is terrible. You’re only getting by on your looks right now.
And this material is so cheap. What kind of taste is this? Garbage!
Right now, if the two of us walked down the street, anyone would think you’re just my lapdog, wanting to leech off me.
Enough, don’t argue. Su Su told me to give you a proper makeover today, so you’ll at least be worthy of me!”
Saying this, Liu Rushuang dragged him into a brand-name men’s store he didn’t even recognize.
Lin Mo: …
Stop scolding me, please stop scolding me!
For no reason, he was scolded thoroughly. Although he had bought his clothes himself, he had to admit that his fashion sense wasn’t great. In middle school and high school, he had even liked wearing skinny pants. Compared to then, he had already made great progress, okay!
Soon, Lin Mo became a merciless clothes-changing machine. However, it wasn’t like the cliché where Liu Rushuang would sweep her hand and buy everything. She might have money, but she clearly enjoyed the fun of shopping more.
And not only did she buy clothes for him, she also picked out a few things for herself along the way.
Very quickly, a strange pair appeared in the mall: a fair-skinned, beautiful, wealthy-looking older sister, accompanied by a young man who wasn’t very old but looked very handsome, shopping madly.
And it was always the woman paying at the cashier, while the man followed behind carrying the bags.
Just as Liu Rushuang entered a women’s store to pick out a dress for herself, Lin Mo, left in the so-called “husband waiting area,” encountered a middle-aged woman.
“Young man, how much is that woman in there paying you? I’ll give you double.
Don’t look at me as being older, money isn’t a problem at all. I just like your type.
If you keep me happy, I’ll even buy you an apartment. Think about it, alright?”
Lin Mo: Σ(⊙▽⊙“a
He raised his head to look at the woman before him — plump figure, heavy makeup that couldn’t hide her wrinkles. She was nearly his mother’s age.
And judging from her build, Lin Mo would have believed it if someone said she could eat Liu Rushuang whole.
“Auntie, I’m not—”
“Still pretending? I already saw it. She’s paying for all the clothes. I’ve seen plenty like you. When you’re ready, call me.” As she spoke, she shoved him a business card, even winking at him.
When the woman finally left, Lin Mo was still dazed and slightly nauseous, when he suddenly saw Liu Rushuang laughing so hard at the store entrance that she was clutching her stomach.
“Hey, don’t you have any sympathy? If you won’t help, fine, but why laugh at me?” Lin Mo quickly threw the business card away as if it carried some contagious disease.
Hearing this, Liu Rushuang only laughed harder. After quite a while, she finally walked over, patted his shoulder, and said between laughs, “I… I just didn’t want to ruin your chance to get rich, little brother, hahaha…
Well? Now do you see how good your big sister is? Don’t you think… eating off me doesn’t sound so bad?”
“I’m going to tell my cousin!”
“Alright, alright, I won’t say it anymore… I won’t… hahaha…”
Lin Mo: …
After this incident, the two quickly finished their shopping. Liu Rushuang had picked out two sets of clothes for him, while the rest were all for herself.
Back in the car, Lin Mo finally understood what it meant to be rich. A simple short-sleeved shirt cost several thousand, a coat over ten thousand. His views on consumption had been completely shaken.
Just this shopping trip had cost tens of thousands. He even felt like his cheap tea, costing only a dozen yuan, wasn’t worthy of being drunk while wearing these clothes.
“Let’s go. Sis will take you to get a massage, then we’ll meet your cousin for dinner and celebrate.”
As Liu Rushuang finished speaking, Lin Mo thought for a moment and turned on the music player.
‘Waiting~ as a few strokes fall, waiting~ as a few tunes are played, waiting~ to return to the old hometown, waiting for your name to be written on the golden list.’
‘On the inkstone, a few strokes fall~ ink stains with the cry of partridges~ who understands the meaning in the song~ broken strings wait for the night~’
Liu Rushuang: …
“What? Little brother, you don’t want to work hard anymore?”
Lin Mo shook his head. “Sister, I really want to improve!”
…
