Chapter 25: The Academy's Choice
Choosing the right academy was crucial.
Fang Ling thought long and hard, only to realize, he knew nothing.
Upon hearing about recommendation letters, he decided to head to the headmaster's office for advice.
The headmaster was a Soul Sect, surely someone who had returned from a larger place. His understanding of such matters was far beyond that of ordinary people.
He would definitely give the best guidance.
Knock knock. Fang Ling tapped on the office door.
"Come in," came the familiar voice from inside.
Fang Ling pushed open the door and walked in.
Because of his distinctive trait, a crippled leg, and as a top student graduating early, the headmaster remembered him.
"I recall your name... Fang Ling, Martial Soul is a scythe. What brings you here today?"
"Yes, I didn't expect you to remember me, Headmaster. I came today to ask if you could recommend an intermediate soul master academy."
Fang Ling got straight to the point.
The headmaster nodded in understanding, a faint smile appearing on his rugged face, clearly pleased with this gifted student.
Seeing Fang Ling still standing, he pointed at the chair, saying:
"Sit. Tell me your requirements. Intermediate academies vary greatly."
Fang Ling sat down and said:
"I need systematic instruction in weapon-type martial souls and combat training. Also, the academy should be located in a city, or near one, that has a major Soul Arena."
"Weapon martial soul training and combat instruction, plus proximity to a major Soul Arena... You like to fight?"
"Nothing else matters to you? Just so you know, several intermediate academies affiliated with Nuoding Academy are all eager to recruit top talents."
Fang Ling replied firmly, "These two requirements are non-negotiable. Nothing else matters."
"I see. Let me think." The headmaster stroked his beard.
There weren't many academies that met both requirements.
Typically, to ensure enough attendees and income, major Soul Arenas were built in large cities.
Big cities had more soul masters and wealthier populations.
These cities usually hosted advanced academies.
Intermediate academies in large cities did exist, but few also specialized in weapon martial soul training and combat instruction.
After a brief moment of thought, a light flickered in the headmaster's mind. He remembered a place: "War King Academy!"
He had come across it during his travels in the Heaven Dou Empire.
"It's in the Kingdom of Sylvis, near the border with the Balak and Haagen-Dazs Kingdoms. Located in Vic Icewind City, War King Intermediate Soul Master Academy has been around for twenty-five years."
"Vic Icewind City lies on the edge of a major urban area. It's known for its fierce and bold populace and has a large Soul Arena within the city."
"I heard the arena does great business."
"War King Academy places a heavy emphasis on combat training. I think it can meet your needs."
"But..." the headmaster hesitated.
"But what?" Fang Ling asked, puzzled.
The headmaster explained:
"Although it's within the Heaven Dou Empire, unlike schools in the same province that accept recommended students directly, in the Kingdom of Sylvis, applicants must pass a combat entrance exam."
"Many people take the test, and it's very difficult. Every year, a large number of candidates are eliminated."
"Is it hard? I'm not afraid of hard!" Fang Ling beamed with confidence.
With his mastery of scythe techniques and movement skills, how could he possibly fear combat?
In fact, difficulty was welcome.
The harder it was, the more students it eliminated each year, it only proved how good the academy was.
Only the best academies drew endless streams of applicants.
That so-called Shrek Academy, famous for producing monsters but lacking in almost everything else, was a rare exception. You'd be hard-pressed to find another like it in the soul master world.
"Then, Headmaster, about that recommendation letter?" Fang Ling looked at him with eager eyes.
One important reason for visiting the headmaster was to get that letter.
Maybe it would lower the difficulty of getting in.
Even if it didn't help much, it was better than going in without one.
"Anyone graduating early is a top student. I'll write it for you." The headmaster smiled, pulled out a sheet of paper from his drawer, and swiftly penned a few lines.
He sealed it in an envelope and handed it to Fang Ling, offering his blessing:
"I hope you become a powerful soul master in the future."
"Thank you, Headmaster. I wish you continued success in your cultivation as well."
Fang Ling bowed respectfully and left happily with the letter.
He folded it carefully and placed it together with the certificate he had received from the Angel Legion of the Martial Soul Hall.
He felt a deep sense of accomplishment.
The matter of the academy was nearly settled.
All that remained was to wrap up some loose ends, say farewell to those he could, and embark on a new journey.
In Dorm Seven, the atmosphere was warm and lively.
It was a farewell feast. The dishes were many and abundant.
Fang Ling had cooked a lot.
Everyone ate heartily, as if they wanted to fill their stomachs to the brim.
By the end, Xiao Wu lay on the bed, rubbing her round belly.
The other working students were no exception.
Tang San fared a bit better, but he was still overly full.
He asked Fang Ling:
"You're leaving?"
"Yes, I'm setting off soon."
Fang Ling was a bit sentimental.
His friendship with Tang San and Xiao Wu would likely end here.
Even if they remained on good terms for now, in the future, because of the Blue Silver Emperor's right leg bone, they were bound to turn against each other.
By then, they would meet as enemies.
Xiao Wu picked her teeth and asked, "Have you decided on an academy?"
"Yes, it's in the Kingdom of Sylvis, in Vic Icewind City. It's called War King Academy."
Fang Ling gave a brief introduction, then asked in surprise, "You're almost at level twenty. Why haven't you graduated yet?"
"We still need a few more years," Tang San replied calmly.
Fang Ling tried to persuade them: "You should consider graduating sooner."
"Primary academies are only transitional. You won't learn much here. With your innate full soul power, you shouldn't waste your talent."
"We have our own plans. You don't need to worry about us."
Tang San sneered inwardly.
His teacher was extraordinarily wise, what could someone with just innate level one possibly understand?
Fang Ling had said his piece and didn't push further. They could talk more next time they met.
He packed up, and before leaving, took one last look at Dorm Seven, where he had lived for three years.
"Tang San, Sister Xiao Wu, train hard. Don't let me surpass you!"
"Ha, you better work hard yourself," Xiao Wu said with a laugh, her stomach still aching from overeating.
Tang San couldn't help but chuckle, though his mind was full of questions. You, with innate level one, think you can surpass us with innate full soul power?
What wishful thinking.
The difference in innate talent was huge. Even though they got along, both Tang San and Xiao Wu thought the same.
"Just wait and see. I will catch up, and even surpass you!"
Fang Ling clenched his fist and left full of determination.
Xiao Wu and Tang San watched him go and, strangely, felt he looked a bit... towering. As if he might actually achieve it.
But how could that be?
With only innate level one, could he really defy fate?
Under his teacher's guidance, the more Tang San learned about the world, the more he understood the value of talent.
It was an unbridgeable gap between ordinary and genius soul masters.
Innate level one, for Fang Ling, the path of the soul master would be unimaginably difficult.
They probably wouldn't see him again.
This farewell was likely their final goodbye.
Xiao Wu, still gazing at Fang Ling's retreating figure, suddenly remembered something: "Brother San, you asked before, what exactly did your teacher tell you?"
Still brooding over the cruelty of fate, Tang San recalled, "When we reach the sixth grade."
"Then, he said, he'll recommend us to a very powerful academy of monsters."
"Monster academy?"
"He didn't say much more, only that it's a very formidable school."
