Chapter 908: The tournament of retribution Part 4

Uriel continued taking laps in the arena activating and deactivating his Dash skill to confound Wendy, though she didn't look like her human self anymore. With long limbs that could stretch from the center almost to the corner of the arena, skin so tight it stuck to her bones and odd protuberances on the head that started resembling antlers, she looked exactly what a wendigo was expected to look like.

More like a fight, it was now a chase with the so called hunter playing the role of the prey and while Sam enjoyed the show, he still approached the arena and placed himself in front of Uriel allowing himself to be caught by the starving cryptid.

With a grip so firm not even a holy rank hunter like Sam could release themselves from, Wendy grabbed Sam and pulled it towards her mouth. Just as she was about to bite him, Sam put a finger inside her mouth and allowed her to bite it off the maddening hunger to disappear in an instant as Sam's blood infused with but a drop of Water warlock's body was more than enough to sate her.

"Thank you." Said Wendy back to her human form as she lifted up her shirt to wipe her mouth as though it was a napkin, uncaring of the fact that she wore nothing beneath it at the time since artifacts were forbidden at the tournament and the orichalcum underarmor also counted as one.

"No, thank you." Sam said with a smirk as the finger he lost was a low price to pay for the show.

"Finally, I thought you were going back on your word." Uriel huffed.

The entire stadium was vacant of public and only some of those who worked there remained as even most of the hired security staff had left in a panic the moment the electronics went out. But this did not apply to the holy rank hunters since the very reason why they were summoned was to handle situations such as the one that took place right in front of them.

"What are you waiting for, contain the threat." Said Tina to Lily, but if she could understand her she didn't show.

"It is contained," Sam said as he hovered to the VIP room where Tina watched the event. "Uriel says that you should give him the promised artifacts right now."

"He did not win anything, his fight was interrupted, the entire event was interrupted hence nobody won." Tina scoffed without taking her eyes from Uriel who wiggled his fingers in a mocking 'hi' motion.

Tina refusing to hand over the prize was something Uriel saw coming from miles away, what he did not expect was that rather than fall to the pressure she would instead push forward and she hoped off to the arena.

"If you want a prize, then you need to kill that thing."

"She's not a threat to anyone, not anymore at least." Said Uriel with a slight nod at the wendigo.

"You guys are all hunters and a cryptid is right there, do your job and kill that thing." Tina shouted.

"Careful there, that 'thing' is sentient and can hear you damn well." Sam warned.

"Has everyone gone insane?" Tina asked taking a look at her surroundings, realizing that not just Uriel and Sam were near, but a myriad of hunters some of which she didn't recognize. But among them, there was one she knew all too well. "you too have fallen for this madness, husband?"

"So now I'm your husband, but anytime I need something from you I'm no one," Mark scoffed. "but no, it's not insanity and I think you should hear them out." Tina couldn't so much as utter a single word when Mark, the person who hated Uriel the most in the world and would have nightmares about him, asked her to hear him.

"Before I tell you this, I need you to answer some questions. To make sure you have an open mind," Uriel waited for Tina to nod before continuing. "what creature mimics its prey in distress to lure it in?"

"Cryptids, of course." Tina scoffed.

"What creature kills not just to consume, but just for the thrill?"

"Again, cryptids."

"And what creature is responsible for destroying the world?" Uriel asked, this time with a sharp gaze.

"Look, I don't know why does any of it matter, but we all know it's cryptids. Those vile creatures took over our world and brought our species to near extinction." Tina growled throwing away her calm facade.

"You're wrong on all accounts, it is humans. They tricked animals by imitating their calls, luring the poor things to traps or to be shot at. It is also humans who not just killed animals, but made of killing them an entire industry which should be fine if it was to sustain themselves. But humans, they did not consume just what they needed, they grossly overeat. Before the arrival, obesity was the top responsible for deaths. And about our world... I know you were never that good of a student, but you must at least know about pollution."

A pause for the lingering thoughts on the audience as most of those present had not thought about that until Uriel said it out loud made the moment even more dense. The Dungeon Raiders were up for whatever ride Uriel was going to take them, be it turning against Tina or joining he. Their loyalty came from a place of trust and love, but the fact that they were well paid, had good working conditions and had a survival rate of almost 100% also played a huge role in it, but the same did not apply to the other hunters some of which belonged to other teams.

"Look, if you're not going to kill it because it's sentient I got news to you. That thing has a flux orb inside and they're the base of our economy. Without flux orbs, even if we had the means to generate electricity with power plants, which we don't, we still lack the infrastructure to relay that electricity." One of them said.

"That's it, we need its orb." Another hunter added with a joyful mood as he gained confidence.

"Then take it, no one's stopping you," Uriel glared at the man who spoke last, then continued after no one moved or said anything. "that's what I thought. You're all in for sharing a prize you can not collect on your own. That's why I wanted to kill you all." Uriel said with a sigh.

"Excuse me?" Tina asked as if she didn't hear him.

"It's the hypocrisy, I can't stand it. They let anyone join the tournament, then point fingers at me for defeating them."

"That's because you hit women!" Tina accused.

"Women who signed up for the tournament." Medusa scoffed.

"He also touched my wife in front of everyone! That is just too wicked."

"Says the man who used his wife as a weapon. Look, we can sit here and debate morality all you want, but it's pointless. I don't need it anymore. Besides, this megacity is going to fall anyway." Uriel shrugged.

"So, you were planning to become a holy rank hunter by massacring thousands of people and we are supposed to what... just let it go?" Tina pointed a finger to Uriel and commanded the holy rank hunters to make a move, but no one moved.

"I am sorry, Miss governor, but I am afraid Mister Sage has a point." Mister Scofield said to which Jon added.

"No harm, no foul, right?"

"You... you bunch of backstabbing... you... just now that I had everything I wanted..." Tina sobbed, yet no one present felt like comforting her. Instead, Medusa picked her up from the ground and slapped her with the strength of a heavenly rank huntress.

"Get a grip! Didn't you hear what he just said about this city? Everyone is in danger and you need to do your damned job!" Medusa said.

"What is it you want me to do!?" Tina cried, yet Medusa carried on slapping her just for good measure.

"We need you to keep the barrier up and going for twenty four hours while we take care of the threat." Medusa stopped the slap fest when she started feeling pity for the sobbing mess of a governor.

"Threat? What threat is there? With this barrier no cryptid can come in or out of the city. All we need to do is confine this thing and then..."

"We're not talking about cryptids, I'm talking about gods, like this one," Uriel said as he walked up to what seemed like a random hunter who didn't react in any way, at least not until Uriel started nearing him. With every step Uriel took, the hunter took one step back. "there's no point in keeping that form. I can see you." Said Uriel, now using the trick Saint Germain taught him.

"You are in the presence of Arausion, the ancient god of water, the giver of life..."

"And the one who started this mess." Uriel said right before activating his repentance skill on him.
