Chapter 909: Retribution Part 1
The moment Arausio spoke, his human cover faltered and his true appearance was revealed for all to see, though his size remained that of a human. His flat head and crab like features took nothing from his godly power and he seemingly illuminated the place, bringing life and color to an otherwise cold and gray city. But his reveal moment was cut short when Uriel grabbed his face and plummeted him to the ground.
"That's a god, can you not see him!?" Tine shrieked.
"So?" Uriel took apart his eyes from the so called god of water just enough to glare at Tina.
"Attacking a god is the epitome of all evil." Tina explained.
"According to gods, according to me, the epitome of all evil is attacking me. Let alone making an entire tournament just to get back at me. This little fellow thought he was being smart, but he didn't know I could see him the entire time." Uriel said with a smirk.
"All the time? And the others too?" Arausio spoke without bothering to attempt to release himself from his shameful position. Not that he lacked the power, but he knew the moment he made a move a battle would begin and although he knew he could take many of those present along with him, by swaying at least a portion of the hunters to at least retreat would make things a lot easier for him.
"Yes, especially that sneaky little bookie dude." Uriel said causing Sam to grimace as he just realized the bookie ran away with his money.
"Anyone who participates in any offensive action will face a heavy reprisal from the gods. We do not take such offenses lightly." Arausio said with a smug.
"Oh, really... go ahead, call them. They can all come together for all I care, I've been saving up a lot of damage over the past days and I'm more than willing to give them a taste."
Arausio was brought to remember the moment Uriel used his repentance skill on him and nearly lost his mind. In all of his eons of existence he never made a mistake as grave as entering a megacity thinking he could go unnoticed, especially without knowing that as he was cut from the world his power was also decimated. A fact Uriel learned from his mother soon after reuniting when she claimed she was nowhere near her full strength after being cut off from the world while she was trapped inside the dungeon.
"Unhand me, you filthy thing," Arausio squirmed, yet he didn't attempt to release himself under the threat of experiencing once more the alien feeling called 'pain'. "please, get him to let me go. I am a peaceful god of water." He begged.
"Uriel, you're going too far. What difference does it make if the gods pulled the strings to get me to start a tournament, he hasn't done anything wrong. I can feel it's sacred aura, I know it in my heart that he is a force of everything that's good in the world." Tina begged with teary eyes.
"That's his charm skill, the godly equivalent to puppy eyes." Sam scoffed.
"Yep, if you'd seen the things he did to his chosen you wouldn't even think to let this thing go." Uriel added.
"I did nothing to them, I only offered them a part of my power." Arausio defended himself.
"You are a crustacean, correct?" Asked Luna, though she waited for no answer and continued. "what you did was to transform the body of people without even understanding what a human is. The change was so drastic, instead of giving them power you just destroyed their DNA and they went... BOOM!" Said Luna as though she was explaining the basics to a child.
"Anyway, hand it over. You know what I'm talking about. It's either that or..."
"You filthy mortal! I can't believe I considered siding with your species. But it doesn't matter, there's hundreds of gods in this city and they are all onto you." Arausio bellowed at the same time he let out a massive amount of flux energy that made those who had yet to reach the holy rank kneel with the sole exception of the Dungeon Raiders who had learned to defend themselves by letting out a small portion of their flux energy surrounding their bodies at a steady pace.
The 'glistening flux coat' as they called it due to the faint sheen it caused acted as an air bubble, only instead of water it was the foreign flux energy. Water started coming out of every pore of those without a flux coat to protect them and from the ground itself and Jon reacted with a swift kick on the ground.
"You do realize he's actually a god?" Uriel lifted an inquisitive eyebrow at the holy rank archaeologist he refused to call father.
"If you knew the things I've done to a certain god..."
"Uncle!" Medusa scolded before Jon managed to finish the sentence.
Arausio laid on the ground confused as to why he couldn't see anything unaware that his entire flat head had just now became flatter after the disproportionate force used by Jon. The shockwave alone was enough to throw off most of the hunters that remained and they took the chance to get away from the dangerous situation.
"Repentance." The word echoed like a whisper causing Arausio's blood to spill all over the arena painting it in a bright blue color, foaming bubbles out of its crabby maw as it laid down unconscious on the ground. Going through with his threat was necessary as the deity's control over water was beyond the master level, but that left Uriel in a conundrum because he did not know how to kill a god other than spending his single use crystal dagger.
Surprisingly, the solution presented itself in the form of the least expected involved party when Wendy asked a simple, yet astounding question.
"Are you going to finish that?"
"Dig in." Uriel replied and watched as the horror level wendigo started nibbling on the god with the same modesty a woman on a date would display, only to become enthralled in a feeding frenzy like that of a shark. Breaking through the hard shell was difficult for her at first, but the more of the divine flesh she consumed the more powerful she became to the point where it looked as though she was eating a restaurant lobster and she finished by sucking up to the last drop of blue blood from her fingertips in a rather seductive way.
"What a fine meal." She huffed red in the face as she absorbed the nutrients.
"One less god to worry about." Uriel said as he dusted his hands.
"Not really, though. You do know that what she ate was only the god's avatar. Right?" Jon said.
"The what now?"
"Just like demons and angels, gods cannot present themselves in their true form because they are too powerful." Luna replied.
"Like titans!" Uriel blurted out.
"Not really, no. Remember what we theorized about titans? That they can't be killed and that is why they were sealed inside dungeons. I do not have any evidence to support this claim, but it is my belief that a titan's body is what they represent. In other words, let's say you kill the titan of water, then water simply ceases to exist." Luna elaborated.
"Thank goodness that isn't the case with gods." Jon let out in relief.
"Yeah, they're useless." Uriel grimaced.
"They're actually not. They mediate between the dominant species and the environment to keep the balance, at least that is how Dana put it. The fact that humans stopped believing in gods played a significant role in humanity's downfall, you may encounter all of it in my upcoming book which is a chronology of all that went wrong with humanity." Jon said.
"I've been wrong in almost all I said, I think it's time for me to take a nap." Uriel let out a long heave as he wondered if Nika felt that way whenever she attempted to participate on their conversations which distracted him enough for Sam to get close enough to heal him. The exhilarating feeling that came after, the thrill in the blood and the absolute power Uriel briefly experienced left him speechless, though thanks to the bandages that covered him almost entirely prevented people from noticing, except for Luna who immediately picked up on the scent.
"That is a big no in medicine." She scolded Sam who then defended himself.
"I admit it, but... our job is not done yet and we can't afford Uriel sleeping it off like always. He always gets up late." Luna would have liked to argue with Sam, but she didn't like to argue and didn't like Sam either.
With Uriel's wounds healed and his stamina recovered, the only thing he lacked now was to replenish his flux energy which unfortunately to him, required an amount of tier 3 batteries he could only get at the Cryptid hunting agency. Or so he thought initially, but then he remembered how Mister Scofield was also a general in the army and he took the chance to offer Mister Scofield a ride to the barracks.
