Chapter 907: The tournament of retribution Part 3

The only thing standing between Uriel and his desired prize was the last fight. As expected and heavily anticipated by the public, his opponent was no one but Wendy, the only member of the Fallen corporation that participated in the tournament. Up until that moment no one knew how did she manage to get so far as it seemed she as though she won all of her matches out of luck.

She didn't seem strong, didn't act strong, but her fights always ended in her being the only one standing. People suspected her trait was related to the fact that she always waited for her opponent to attack to make her move, but there were also a couple times where she took the initiative and the result remained the same.

Needless to say, her fights were boring and predictable, especially when compared with Uriel's ingenious and desperate fighting style, but everyone rooted for her. If not for her results and her beauty, the fact that she was the only one who could stop the most hated contestant to step on the arena did the trick.

Surprisingly, though, even Uriel's friends seemed to root for her which left her in a state of confusion after she appeared on the stage. Some of the Dungeon Raiders stood next to Sam who seemed pleased by the company, and that was strange enough. Added to that was the fact that even Jon Hunter and Xavier Scofield, hunters she didn't know in person and only from what Sam told her, they also supported her.

"Thank you, I'll do my best!" She blew a kiss in an uncharacteristic fashion expecting some sort of reaction, but apart from a brief moment of confusion they all continued cheering for her to win the fight.

Due to her being occupied in the tournament, she had no means her loss was fated by the goddess of fate herself and she also did not know the reasons why people who should be against her were showing their support. But even if she knew, she would have cared little about it as the moment Uriel showed up she felt the urge to rescind from the competition.

"Hey! I ordered a powerful hunter with an unbreakable fighting spirit, not a half dead stinky bunch of clothes." She mouthed covering her nose in disgust. Uriel appeared on the arena covered in bandages soaked in blood and he didn't bother replying. Instead, he just adopted a fighting stance and remained still awaiting for the referee to give the signal and that was enough to trigger Wendy enough so that she didn't want to drop out anymore. "good thing is, you'll save some time in the infirmary since you're already all dressed up in bandages."

Uriel didn't laugh and neither did he acknowledge her in anyway, which prompted Wendy to start the fight by taking the initiative the moment the referee nodded at her.

The crowd erupted into a loud cheer when Wendy's hand went through the mummified hunter as though it was butter, though when she attempted to crush the heart in her hands she realized there was none.

"How is this possible!? All humans should have a heart." She attempted to take her hand out of the limp body, but found it to be impossible and from the corner of her eye she glimpsed sparks of blue electricity before feeling the immense pressure of a punch to the face.

"They should, shouldn't them?" Uriel recalled the mummy he used as a decoy and followed with a backhand slap that reverberated in the arena shutting up the crowd in the process. Uriel expected the fight to be over, but Wendy gritted her teeth and kicked Uriel in the stomach sending him flying away to the corner of the arena and then she swept the blood that trickled from the corner of her lip.

"You didn't think it would be that easy, did you?" She spat a mouthful of blood before leaping forward in a flying kick Uriel could have dodged, but decided to block with both hands while keeping Dash active.

A slight pressure at first and then the weight of a tow truck, Wendy's kick far surpassed those of Medusa which took Uriel aback.

"You're a holy rank hunter." Uriel said uncaring of the open microphone prompting the crowd to burst into expressions of disbelief as the heavenly rank was supposed to be the peak of humanity. Those in the know facepalmed at Uriel's blunder, but not his friends and the reason was simple.

After their conversation with Uriel one thing became clear. Uriel winning the tournament would be the trigger for all those present to die not just any death, but a horrible one as living sacrifice for the gods present.

The fact that the gods planned the event was already a shock, but it was Uriel's expressionless face when telling them he already knew it what caused his friends to root for Wendy in spites of their dislike for her. It was nothing specific what caused their distaste for her, but rather a gut feeling that something was off about her.

Unbeknownst to Uriel's friends and those present, her true nature was about to be revealed for everyone to see as Wendy burst into a toothy laughter.

"A holy rank hunter! Me!? Nothing could be further from the truth, you see..." Wendy attempted to speak, but Uriel figured it was the best moment to get an edge in the fight and he attempted to kick her away.

"What the..." Uriel managed to mutter behind his bandages as Wendy's head snapped in 180° after the kick, but instead of falling limp like a ragdoll her body remained as though nothing happened.

"I am a hunter, just not in the sense of the word you think. I am the hunter." She laughed maniacally as she gripped Uriel's arms with both her hands without bothering to snap her head back into place.

"You... you're a cryptid." Uriel accused, the microphone mute after his past mistake, though it was not necessary for people to realize what kind of creature she was all of their electronic devices had been turned off in a thirty block radius.

Cellphones, smart watches, tablets, cameras, everything was turned off. Even the drones flying in the air that were being used to relay the sounds and pictures of the event started falling in the most expensive rain the megacity of New Texas had ever witnessed.

"Well, do'h. I'm a wendigo." Wendy exclaimed in a shrill voice while laughing at the same time, displaying the uncanny ability some cryptids possess Luna described in her bestiary as polifonic speaking.

Uriel would have loved to laugh at the joke, but of all the cryptids he encountered wendigos were among the most dreaful enemies he ever faced. Killing the hybrid version was already difficult, but the real thing was impossible to deal with even at the entity level and judging by Wendy's physical prowess and the strength of her Field of disruption it was easy to assume she was at the horror level.

In response to the tight grip on his arms, Uriel let out a vast amount of flux energy that allowed him to withstand the psychological impact it caused to be in the presence of a strong cryptid such as Wendy.

"What the hell are you waiting for, seal the city you useless governor." Sam shouted as he accompanied his voice with a slight amount of flux, just enough to reach Tina who shook her head in shock.

"It is too late, I shall feast on you all." Wendy cackled as she extender her body to catch Uriel as though she was made of rubber, though instead of deforming her body seemingly grew longer giving her the sleek appearance of a spider wearing the flesh of a human being.

Wendy grazed Uriel's bandages but that was all she managed as Uriel ran around the stage repeating the words 'oh shit' like a chant. As any sane hunter, he was deadly afraid of wendigos, even more considering the current circumstances as the only known way to kill a wendigo was to deprive it of food and Wendy was currently at the cryptid equivalent to an all you can eat buffet. But not even that was enough for Uriel to escape the arena and he stubbornly refused to set foot outside the arena.

"How long are you going to watch and do nothing?" Medusa asked Sam who had an amused look on his face.

"Just a little bit longer." He lingered on each word as he enjoyed the sight of Uriel running away for dear life too much to let the moment pass.

Tina hung on the edge of her seat as there was nothing she would have liked to see more than Uriel getting eaten, but as people escaped from the stadium she was forced to do what Sam asked and she activated the barrier remotely to seal the cryptid inside the city.

That should have been enough to change Wendy's focus and start chasing after the routed crowd, but her eyes remained fixated on Uriel as she chased him all over the arena matching the speed of Uriel's Dash skill with ease.

"Do it now!" Medusa shouted and Sam understood he was one wrong word from becoming a statue on the spot.
