The instant the alarm blared, V's stomach dropped.

They were trapped in a narrow checkpoint corridor, a kill box bristling with automated turrets and heavily armed border guards. There was no room to maneuver, no way to turn back, and absolutely no chance of blasting their way through.

And they didn't have time to figure out an escape plan.

In seconds, the guards and the turrets would open fire, turning the entire vehicle—and everyone inside—into little more than shredded metal and meat.

At first, the guards seemed just as confused as V felt.

Most of them had never even heard a Tier-One security alert before. This level of alarm wasn't something they activated for smugglers or unauthorized travelers—it was reserved for full-scale military invasions.

Yet here they were, sirens wailing, AI security systems screaming about a foreign terrorist threat, all because of a single, beat-up Rattlesnake off-roader with three passengers.

Some of the guards hesitated, frowning at their HUD displays, wondering if the system had glitched.

But hesitation didn't mean defiance.

Even if the AI had glitched, its commands overrode their personal judgment. Protocol was absolute.

The turrets swiveled.

Fingers tightened on triggers.

In the next second, hell was about to rain down.

And then—

A flash of motion.

A blur too fast for the human eye to track.

Before the guards could process what was happening, all of their rifles shattered in their hands. The barrels, the stocks—everything had been sliced clean through.

The turrets, which had locked onto V's vehicle, were instantly bisected—the muzzles collapsing in half, useless heaps of ruined metal.

Only two seconds had passed.

And before anyone could react, Ethan was already standing behind the Rattlesnake.

Then, as if physics itself had no hold on him—

He bent down, grabbed the entire vehicle, and with a single, fluid motion, lifted it off the ground.

V barely had time to gasp before she felt the entire car soar through the air.

The checkpoint, the turrets, the armed guards—all vanished in a blink.

And then—impact.

The Rattlesnake landed with a heavy thud on the open highway just beyond the checkpoint.

V's hands clenched the wheel so tightly her knuckles turned white. Her pulse was hammering in her ears.

What the actual fuck just happened?!

"Shit!" She barely kept the car steady, her breath coming out in short bursts. "What the hell was that?! How did we just—?!"

Jack, however, was unfazed.

Unlike V, he knew exactly what had happened.

But now wasn't the time to explain.

"Drive, V!" he barked. "Get us the hell out of here! Floor it to Night City!"

V's heart was still racing, but she pushed everything aside, shoving the pedal down and sending the Rattlesnake roaring forward.

Behind them, the checkpoint was in total chaos.

Guards shouted in confusion, struggling to process what had just happened. The automated systems kept looping their security warnings, but their guns were gone.

Their vehicles—all of them—had been cut in half.

Back in the car—

Barely five seconds after throwing the vehicle, Ethan was already back in his seat.

There was no dramatic landing, no visible movement—just an eerie, impossible transition, as if he had never left in the first place.

Jack turned in his seat, eyeing him with an amused smirk.

"Mano, that was some fast work. But you think the NCPD's gonna let this slide?"

Ethan leaned back, unfazed. "They won't be following us. Their cars are scrap metal now. They'd have to chase us on foot."

Hearing their conversation, V felt a chill run down her spine.

She had known Ethan was strong.

After all, he had eaten a shotgun blast point-blank earlier without so much as flinching. That alone was insane.

But this?

This was something else entirely.

She had no idea what Ethan was, but she did know one thing—

She was damn glad he was on her side.

For now, though, the immediate danger had passed.

They were free.

At least… for the moment.

V sped down the highway leading into Night City, leaving the border checkpoint far behind. The flashing security lights and automated gun turrets were now nothing more than distant memories in her rearview mirror.

Ethan hadn't expected himself to be the one who triggered the alarm.

When he had left the city earlier through a different checkpoint, nothing had happened.

"Looks like inbound security is way stricter than outbound. Next time, I'll just sneak in alone."

Ethan made a mental note of it.

Back at the checkpoint, he had deliberately held back.

It wasn't just about avoiding unnecessary casualties—though that was part of it. The real reason was far more calculated.

If he had wiped out that NCPD security checkpoint entirely, it would have put a massive target on his back.

The Night City Police Department wasn't just some underfunded local precinct.

Their biggest backer was Night Corp. But they also received significant funding from Arasaka and Militech—the two most powerful megacorporations on the planet.

Pissing off NCPD meant pissing off all three of them.

Right now, that was not something Ethan wanted.

Not because he couldn't handle it—but because Jack and V would be collateral damage.

He had no problem taking care of himself.

But dragging them into a corporate war? Not an option.

Just as Ethan was settling into the relief of having avoided a major disaster—

A new problem presented itself.

On the horizon, moving at ridiculous speeds, a black military hovercraft was closing in on them from Night City.

Ethan's sharp eyes caught the Arasaka logo gleaming on the side of the vehicle.

His expression darkened.

"Shit. Not them again."

The hovercraft was absurdly fast—far outpacing the sluggish Rattlesnake.

Within seconds, it was already in front of them, blocking the road.

A cold, emotionless female voice blared through the vehicle's external comms:

"We have detected corporate assets among your cargo. This operation is classified as smuggling."

"Pull over immediately and submit to inspection."

"Repeat—pull over immediately and submit to inspection."

"Failure to comply will result in armed intervention and asset retrieval by force."

The voice had the precise, mechanical chill of someone who wouldn't hesitate to give the kill order.

V gritted her teeth and slammed a fist on the steering wheel.

"What the fuck is with my luck today?! First NCPD, and now Arasaka?!"

She was pissed.

But fear?

Not even a little.

Instead of slowing down, she kept the accelerator floored.

She was going full speed—straight toward the military hovercraft.

Jack, riding shotgun, smirked.

"That's right. Keep going. Ethan will handle it."

V snapped her head toward him.

Jack wasn't nervous.

Not even a little.

He was completely calm.

Relaxed, even.

The kind of confidence that only comes from knowing you've got an ace up your sleeve.

V's grip on the wheel tightened.

And more importantly—

How the hell was he going to get them out of this one?
