Chapter 765: Dragonslayer — A Damsel In Distress!!
A few moments before,
"You can't?!" Black gasped at Daphne. "And you are telling this to me now?!"
They were walking toward the exit, a concerned McGonagall cheering them on from behind.
"Look…" Daphne said again, the tips of her fingers throbbing. This would be the first time when so many people would be… looking at her.
Normally, that wouldn't have concerned her, as she had already done this during the Intra-School Competition. But this wasn't normal, either.
Sigh! "Look…" She took a deep breath. "I can only Summon a magical creature… what comes out is beyond my control… But generally…"
"Generally?!" Black looked at her as if she had betrayed him.
"… Generally, they all are pretty strong. You remember the snake, right?"
"The one that almost killed Draco?"
"Yeah…" The corner of Daphne's mouth twitched. She had to look away to hide it. "… That one."
With thick awkwardness lingering between them, the pair of second years entered the arena, and their jaws dropped.
Crack!
Patches of dark clouds littered so close that it felt like they just had to jump to touch them.
Bolts of green lightning rumbled from one cloud to the next, annihilating whatever came in their paths.
Hundreds of rocks hung midair, thin mist surrounding them.
"… Is it…" Black looked at Daphne, "… supposed to be like this?"
Daphne, for once, knew it wasn't. This was what her friend had left for them. This was what Darcie had left for Black.
Oh, Darcie… Daphne shook her head.
She looked at Black, and her heart thumped because Black's face had paled all of a sudden.
"RUN!!!"
Ripping one of the patches of clouds, the Hungarian Horntail fell toward them, tiny arcs of electricity flashing bronze and green against its scales.
It didn't roar. It didn't yowl. It didn't light up the sky with its fiery breath.
It came straight to bite their heads off.
Daphne shouldn't have panicked. But she did.
As she turned away to run, her foot slipped over the pebbles, and she fell forward. Then, she saw Black still standing there, now smiling at the dragon.
"What are you doing?!" she screamed, picking herself up. "Run!"
She didn't think that Black heard her at all. He was lifting his hands out. Then he shouted over his lungs. "Awesome Power of Blue Magic Armor! Come!!"
Silence.
Nothing happened.
Black: "…?"
Daphne: "…?"
Dragon: "…?"
The Audience: "…?"
Unlike Black and Daphne under the magical dome, who couldn't hear the roaring crowd outside, the audience could hear everything. The same was true for the judges, who could hear the students as well. A necessary step for giving them marks for good coordination.
When Black and Daphne had marched onto the Quidditch Field, the crowd of students, other than Gryffindors, had heavily booed them.
It was less because of Daphne, who was a Slytherin.
Shockingly, despite being a Slytherin much like Pansy, Daphne had gathered a sizable number of fans herself.
First, she was Darcie's friend. Second, her personality matched Darcie's. Third, she was beautiful.
The number of these fans never reached high enough to be a club, but still, it was enough for Daphne not to be hated as a Slytherin.
Much of the booing was directed at Black.
He was shameless. He thought he could beat Darcie one-on-one. He openly badmouthed her. He was a narcissist. His humor was bland. What else was there to say?
So, when they all saw him just standing there with his hands stretched out, it felt like he wanted to die, letting the dragon rip off his head.
Strangely, as Dumbledore had predicted, the crowd had gone silent momentarily… for entirely different reasons than Darcie's.
On the ground, Black looked around him.
He saw a few flickers of bluishness, but then it all disappeared. "Eh?"
Over his head, the dragon saw Black's posture as a blatant challenge from its prey. It let out a monstrous growl, flapped its giant wings, and lunged at him.
Daphne slammed herself into Black, sending them rolling in the dust.
The dragon's fanged mouth passed over their heads.
Outside the magical dome, the crowd hissed.
Thrill was in the air… strange…
Emotions were boiling… very strange…
Yellow Crystals were dancing in their eyes… absolutely strange…
…
"Run!" Spitting out dirt, Darcie grabbed Black's hand and ran.
Behind them, the dragon threw its massive head left and right in anger. It eyed the running prey and chased them on its legs.
But even Black knew, running like this, hand in hand, they were just asking the dragon to have the dish with sauce.
As he thought that, Black laughed. "Hahaha! You should… hear… this joke…"
With a sheer dumbfounded look on her face, Daphne looked at him over her shoulder, both still running. "You are mad."
Suddenly, Black snatched his hand from her grip. "Call it out! I will distract it!!"
Then, under Daphne's wide eyes, Black made a face toward the dragon and ran away, the Hungarian Horntail changing direction along with him.
She couldn't believe it.
Arlen Black, the madman, was still making jokes…
Huh? Daphne noticed something odd. Why am I smiling?
Locking in and taking a deep breath, Daphne activated the Spell while simultaneously calling out the Grimoire.
While the dragon was a magical lifeform from the Grimoire as well, Madam Villanelle had told her that taking out Daemonologie wouldn't affect it in any way.
The black book materialized overhead, exuding black-purple mist.
At the same moment, Daphne's shadow twisted, a thin trail of blackness latching itself to the book.
With a buzzing swish, the magical creature lunged out, and information regarding it bombarded Daphne's mind.
It was a bipedal, slate gray, fox-like Pokemon with crimson and black accents.
It had a pointed snout and a large, red, voluminous mane with black tips, tied into a ponytail.
Its arms had spiky extensions of fur at the elbows, and it had red claws on its hands and feet.
As Daphne called out its name, its red-rimmed eyes shone blue.
"Zoroark —"
In the distance, Black was running high on his heels, but the dragon was already looming over his head.
Even from so far away, Daphne could see the glow coming out of the beast's mouth.
It could spit out fire at any moment.
It could burn Black right there and then.
Daphne… didn't want that to happen to him at all.
"— Night Daze!"
The Pokemon hissed and blurred out of existence.
The next time it appeared, it was right between the dragon and Black. With its arms glowing purple, it slammed them into the earth.
A purple, magical shield exploded with the Pokemon at the center, struck the dragon, and pushed it back.
ROARRRRRRRRRRR!!!
A few of the Hungarian Horntail's teeth broke, and it roared in pain.
Raising its head, it spat out a bubbling pillar of fire.
The power behind the fire was so great that it tore through the shield, hit the Pokemon square on the chest, and sent it flying, its mane burning.
"No!" Daphne screamed.
In pure madness, the dragon turned around and saw Daphne, the book hovering above her hand. In one great swoop, it covered the distance between itself and her.
Daphne called out the Pokemon in her heart, but she knew it couldn't come.
And she couldn't summon another Pokemon before the first one disappeared.
In horror, she looked blankly as the beast towered over her, its cat-like yellow eyes reflecting her tiny appearance.
The mouth opened.
She saw red. She felt the heat. She sensed the madness.
Then a blue stroke of finesse blurred her vision, the dragon's head separating from its body.
As the headless dragon fell, he landed in front of her, carrying dual swords made of blue light.
He was donning an armor of blue fire, tongues of flames lifting off him, melting into the surroundings.
"You know what you are…" his voice rang in her ears with a strange rhythm.
Daphne shook her head.
The armor of blue flames disappeared, showing Black, his face bloodier than ever.
"You are… a damsel in distress."
She didn't want to do it. Not here. In front of him.
But Daphne's lips arched up and she laughed.
