Chapter 283: Mu Nan’s Hope
The wait took two hours, but by the time it was done, Mu Nan could already speak, albeit with a low voice. But all the people in the room being cultivators and superpower users, they could hear him loud and clear.
As it turned out, when Pei Ming was preparing the IV, he had added some of their drinking water in the glucose.
They weren't stupid, the few soldiers had long realized that the water Ye Xuan gave them to drink was not ordinary. It was just that he never said anything and just told them to use it for drinking. So, they said nothing and pretended to know nothing as well.
This was because of the trust they had in each other. They knew that Ye Xuan would not give them anything that would hurt them, hence, they used the water without any burden.
"Thank you." Those were the two words that Mu Nan said after he was able to talk. It also confirmed their speculation that he was indeed still a human.
"You are welcome. You just had glucose injected into your body. Wait for a while then you can drink some soup. You can't leave for now. We will finish our mission then come back and take you with us." Yang Leo, who was familiar with Mu Nan, told him about the situation.
The others stood by and waited, they had to collect the things they needed before the water got to their floor.
Mu Nan had no objection to their plans. They had already been delayed because of him and they had found him by accident anyway. They were not obligated to help but they had brought him back from the brink of death.
He believed that they had not gone to such an extent to save him only to abandon him there to die. So, he didn't feel reluctant when Yang Leo informed him. He just nodded his head slightly.
"Jing Xian, you stay here and look after him. It's not safe to leave him alone in case a tide comes in and the place floods. The water is too close now." Gu Fan instructed one of his comrades to stay behind and watch over the patient.
"Okay Captain." Jing Xian immediately found a seat and sat back down to watch over Mu Nan.
The others left and only silence could be hard in the room with two men. Mu Nan wanted to express his gratitude to the soldier in the room. To thank him for ignoring his mission and staying there just to protect an insignificant dying student like him, but he didn't have much strength to express everything.
Jing Xian seemed to know what the young man was thinking and consoled him.
"You don't have to feel burdened. You seem to be someone important to brother Yang. He is family, so you are family. You don't have to worry about anything.
Just focus on recovering so that all our efforts would not have been in vain. If you are careful, you will make a full recovery in a few days. If we found the Major's mother-in-law, you can recover even faster. So, there is nothing to worry about." Jing Xian was not usually a talkative person but he thought that if he was in the same situation as Mu Nan, he would not like to be treated like an invalid.
So, he offered what he deemed comforting words, also affirming that Mu Nan was just sick and would get better.
Mu Nan appreciated those words more than he cared to admit. He has suspected that even if he was saved, the long periods of malnutrition and dehydration might have caused irreparable damage to his body and he would become a useless burden in the future even if he was saved.
However, for some reason, he had immense trust in the words Jing Xian spoke. He said he would make a full recovery and he believed that. He didn't know whether it was his way of coping, but he believed he would get better and be of use to his saviors.
Seeing how close Yang Leo was to the soldiers, he wondered whether he had joined the military after the apocalypse. He had experienced the horrors of the apocalypse as early as now and knew that having a place to anchor and people to support you was very important.
He hoped that not many people would experience the awful experience he had gone through.
The rest of the group went to different floors and collected many components that were required in making the communication devices and many other things.
Just because something was not needed at that moment, didn't mean it won't be needed later, so the few people collected anything that seemed useful and still intact and had Li Kun put them away.
Once they had all the things Yang Leo might need, he asked them to take him to the office building to get his research materials from his office. Since they were already there, they saw no need to go back home while leaving something so important behind. What if it benefitted others or was swept away by the floods.
Hence, the group left the building and went to the administration block, which was also half submerged to collect whatever Yang Leo needed.
As soon as they climbed through the window, something came towards them at the speed of light. Fortunately, they were cultivators now. Their first reaction was to form a shield using spiritual power in front of them.
When the thing coming towards them hit the barrier created by spiritual energy, it stopped and started to disintegrate. As it turned out, they had been attacked by a zombie that could control elements.
The thing that had been thrown at them was some shapeless object made of metal. It seemed that the zombie could create objects as long as they had an element near them.
That zombie had actually used the concrete on the wall to create metal. It was incredible, but also dangerous if such a zombie was left to advance.
