Chapter 15: DTCD [15]
As this monster took the field, the entire venue fell into dead silence.
It was a long time before someone finally stammered out:
"Th...The third archetype..."
A tense hush hung over the crowd, veins bulging slightly on many arms.
Yes, three archetypes—it was truly envy-inducing.
Their shock wasn't due to how powerful the monster was, but because of the Duelist who had summoned it.
They were thankful just to have one usable Deck, yet the person before them could freely combine three synergistic archetypes into a single Deck.
And a Deck like that... who knew how many times stronger it was than theirs?
Everyone watching the Duel couldn't help but feel pity.
Gavin was in for a rough time.
Down in the Arena, Gavin's own veins throbbed visibly, his eye twitching nonstop.
What kind of joke was this?!
Able to use three archetypes and master four of the six summoning methods? How could someone like that be so young?! How could someone like that appear in a place like Tenkai City?!
Just what kind of person had Marina brought back?!
"At the moment the Synchro Summon succeeds, the effect of [Mecha Phantom Beast O-Lion] in the Graveyard activates!"
"If this card is sent to the Graveyard: Special Summon 1 'Mecha Phantom Beast Token' (Machine/WIND/Level 3/ATK 0/DEF 0)."
Another identical Token appeared on the field.
Kai continued, "Next, I activate the effect of [Accel Synchron]!"
"Once per turn: You can send 1 'Synchron' monster from your Deck to the Graveyard to activate one of the following effects:"
● This card gains Levels equal to that monster.
● This card loses Levels equal to that monster.
"I send [Jet Synchron] from the Deck to the Graveyard and reduce [Accel Synchron]'s Level by that amount."
[Accel Synchron] is now Level 4.
A card slid out of Kai's Deck and dropped into the Graveyard.
"Now, I activate the effect of [Jet Synchron] that was just sent to the Graveyard!"
"If this card is in the Graveyard: You can discard 1 card; Special Summon this card."
"If Special Summoned by this effect, banish it when it leaves the field."
"I discard [Cyber Dragon Vier] from my hand to Special Summon it!"
Yellow flames flared in Kai's Graveyard, gears whirring as a monster with a fiery tail appeared on the field.
[Jet Synchron] Level 1│FIRE│Tuner│Machine│500 ATK
Another Tuner. And the Synchro Monster summoned earlier was also a Tuner.
Now Kai had monsters on the field with Levels 1 + 3 + 3 + 4—He could double-tune a Level 11 Synchro Monster!
Gavin didn't use a Synchro Deck himself, but he knew the harder a Synchro Summon was, the stronger the monster it brought out!
That said, the real question was: wasn't Kai a Cyber Dragon player?!
How had it come to this point?!
As Gavin anxiously watched, Kai spoke again:
"I tune [Jet Synchron] with one [Mecha Phantom Beast Token]!"
Gavin relaxed a little. At least it wasn't going to be a Level 11 Synchro.
If it was just a Level 4, it likely wouldn't be too powerful. Probably just a bridge monster.
"Pure starlight, gather and form a bridge to the future! In the name of light, proclaim the truth of all things!"
"Synchro Summon!"
"Descend—[Herald of the Arc Light]!"
A swirl of rainbow light spiraled overhead, a holy white stone levitating in midair, its wings made of multicolored radiance.
[Herald of the Arc Light] Level 4│LIGHT│Synchro│Fairy│600 ATK
With that posture, with that name, there was no doubt it was from the Herald series.
The crowd was growing numb… How could one person be beloved by so many spirits?
It wasn't like they hadn't tried forcing two archetypes into a single Deck before.
Even so, almost all had ended in failure. Only a few with overwhelming skill could forcibly tame card spirits.
Due to his age, no one had ever suspected Kai of being such a person. They just assumed he was unusually loved by spirits, with many willing to serve him.
Though now that Kai had summoned [Herald of the Arc Light]... Did that mean he could perform Ritual Summons too?
If so, then only Pendulum Summon remained out of the six.
Such terrifying talent. Being loved by spirits might be luck… even if that may be, mastering so many summoning methods at his age?
That had to be earned.
Under the glow of prismatic light, Gavin began to despair. This was nothing like any Duel he'd fought before!
Kai shook his head and said calmly, "Don't despair just yet. My turn isn't over."
"I activate the effect of [Clockwork Night] in the Graveyard!"
"Banish this card from the Graveyard and discard 1 card: Add 1 EARTH Machine monster from your Deck to your hand."
"I banish it and discard [Cyber Dragon Core]."
"I add [Therion "King" Regulus] from my Deck to my hand!"
Yet another archetype. They were tired. Let the world end.
The crowd had gone from shocked to desensitized.
Kai revealed the card that had popped from his Deck.
"I activate [Therion "King" Regulus]'s effect in my hand, targeting 1 'Beetrooper' or Machine monster in my Graveyard."
"Special Summon this card from your hand, and equip the targeted monster to it as an Equip Spell."
"I target [Clockwork Knight] in my Graveyard, and also equip it with [Cyber Dragon Herz]!"
"Descend now! [Therion "King" Regulus]!"
A red cape fluttered in the wind as a hulking, machine warrior descended from the sky and landed on Kai's field.
[Therion "King" Regulus] Level 8│EARTH│Machine│2800 ATK
"Alright, I end my turn. It's your move."
Kai exhaled deeply, the expression on his face softening.
Setting up the board really is satisfying!
