Yaxoc's Adventure: Act 5

Chapter 3: Chapter 3: Gem Of Perseverance

The moon hung low in the sky, casting eerie shadows over the forest as the squad stumbled into a dilapidated shelter they had scouted earlier. Its worn wooden frame creaked under the weight of the night's silence, but it was sturdy enough to serve their purpose.

"That was close..." Moonlight mumbled, her voice barely audible over her labored breaths. She wiped her brow, her face betraying both exhaustion and concern. "I think Lucius might be watching us everywhere."

Yaxoc, who had been silently rummaging through his satchel, finally looked up. "But who stopped him? All I saw was a fraction of ice spikes before we ran."

"Huh, must've been some sort of sneaky savior..." Yaxocara said, settling against the shelter wall as her aura flickered faintly.

Cherrystone shook her head, her fox ears twitching. "But saviors are not a thing in Urantica. The nearest one is located in Urinto," she said matter-of-factly. "Unless... unless the savior was sent to watch over Urantica. But I don't think that's possible."

Moonlight leaned against the wall, her staff resting at her side. "We should sleep if we want to find the Gem of Perseverance. And we've gotta watch our backs so Lucius doesn't kill us while we're vulnerable."

Cherrystone nodded in agreement and stood up, brushing the dirt off her robes. "Yeah, I agree. Let's just sleep." She turned toward the small room at the back of the shelter. "Good night, everyone."

The trio watched as she closed the door behind her, leaving them alone in the main room.

Yaxoc turned to Moonlight, his expression thoughtful. "We should plan... but before that—what happens if we fuse all the gems? Surely there's a reason why we're collecting them, right?"

Moonlight raised an eyebrow but didn't answer immediately. She glanced at Yaxocara, who had dozed off on Yaxoc's shoulder, her tin pot helmet slightly askew. Moonlight's lips curled into a faint smile before she responded.

"I have no clue," she admitted. "But Cherrystone mentioned something about them earlier. From what I understand, she knows more than she's letting on."

"Did you overhear anything?" Yaxoc pressed, leaning closer.

"Well... I did," Moonlight said hesitantly. "She mentioned that the fused gems have a name: the Gem of Hope."

Yaxoc's eyes widened slightly. "The Gem of Hope? I think I've heard about it... in some ancient mythology. I always thought it was just a myth."

Moonlight's expression grew serious. "I think that myth has proven to be true. And when I heard that name, I couldn't help but wonder... just how powerful could they be when used together?"

Yaxoc didn't reply immediately. Instead, he stared into the flickering light of their small lantern, his mind racing with possibilities. After a few moments, he sighed and leaned back against the wall, careful not to disturb Yaxocara.

"We'll find out soon enough," he said softly.

With that, the trio finally settled in for the night, their breaths evening out as exhaustion took over.

By the time the sun had climbed high into the sky, the squad was already preparing to set off.

"Ah, we're all fresh," Cherrystone said cheerfully, stretching her arms. Her fox tail swayed lazily as she adjusted her robes. "Let's go find that Gem of Perseverance, people!"

Yaxoc grinned, placing his tin pot helmet snugly on his head. "Ready as ever," he said, glancing at Yaxocara, who mimicked his actions with her own helmet.

Moonlight stood outside, waiting for them to finish gathering their belongings. As they stepped out, she nodded in approval. "Ah, just in time. I managed to contact someone earlier this morning. We'll need to head to another continent soon."

"Which continent?" Yaxoc asked, slinging his satchel over his shoulder.

"Masoquest," Moonlight replied. "So let's get moving!"

As the squad walked through the dense forest, Lucius watched them from a secluded spot, his dark cloak blending into the shadows.

"I see... the other gems must be located on different continents," he muttered to himself. "I should move quickly—"

Before he could finish his thought, a sharp impact struck his side, sending him sprawling to the ground.

"Not so fast, coward," a cold voice said.

Lucius groaned, pushing himself up to see Sukorian standing over him. The white-robed figure's crimson eyes glowed ominously beneath his owl mask.

"Nice catch, Sukorian," another voice said, and Nova stepped into view, his presence equally commanding.

Sukorian's gaze shifted to Nova, narrowing slightly. "And you... I should have killed you for the eighth time."

Nova smirked, unfazed. "Relax. We're not here to fight—at least not with each other. Let's focus on stopping this guy from taking the gems."

Lucius glared at the two of them, his fists clenching. "You brats..." he muttered angrily before vanishing in a burst of dark energy.

"Don't worry," Sukorian said confidently, already opening a swirling portal with a flick of his wrist. "I know exactly where he's going."

Without another word, he stepped into the portal, Nova following close behind.

Meanwhile, the squad had reached another forest, its towering trees casting long shadows across their path.

"This place seems... normal," Yaxoc said, glancing around warily.

"Yeah, there's no supernatural weirdness," Yaxocara agreed.

"That's what they want you to think," Cherrystone said knowingly. "When night falls, these trees will change—colors, shapes, everything. You won't even recognize this place."

As they walked, Yaxoc's sharp eyes caught sight of something glinting in the sunlight. Nestled atop a pile of leaves was the Gem of Perseverance, its surface shimmering with an unearthly light.

"Is that it?" Yaxoc asked, pointing.

Cherrystone stepped closer, her expression cautious. "Careful. These leaves aren't ordinary. They're Nature Ninjas."

Before anyone could react, the leaves began to rustle violently. Six green-clad ninjas materialized, their movements fluid and precise.

"Who dares to take our gem?" one of the ninjas demanded, his voice sharp.

Cherrystone bowed slightly, her tone polite but firm. "My deepest apologies, but we need that gem. It's for something very important."

The second ninja scoffed. "And what makes you think we're just going to hand it over, fox girl?"

Cherrystone sighed, already anticipating the conflict. "Yaxocara, they're all yours."

Yaxocara smirked, stepping forward. "Listen up, you glorified garden weeds. Hand over the gem, or I'll give you the worst beating of your lives."

The ninjas burst into laughter.

"You can't scare us," the fourth ninja taunted. "And you, pot girl—you look like someone left you unfinished at the cookout!"

Yaxocara's glare darkened, her hand moving to the hilt of her sword.

"I think you're asking for a death wish," she said coldly.

"Bring it, pot girl!" the ninja mocked.

Cherrystone stepped forward, placing a hand on Yaxocara's shoulder. "Save your energy. Let me handle this."

Without waiting for a response, Cherrystone snapped her fingers. A flurry of glowing ruby hands materialized, slapping the ninjas aside like ragdolls. The Gem of Perseverance fell to the ground, unguarded.

Yaxoc and Yaxocara stared in shock, while Moonlight remained calm, her expression unreadable.

"Is it done now?" Moonlight asked, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "I'm starting to get bored."

"Almost," Cherrystone replied, picking up the gem. "Let's head back to the shelter. We've got what we came for."

The group nodded, leaving the defeated ninjas behind as they disappeared into the forest.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile, Xavy observed the group from a distance, his silhouette partially obscured by the tall grass. His sharp, inquisitive eyes followed their movements as they walked away, leaving behind the fallen Nature Ninjas. A faint smirk crossed his face as he murmured to himself.

"They're collecting the gems already. Nova and Sukorian seem intent on keeping Lucius from getting his hands on them," Xavy noted, stepping out from the shadows and approaching the scattered ninjas. Their once-proud forms lay crumpled on the ground, groaning in pain.

Xavy crouched beside them, his expression one of detached curiosity. "You're the little guys who were protecting the gem, huh?" he asked, his voice low but sharp.

One of the ninjas groaned, forcing himself up slightly. "Ugh... Who are you?"

Xavy waved dismissively, his tone disinterested. "That's not important. What I'm more curious about is your story—how you were protecting the gem. I'll listen unless your explanation's too dumb to be worth my time."

Ninja 1 struggled to sit upright, his voice tinged with bitterness. "Whatever… We just camouflage as leaves with these outfits. When someone tries to take the gem, we attack."

Xavy raised a brow. "Camouflage, huh? Interesting method. How exactly do you attack?"

Ninja 4, still clutching his bruised arm, spat out, "With our katanas, of course. What did you think? Our fists?"

Xavy nodded thoughtfully. "And why are you protecting the gem in the first place? Don't tell me you're doing this out of the goodness of your hearts."

Ninja 5 let out a weary sigh. "Our government ordered us to. They're trying to learn more about these gems, so they assigned us to protect it until they figure out what to do next. But now…" His voice turned bitter, "Those saviors stole our gem. There's no way we can go back and tell the government we failed."

Xavy stood, brushing off his pants. "Ah, I see. Your incompetence has come full circle. Unfortunate, but not my problem."

The ninjas exchanged a mix of angry and defeated glances, but Xavy ignored them. He turned and began walking away, his mind already elsewhere.

Xavy stopped at a secluded spot, hidden by thick foliage. He pulled out a small notebook, flipping through its pages as he muttered to himself.

"This may turn into a problem," he began, his tone contemplative. "Lucius's power is palpable even from here. As fragments of memory, we lack true power or any meaningful evolution to make us stronger. But if I were to fuse with the other fragments…" He trailed off, tapping his pen against the paper.

The idea lingered in his mind like a dangerous gamble. "Our last fusion disrupted the cosmos and semi-reality itself," he continued. "If I attempt it again, it could destabilize space entirely. That risk is too great, even for me."

Closing his notebook, Xavy leaned back against a tree, his gaze drifting to the sky. "Perhaps a different approach is needed. If I can weaken Lucius enough, I'll leave the rest to Yaxoc and his team. Let them clean up the mess."

Reaching into his pocket, Xavy retrieved a sleek, glowing phone. Its screen flickered to life, displaying a series of live events and logs. He swiped through them, his eyes scanning the information with a focused intensity.

"Ogamak and Lucius… They've joined a hunter organization," Xavy muttered, his lips curling into a faint smirk. "How quaint. Two egomaniacs playing by someone else's rules. I wonder how long that'll last."

He tapped into a detailed log, his expression darkening slightly as he read its contents. "Interesting. But no… No spoilers. I'll keep that to myself for now."

The phone's screen dimmed, and Xavy slipped it back into his pocket. He stood still for a moment, his mind racing with strategies and contingencies.

Xavy clenched his fists, feeling a faint, unfamiliar unease. "Lucius is getting closer to his goal," he muttered. "But he's not the only threat. These gems… their power could tip the balance. Yet, if I fuse with my fragments to stop him, I risk undoing the fabric of this reality. Decisions, decisions…"

His voice trailed off as he stared into the distance. "For now, I'll stay in the shadows. Observe. Intervene only when necessary. Lucius won't see me coming, and the saviors will be none the wiser."

With that, Xavy vanished into the forest, his presence leaving no trace except for the lingering tension in the air. The ninjas, still sprawled on the ground, exchanged confused glances.

"Who the hell was that guy?" one of them finally muttered.

"I don't know," another replied. "But I don't think we want to find out."

Far away, the saviors continued their journey, unaware of the layers of intrigue unfolding around them. Xavy watched from the shadows, his mind set on the delicate balance of power he sought to preserve—or perhaps disrupt entirely.

For now, he waited. After all, every great plan required patience, and Xavy was nothing if not a master strategist.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The group found themselves seated in a small café nestled on the outskirts of a bustling town. The chatter of locals and the faint clinking of mugs filled the air. The gang had just finished their latest mission and was finally catching their breath.

"So," Yaxoc began, leaning back in his chair. "We collected the last gem on this continent, right?"

Cherrystone gave a curt nod. "That's right. Now we need to gather the other three gems located in Masoquest. But there's a complication—most of those gems are guarded by tribes."

Yaxocara tilted her head, curious. "Wait, those tribes still exist? I thought they were a thing of the past."

Cherrystone gave her a knowing look. "They're very much alive. Masoquest is a continent steeped in tradition despite its technological and cultural advancements over the last five centuries. From what I know, there are 22 tribes, each with its own customs and history."

Moonlight chimed in, her tone more serious. "We'll have to be cautious, though. Out of those 22 tribes, 15 are known for their aggressive warrior culture. They won't take kindly to outsiders messing with their treasures."

While the others discussed their plans, Yaxoc and Yaxocara sipped their coffee. Or at least, Yaxoc did—Yaxocara, on the other hand, suddenly spat hers out with a dramatic grimace.

"UGH! What is this taste!?" she exclaimed, holding the cup at arm's length as though it had personally offended her.

Yaxoc raised an eyebrow, looking smug. "Honestly, mine has a chocolate flavor. It's not bad."

"But I thought you hated coffee," Moonlight interjected, giving Yaxoc a suspicious side-eye.

"Not anymore," Yaxoc replied with a shrug, taking another sip. "This one's my favorite. So buzz off."

Cherrystone rolled her eyes at the antics but soon turned her attention to Yaxoc. "Yaxoc… may I have the Gem of Justice?"

"Yeah, sure," Yaxoc said casually, pulling the gem from his pocket and handing it over without hesitation.

Cherrystone carefully tucked the gem into her magical pocket. "Thanks," she said, her tone quiet but grateful.

Moonlight broke the momentary silence. "But… if we fuse the gems together, who gets to keep it first?"

"That," Yaxocara admitted, "is a good question."

Cherrystone looked thoughtful. "I plan to entrust this gem to someone worthy. Someone strong enough to handle its power."

Yaxocara narrowed her eyes, noticing the way Cherrystone glanced at Yaxoc. "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" she asked.

Moonlight, confused, frowned. "What are you thinking?"

"I think she's looking at Yaxoc," Yaxocara said, pointing at him, "like she's considering him worthy of wielding the gem."

Cherrystone nodded, confirming the suspicion. "Yaxoc, would you take care of the Gem of Hope if I gave you its essence?"

Yaxoc nearly choked on his coffee, whipping his head toward Cherrystone with wide eyes. "What was that!?"

"Don't say that so loud!" Yaxocara hissed, glaring at him.

Cherrystone remained calm, her voice steady and sincere. "My essence trusts your strength, Yaxoc. It believes you might be the strongest savior of the present day. That's why I'm asking you to take this responsibility. The strongest should wield the most powerful gem, even if they doubt themselves."

Moonlight sighed, rubbing her temples. "He might be the strongest, but he's definitely not the brightest."

"Oh, shush. I'm smart," Yaxoc shot back, crossing his arms defensively.

Moonlight smirked. "Really? What about that exam you failed last month?"

"Don't bring that up," Yaxoc grumbled, shooting her a glare.

Cherrystone, sensing the conversation devolving into pointless bickering, placed enough money on the table to cover their bill. "Let's get moving, team. We've got work to do."

The group stood, gathering their things and heading toward the exit. The café door chimed as they walked out, their next adventure already weighing on their minds. The stakes were high, and the challenges ahead were only growing more complicated.

For now, though, they marched forward, each carrying their unique strengths, quirks, and, of course, a little drama.
