Chapter 48: Adelle's Missionary Path
"What, you say you plan to stay?" Ireya was somewhat surprised.
Adelle nodded, "Servant Columbus, Servant Ivan and most of the Sabbaths and apprentice healers will continue to follow your army to treat the wounded for you."
Miss Rabbit furrowed her brow, "But with so few of you staying behind, what can you really accomplish?"
"I know I can't save everyone, but I'll save as many as I can."
"The problem is that it's not safe around here." The Lady frowned even more, "I just asked a villager, and he said he was robbed a week ago, then again three days ago, and met another group of bandits this morning, which was the seventh time he's been robbed recently."
"You're fine following the army, but once we leave, those bandits will surely return."
"I know, so I've left a hundred Black Dog Guard warriors to protect myself and the villagers, and I've contacted the Church. Lord Mary said she would summon nearby Sabbaths to help."
Only then did Ireya relax her brow a little, knowing well the combat prowess of the Black Dog Guard, and the Double Rest Sect warriors were equipped with the best gear. Trained by Duren, their skills have greatly improved.
Even regular armies have little chance against them, let alone bandits.
With these hundred men, at least Adelle's safety should be assured.
Miss Rabbit thought for a moment and said, "How about I leave you three hundred more?"
Adelle quickly waved her hand, "No, no, a hundred Black Dog Guard is enough. I'm here to save people, not to fight, and..."
"And what?"
"And your guards might scare these villagers."
Ireya understood, as Solomon had gathered many Nobles for a zero-cost purchase, these people were likely already frightened by robberies.
So she nodded, "Alright, protect yourselves well, and if you encounter any danger, come to me for help."
Adelle agreed, and only then did Ireya leave with her men, leaving behind twenty carts of bread and clean water.
Adelle and a dozen Sabbaths didn't bother with putting people into the carts, and started distributing the food on site.
However, after only a short while, they noticed a commotion from behind. They found someone who had finished a small piece of bread was trying to steal others' portions, even hitting someone on the head with a rock, causing it to bleed.
Adelle quickly led her people over. A Black Dog Guard warrior easily subdued the assailant without even drawing his sword.
But Adelle was troubled by the matter; the man's behavior was heinous and nearly fatal.
However, his assault was driven by hunger. Seeing Adelle and others approach, he lacked the energy to escape and desperately stuffed the stolen bread into his mouth.
Adelle sighed and said, "Find a place to lock him up for now. Don't give him food when we distribute again, let him know stealing is wrong."
Then she instructed someone to tend to the injured and gave the person another piece of bread.
Adelle and the Sabbaths continued distributing food, and gradually even villagers from afar approached without much fear.
Upon learning they were from the Double Rest Sect, many people showed delight on their faces.
Clearly, the people here had heard of the renown of the Double Rest Sect.
They knew the Divine Power behind this Church had recently descended and defeated the Wing Tribe and their allies.
For the people on this land, tormented by these invaders, their old beliefs had collapsed. They urgently sought new faith to help them resist the present hardships.
Undoubtedly, the Double Rest Sect was the best choice, especially with the kind-looking female soldier leading the way.
Thus, before Adelle could preach, the surrounding people eagerly inquired about how to join the Double Rest Sect.
They also hoped Adelle could lead them away from here.
Adelle consoled, "You can wait a little longer. Sir Irelia has just led an army to attack the Fertile Point."
"Lord Wild is now also a believer in the Sabbath; once he retakes the Fertile Point, everyone can return to their former lives, or rather, an even better life."
However, as she finished, someone said, "Impossible."
"Why do you say that?" Adelle asked.
"There are bandits everywhere; we can't survive anymore." The statement was met with many agreeing nods.
Before Adelle could respond, a burst of crying was heard, and someone staggered towards them.
It was a ragged farmer, crying as he spoke, "Where is the Double Rest Sect's leader? Please save my wife and daughter!"
"Uncle, where are your wife and daughter, and what illness do they have?" Adelle asked.
"They're not sick, but kidnapped by bandits."
"What?" Adelle was stunned.
"The bandits came to our village this morning for money; we couldn't pay, and many families had members taken."
"Was it in the morning? How many were there?"
"About twenty, all armed, some even in leather armor," the villagers added in unison.
Adelle bit her lip lightly, understanding that without eliminating these bandits, even if she left food, it would eventually be stolen.
The leader of the Black Dog Guard here was a lizard man named Gunn, a rare one willing to learn, having mastered the Universal Language in a year.
Thus, it was only natural for him to become this unit's commander.
Upon hearing the situation, Gunn said, "I'll take some men to track them down; if they frequent this village, they can't be far."
Adelle, knowing these villagers couldn't prosper without dealing with this bandit group, nodded, "Bring more men with you."
Gunn chuckled, "No need, it's just a bunch of bandits. I'll take a small squad, leaving the rest to protect you."
Without waiting for Adelle to reply, he departed with his men.
He left at noon and returned by dusk, most of them with bloodstains, causing Adelle and her people some concern.
Fortunately, Gunn reported that the bloodstains were those of the bandits, with no injuries among his group.
The lizard people of the Gai Gu Swamp had a thousand-year history of banditry, far surpassing these amateurs. Gunn dispatched them with ease.
The dozen managed to defeat nearly thirty enemies and rescued ten hostages, mostly those taken that morning.
The women and their families embraced, crying tears of joy.
But before Gunn could catch his breath, another group approached, all pleading for Adelle's help in finding their relatives.
It was then Adelle realized there wasn't just one bandit group nearby.
She glanced at Gunn, who shrugged, "Rescue takes priority; I'll lead another sweep around here to eliminate any bandits, ensuring safety for us here.
"Please note the extended work hours for us, and we'll take a break when we return."
"Alright, thank you for your hard work," Adelle said.
Gunn added, "You could also see if there are able-bodied men in this village. This afternoon, we found some weapons and armor from that bandit group. If we arm these villagers, even if we leave, they'll have the strength to protect themselves."
