Chapter 128: The Price
Irelia pushed one of the glasses of red wine towards Pearls, "I had previously written you several letters, hoping you would join the Resistance Army, but in the end, you backed off."
Pearls said awkwardly, "I was scared by those Wing Tribe and their army at the time. I admit I'm not as brave as you, nor do I have the protection of Saturday, so I hesitated.
"But now I've realized my mistake, I beg you to give me another chance to serve you."
Pearls knew well that once the Wing Tribe retreated, there would be no one in the western territories who could rival the Lady, fearing that those who had previously sided with Solomon would next be dealt with, so he lowered his stance from the start.
The young woman was also satisfied with Pearls' attitude, but the treatment of those rebellious noble lords had already been discussed by the Resistance Army.
Irelia didn't waste words, and straightforwardly said, "Although we won, we also paid a great price. Especially those lords who chose to stand firmly with me from the beginning, most of their territories have fallen, and some have lost family and friends.
"Moreover, to slow down the Wing Tribe and buy time for the final battle, we also suffered significant losses. We do not reject new allies, but you showed up only after the situation became clear.
"If you think you can just talk and share in the fruits of victory with us, that would be too unfair to those who fought bloody battles to protect their homes."
Pearls looked quite embarrassed, "You... you're right, but I didn't wait until the situation became clear; those Wing Tribe had been blocking Lake City before. As soon as they left, I headed over immediately, and I also brought intelligence that is very important to you and your allies."
This was Pearls' confidence. After discovering the massive death of the Wing Tribe, he rushed to Rock Snow City at the first opportunity.
On the Bratis Continent, there were no mobile phones or telephones; for everyday communication, apart from sending people, one could only rely on pigeons. Coincidentally, pigeons had been dying in large numbers in recent months.
In other words, right now, Pearls was the only one in Rock Snow City holding this crucial intelligence.
And the value of this intelligence was undeniable.
The sooner the Resistance Army knew about the movements of the Wing Tribe, the sooner they could adjust their plans and reclaim lost lands. Moreover, Miss Rabbit could have more leverage when negotiating with nobles like him coming to defect.
Pearls understood the Lady's words. Her request was reasonable; this was war, and the winner's interests naturally came at the expense of the losers.
Pearls just didn't want to be the one losing out. He didn't care about the others.
However, he noticed that after hearing his words, the Lady only smiled slightly, "What is the important intelligence you're planning to present to me? That the Wing Tribe has left your Lake City?"
Pearls shook his head, "No, you probably already know this news. Besides, since I'm here in Rock Snow City, it means those Wing Tribe must no longer be there."
"Then are you trying to tell us that they suffered heavy casualties in Lake City, with possibly fewer than a thousand survivors remaining? Or do you also know that they have already left the western territories last night?"
"Ah?" Pearls looked utterly shocked.
"So, it seems that the latter news you weren't aware of yet." The young woman said calmly.
"How... how did you know about what happened recently in Lake City?" Pearls looked as if he had seen a ghost.
"Saturday told me, and not only that, I also know you were driven out of the castle by those Wing Tribe and had to squeeze into a place called the Golden Ham Inn with your family."
Pearls felt a chill down his spine. He felt as if an invisible eye was watching him.
After a while, he remembered something, "You just said those Wing Tribe have left the western territories?"
"That's right, they have all withdrawn. Do you have anything else you want to tell me?"
Pearls had a bitter smile on his face, "No, nothing more."
Miss Rabbit patted him on the shoulder, and the City Lord of Lake City seemed even more nervous, stammering.
"I... I have no money at hand right now. The wealth accumulated by the Marier family over the years has all been looted by those Wing Tribe."
"I know, I know your current financial situation is not very good... It's said that during the city lockdown, your family was almost starved. Come on, have a drink to calm your nerves first."
The Lady pointed to the wine glass on the table.
Hearing this, Pearls picked up the red wine and drank it all in one go, his neck and ears quickly turning reddish, though it indeed helped calm him a little.
Until he heard the girl's next words, "But don't you still have land?"
"You want Lake City?" Pearls was so shocked he nearly spit out the red wine he had already drunk.
"I'm not that greedy," the Lady said. "I know Lake City was built by your ancestors and left to the descendants of the Marier family. It is the foundation for your survival in the western territories... So, I won't ask you to hand it over."
As she spoke, the young woman somehow pulled out a map of the western territories, spread it on the table, and pointed to a forest outside of Lake City, saying, "I heard your family owns a forest here."
"Yes, that's correct." Pearls' voice was a bit bitter, though he was relieved at heart, thinking that if giving up a forest could cover up his earlier betrayal, it might not be unacceptable.
However, the Lady's finger continued to move on the map, drawing an arc, "From the forest all the way to the northern hills, you have to hand it over, and here, and here and here..."
She pointed to several places, leaving Pearls looking pale, as those were basically the most fertile parts of his land, and the area wasn't small.
Pearls pleaded, "Lady Irelia, that's... that's a bit too much, isn't it? That's almost half of my land."
"That's right, but in terms of value, they are far from comparable to Lake City," the Lady said casually. "Since you want to keep Lake City, you have to compensate more from elsewhere."
"But if so, wouldn't I have to step onto someone else's territory whenever I go out in the future?"
"Then I suggest you get along well with your neighbors." Miss Rabbit said impatiently, "Many nobles have come to join the Resistance Army these days. They basically agreed to the same conditions. If you don't want to agree, go back and mobilize your troops for battle."
