Chapter 9: A Family Reborn
Xu Wei had spent his whole life running away from responsibilities.
Now, somehow, he was waking up every morning in the same house, eating breakfast with the same two kids, and exchanging quiet glances with the same ridiculously serious CEO.
It should have felt suffocating.
Instead, it felt… normal.
Maybe even comfortable.
And that scared the hell out of him.
One afternoon, Xu Wei walked into the living room to find Xinyi asleep on the couch, curled up with a book.
Her tiny frame rose and fell with each steady breath.
He hesitated.
Then, carefully, he grabbed a blanket and draped it over her.
The moment he did, a voice spoke behind him.
"You've changed."
Xu Wei jumped.
He turned to see Yichen standing in the doorway, arms crossed.
Xu Wei smirked, shoving his hands into the pockets of his hoodie. "Took you long enough to admit it."
Yichen stared at him for a moment, unreadable.
Then, finally—he nodded.
It was small. Barely noticeable.
But it was there.
And for the first time, Xu Wei felt like he had actually earned it.
That evening, Xu Wei found Zhihao in his study.
For once, the man wasn't working.
He was standing by the window, staring at the city lights.
Something about the way he stood—shoulders tense, hands resting loosely at his sides—made Xu Wei pause.
Without thinking, he walked up beside him.
"Regretting your life choices?" Xu Wei teased.
Zhihao let out a quiet breath. "I wouldn't say that."
Xu Wei glanced at him. "Then what would you say?"
Zhihao was silent for a long moment.
Then, finally, he turned to look at Xu Wei.
"I think," he said, voice calm but firm, "you're not the same person I married."
Xu Wei's heart stumbled.
He forced a smirk. "Should I be offended?"
Zhihao didn't smile, but his gaze softened.
"No," he said. "You should be proud."
Xu Wei's breath caught.
Something shifted between them in that moment.
Something neither of them were ready to acknowledge.
Not yet.
So, instead of speaking, they stood there—silent, side by side, watching the city together.
And for once, Xu Wei didn't feel like running.
Because this—this messy, complicated, imperfect thing—was starting to feel like home.
Now that Xu Wei has settled into the family, things should be easy.
But they're not.
Because something feels different.
For the first time, Zhihao notices when he isn't around.
For the first time, Xu Wei cares when Zhihao is upset.
And for the first time, the distance between them doesn't feel like distance at all.
Neither of them want to admit what's happening.
But some things are impossible to ignore.
