Chapter 314: Chapter 314: The First Encounter
"He Kui, what should we do?"
Shi He's face was ashen as she watched the battlefield spiraling out of control.
"There's still a chance."
Seeing both the signal and computational power weakening, He Kui abandoned his attempt to control all the light shields, focusing his remaining resources on a single positron cannon at the outermost edge.
Although their computing power had diminished, by narrowing his focus from six positron cannons down to one, He Kui managed to take control of the chosen positron cannon.
"Positron cannon charging sequence initiated, switching to manual control mode."
He Kui's hands moved rapidly over the keyboard as he spoke.
"Shi He, you aim. Su Lei and I will handle any interference."
"But the positron cannon's exterior is shielded with PS armor," Shi He said, her voice tense.
Fully charged PS armor could block positron cannon attacks. Even with the neutron jammers activated, the massive base likely still had ample energy reserves.
"Aim for the cannon's muzzle. They wouldn't have used PS armor in its internal structure."
The main screen in front of them displayed a zigzag trajectory chart.
"The cannon will fire for only three seconds, but if we can hit all the targets, we might avoid total annihilation."
Whatever Creuset's plan was, He Kui wasn't counting on him. Relying on oneself was always the safer bet.
"And one more thing."
He Kui indicated a secondary target positioned at the far end of the final positron cannon's trajectory.
"That's one of their light shield generators."
The plan seemed solid, though risky. Controlling the positron cannon to carry out this precise and prolonged sequence was already a gamble. With only three seconds of firing time and Shi He's skill, they might take down all the cannon turrets. However, the shield generator was a much smaller target, making it hard to hit.
And even if they managed to destroy it, there might be a backup generator. At best, taking out one generator would create a single breach in the shield.
But it was the best they could do for now.
"Ready? Charging is almost complete."
"Leave it to me!"
Shi He's hands tightened around the targeting controls, her face tense with concentration.
"Charging complete in 3… 2… 1."
At He Kui's count, the positron cannon roared to life like an awakened beast, emitting a red-and-white blaze. The beam shot forward silently, colliding with the nearest positron cannon turret, where the formidable PS armor held firm.
Under Shi He's guidance, the positron beam veered off in a zigzag path, twisting and snaking through space like a lively dragon. It traveled across the field, striking each of the five positron cannon muzzles in turn.
A series of violent explosions erupted, the cannon turrets succumbing from within and reduced to smoking ruins. Dust and debris swirled in the void.
"One second left. There's still the shield generator—take the shot."
"Understood!"
At He Kui's command, Shi He carefully aimed the positron cannon at the distant ground structure on the base. As the positron beam began to fade, a small explosion erupted at the target coordinates He Kui had specified.
At the same moment, their link to the enemy base's signal went completely dead.
"Did it work?" Su Lei asked, tense.
"Not sure."
He Kui had barely answered when an alarm blared throughout the ship.
"Rebirth Gundam is charging at us!"
Even before the captain's words, He Kui could see the scene on the shared display: the massive mobile suit blazing a bright red trail, with beams glowing at its front. It hurtled toward them like a meteor, exuding an overwhelming sense of menace with its bulky, powerful frame.
What to do? Not impossible, actually.
His Wave Shield wasn't a light shield system; under a strong magnetic field and high voltage, it could repel electrically charged mobile suits, trapping them and resisting physical impacts. However, it wasn't easy to control at high speeds.
This wasn't like bullfighting, where waving a red flag would lure the opponent forward. Asher Gray was a madman, but he was a highly intelligent one.
Considering Rebirth's limited maneuverability, though, it wasn't entirely unfeasible.
"Deploy."
With no time for further thought, He Kui gave the command, and his GAT-X unit launched from the Nazca-class ship alongside his mobile suit.
Liberator, now armed with a set of ten circular Wave Shields, made its debut on the battlefield. The mobile suit's snow-white body wielded two composite shield systems similar to those on Oracle, painted in a white finish. Each shield was equipped with powerful beam sabers and smaller beam guns, along with the ten gray-white circular Wave Shields on its back, giving it a streamlined appearance.
Compared to his previous fully equipped ZGMF-X10A Strike Freedom, it was like comparing a brawny man with a slender maiden.
Yet this "slender maiden" packed over five times the output of the former.
The moment He Kui launched, the massive thrust of Liberator pressed against him, giving him a tangible sense of power.
It wasn't unpleasant; rather, it felt exhilarating.
After all, operating Aegis remotely never gave him this visceral feeling of acceleration.
Then again, this sensation was best enjoyed sparingly.
With a wry smile, He Kui deftly maneuvered, avoiding the charging Rebirth Gundam.
Illuminated by the light from his thrusters, Liberator radiated with a pure white glow, almost like a divine figure.
"Hehe… Finally, I get to face you in combat, Director He."
The two mobile suits passed each other, and Asher Gray's sinister voice crackled over He Kui's comm.
"I have no desire to fight you."
He Kui replied.
"You don't have a choice, Director He."
Asher dodged incoming beams, closing in on He Kui's position with unrelenting speed.
"His turning ability is limited, and his armor is only standard PS. Coordinate with me, and we'll hold him off."
"Understood."
The teams led by Tiebi and Lica responded.
"Who disarmed your bomb?"
He Kui asked as he skillfully avoided the incoming beams.
With his enhanced capabilities, he no longer feared facing these elite red-clad soldiers.
They were just fellow elites now.
Asher Gray didn't answer, his mobile suit continuing its relentless pursuit.
"Can't get him to talk? Then I'll have to capture him."
"Catch me if you can."
He Kui chose not to respond further.
"Shi He, deploy the Wave Shields."
This wasn't a captured Assault Shroud; it was a custom-made Liberator. He was no longer piloting Aegis remotely.
Every detail of the battlefield was now displayed in real-time, allowing him to maximize his combat capabilities.
"Understood!"
With He Kui's command, Shi He's focus sharpened. Back in the field after so long, her skills hadn't dulled.
With perfect ease, the full ten-set Wave Shield system detached and deployed under her control.
Four of the units formed a pink barrier in front of Liberator.
Asher's mobile suit slammed into the shield, unable to penetrate.
At the same time, He Kui maneuvered the remaining six Wave Shields to encircle Rebirth Gundam from behind.
Just as the tr
ap was about to close, an urgent alarm sounded from within He Kui's cockpit.
"Twelve Daggers locked on from behind!"
Su Lei's voice was tense.
"Twelve…"
