When the Doctor Uses A Hack

Chapter 1282: Night Shift Guardian

The facilities at the capital's emergency center are quite comprehensive.

For example, the vending machines in the hallways.

The original intent of the owner was to make money off of family members of the patients. Later, they realized… it was much easier to make money from the doctors.

As a result, on the brink of bankruptcy, the owner had a stroke of genius and shifted their target audience to this group of doctors who were too busy to eat proper meals.

Aside from sodas, coffee, and Red Bull, the owner added some fresh meals like "braised pork rice," "fried rice," "chicken wraps," and "hamburgers."

And…

The key point is that this has become the highlight of the doctors' day.

Everyone looks forward to seeing what new snacks the vending machines have stocked!

Chen Cang found that even though he was already a seasoned specialist for health clinics, he still couldn't escape night shifts.

In fact…

When Chen Cang worked the night shift, it was busier than anyone else's.

To put it romantically: night shifts and the emergency room are a match made in heaven!

The emergency department is the ultimate training ground for doctors, far more intense than any other department.

If working in a regular department trains you like a soldier, then working in emergency trains you to be a special forces commando.

In moments of crisis or disaster, emergency room doctors are always the first to charge ahead.

It's not because they have steel-like wills or bodies, but because they are more skilled at saving lives.

By the time Chen Cang finished his tasks, it was already one o'clock in the morning.

Old Ma was hungry.

No kidding!

In order to worm his way into becoming Chen Cang's kid's godfather, Old Ma was shamelessly persistent about not going home unless Chen Cang agreed.

This was the first time Chen Cang realized just how thick-skinned Old Ma could be.

"You don't have kids of your own?!" Chen Cang asked, speechless.

Old Ma nodded seriously, leaned in, and whispered, "I already got my wife to have three. All of them are daughters!"

This revelation unexpectedly lifted Chen Cang's spirits.

"How can you be so sure I'll have a son?"

Old Ma let out a cold laugh, "You're so broke, of course you'll have a son."

This made Chen Cang so angry he wanted to punch someone!

Some might ask if the emergency room feels eerie late at night, especially after midnight.

Chen Cang would outright reply that the hallways don't feel creepy at all past midnight, but his stomach definitely does—it always craves food.

That's also why emergency doctors tend to put on weight by the time they hit their forties.

Currently, all that's available outside is barbecue and fried rice, and delivery fees are steep.

Chen Cang started reminiscing about Anyang.

Ah, the capital!

Everything is great here—except for how expensive it is!

In truth, Chen Cang has quite a bit of money.

And Old Ma is pretty well-off too.

But when the two exchanged a look, they suddenly both felt reluctant to spend any.

So naturally, the vending machine snacks became a much better option.

The vending machines in the emergency department are always the quickest to clear out. They were nearly empty.

Chen Cang sighed in disappointment, glanced at Old Ma, and noticed the guy had disappeared without a trace.

When he saw Old Ma again, Chen Cang noticed he was carrying an armful of hamburgers and chicken wraps.

Grinning like mad, Old Ma brought them back to the emergency room.

Chen Cang froze: "Where did you get all this food?"

Old Ma smirked, "I'll treat you to dinner, but you have to let me be your son's godfather."

Chen Cang thought about it—it's not like his son could only have one godfather.

Besides… as the saying goes, having more godfathers means more connections. That's the reason so many young women were crazy about finding them.

After hesitating for three seconds, Chen Cang decided to sell out for the sake of those chicken wraps and burgers.

"Deal!"

Thus, Old Ma opened up to him and began sharing his survival strategies for working night shifts in the emergency room without starving.

Apparently, the breast surgery department has a lot of female staff who don't like eating late-night snacks. As a result, their workspace became a haven for small meals, often raided by on-call doctors.

Chen Cang gained some valuable insights.

With the intent of burning bridges immediately, he decided to forget about this by the time he woke up.

Meanwhile, Old Ma felt like he and Chen Cang were now family.

He even recommended an app to Chen Cang.

"Cang Er, I've decided to be upfront with you and share a gem!"

Chen Cang grew curious: "What kind of gem?"

With a mysterious air, Old Ma opened the app on his phone and showed it to Chen Cang.

"What is this?"

At this moment, Old Ma's expression suddenly became serious and solemn.

Chen Cang's eyes sparkled: "Teachers?"

Old Ma shot him a disdainful look but didn't say anything.

Instead, he focused on opening the app.

Soon, Chen Cang saw that the app was full of photos. Old Ma whispered quietly:

"This is my own design—Night Shift Guardian!"

When Chen Cang looked at the images, his eyes lit up.

It wasn't teachers at all! It was Usagi Tsukino dressed in a sailor uniform, white stockings, and a super short skirt...

Definitely not teachers!

Chen Cang shot Old Ma a scornful look.

But as he looked closer, something clicked in his mind and made him take the whole thing seriously.

"Isn't this literally Usagi Tsukino?!"

Old Ma shook his head earnestly: "No, it's Night Shift Guardian."

Night Shift Guardian, my foot.

Good thing you didn't choose Conan.

Chen Cang mulled it over, then sighed deeply, staring at the sailor-suited hero. His thoughts echoed Usagi Tsukino's signature phrase: "In the name of the moon, I'll punish you!"

Chen Cang suddenly felt that this godfather business was extremely unreliable.

Pfft!

Childish!

Ten minutes later, Chen Cang realized Old Ma didn't even recognize the Sailor Scouts. With no choice, he pulled up the anime for him.

After finishing it, Old Ma remained silent for a long time.

Chen Cang noticed his belief system had completely collapsed, and he started to feel a bit bad for him.

"What do you want to eat?"

Old Ma replied, "Fine, something expensive!"

Chen Cang thought about it, stuffed the hamburgers in the fridge, and ordered delivery.

Yang Jie and Xiao Ke were there, so Chen Cang ordered extra.

The emergency department at the Provincial Second Hospital is calm at night, but it's different here. The emergency room is brightly lit, as busy as daytime, bustling with on-call doctors, overtime workers, and those who couldn't bear to go home.

At least it wasn't scary.

Nighttime delivery fees are always pricier. After all, who wants to work late into the night unless they really need the money?

Paying extra delivery fees was acceptable to Chen Cang.

Of course, that's assuming the fees actually go to the delivery workers.

Chen Cang ordered fried rice and barbecue.

That's all he could order anyway.

He ordered quite a bit—it cost over three hundred.

About thirty minutes later, just as Chen Cang was starting to nod off, the delivery worker arrived.

That speed was pretty impressive, given the distance and time needed for preparation—thirty minutes wasn't bad at all.

The worker was young and smiled brightly when he saw Chen Cang: "Hello, here's your delivery."

Chen Cang returned the smile and handed him the Red Bull he was holding. "You got here fast, huh?"

The worker, probably in his early twenties, beamed warmly.

"There aren't many cars on the road at night. Thanks, doctor—you should go eat before it gets cold. You work much harder than we do!"

Just as he refused the drink, however, something made Chen Cang frown.

"What happened to your fingers? Come clean them here first."

The worker's expression changed as he quickly answered, "Sorry, my hands are clean."
