Chapter 38: I found my proof
I looked at student Wong, to tell him I was ready to help him. He joined me with the 2nd student who passed the exam who asked me to call him student Ang and the question they had, it was in math.
To be fair, it was one that no student would learn in advanced classes. It was maybe beginner or intermediate level for array making. There was a reason why the achievement award was given only every few decades.
I shared the tea with both of them. Took some ink and paper and started explaining what was a cartesian plane, how to graph with a single variable equation then moved to two variable ones - last one being the purpose of the exam’s question -
An hour later, I saw they lost me along the way so I suggested they try to do some exercises on their own and come ask me if they had issues. I created 5 simple cartesian coordinates to plot, 5 single variable equations and 3 double variable ones. Then, I put the answers on the back of the same paper and gave it to them.
Whether they decide to solve or not the exercises was not my problem. I tried to explain the exam’s question as simply as possible but it was like explaining 5th grader linear equations. It could not be done in one hour. They thanked me with subdued voices and went back to their desk. I hoped they did not lose motivation.
I finished my tea, left the teapot on the table in case someone wanted to try my green tea, then went back to my desk. I took out the notes I took for the weather’s dates and initial signals and continued with my reading…
By the time self study finished, I felt that I was close to finding a pattern to different severe weather’s prediction, not only the freezing winter. It was like they were all connected somehow. As to not lose that feeling, I sent a talisman message to aunt Yan to tell her I would be late and planned to stay longer at school to study. Then I stood up planning to go to the library to find the remaining volumes.
“Looking for these?” Asked teacher Wei while putting volume 5 and 6 of the city’s history on my desk. My eyes brightened, teacher Wei deserved a five stars review.
“Thank you teacher Wei!” When I looked around, I saw that I was the only student left so I took the books, planning to find another place to continue with my research so as to not disturb teacher Wei.
“You can stay here. Some older students are coming for individual training. When they come, I will put a sound and protection barrier around them. You will not be disturbed”
I sat down right away and opened the 5th volume smiling.
...
Some time later, scribbled papers were scattered on my desk and around it
After finishing the 6th volume I was sure that I had the pattern figured out on the 5th volume. I predicted a few severe weathers from that and used the 6th volume to double check. I was speechless, not only freezing winter but most severe flooding, droughts and hail storms could be predicted by one mathematical equation that could be created within hours! How many lives could have been saved in the last few thousands years if it was found out sooner?
“Are you done, student Bai?” Asked teacher Wei after she saw me motionless for at least 10 minutes. I did not know what to say, I was shocked and my mind was blank.
No, it was running like a speeding car on a field track … I don’t know what I was thinking anymore…
“Looks like not yet. Just continue” She said
“No. No, I am done. Sorry for keeping you this late” I said but did not move.
My mind turned to another direction and I was wondering now if this world was really just a book. In my second life, meteorologists could predict the weather based on past data, simulations, satellites and measurement tools. Sometimes additional known historical weather cycles would let them predict a relatively colder, warmer or rainier season on a specific location. They had to use hundreds if not thousands of variables with different simulators to predict the weather but it was not as accurate as this pattern.
Right now, I thought…No, I was sure with the 6th volume that I could predict the next severe weathers - but not normal ones or cultivator made ones - maybe even for the next few centuries if not thousands of years. I could do it without measurement tools or simulators. Just using historical data was enough to find a pattern. This was too simple. So simple that it could only be done in a book or a simulation game…or maybe even man made - or cultivator made or a higher being made - someone or something creating these catastrophes for whatever reasons.
Another thought popped out of my mind. I used my perfect memory recall to re-read the 6 volumes in minutes then took a piece of paper and wrote some dates. Previously, I didn't add the dates of the beast horde's attacks. The books mentioned all beasts attacks happening in AnNan and others on nearby cities - cities that either still exist or do not anymore -
This was added in history books because other cities' attacks affected AnNan one way or the other but mostly contributed in law, defense, or even city lord’s change. I could not find a complete pattern to the beasts horde yet. Most likely because not all beast hordes were written down in further areas. More data from other cities was needed for that but this was not my priority.
For now, I could not predict the next beast horde attack and where it would be but extreme weather would most likely happen a few months to a year earlier or after the attacks. That was the 2nd explanation I could give for the freezing weather - on top of the weather pattern -
On the other hand, extreme weather did not mean a beast horde was coming into the area. Not with the information I had so far.
