Chapter 599: Are These Guys In A Drama?
Should have expected something like this to happen…
The fact that Matsumoto was prepared to intervene showed that Takehashi was also expecting something like this to happen but she definitely did not think that they would have someone who was using a cloaking mod to ambush her.
I went ahead to throw the grenades I had prepared ahead of time at the group of pirates, the explosion blowing a number of them up while throwing up a dust cloud to block us from view.
They couldn't fire now since that might also run the risk of shooting Helen as well so that bought us some time for now since we didn't have that problem and started firing into the smoke cloud instead.
There were cries of pain before someone shouted to take cover and they must have either moved back behind the corridor or huddled behind their Power Armoured units to protect themselves since the screams stopped.
Despite all that happening near her, Takehashi did not show any signs that she noticed, though the fact that a sword was currently stuck in her abdomen might be the reason why.
To her credit, despite being stabbed twice, the Pirate Lord simply gritted her teeth through the pain and grabbed both the throat and the wrist of her assailant, preventing him from escaping.
The pirate tried to pull back, only to realise he couldn't before Takehashi literally ripped his throat out with her bare hand before kicking him away.
Holy crap… That's some insane grip strength she has there…
Helen had recovered by then and tried to lunge towards her, aiming to finish the job.
But even with the sword still stuck in her abdomen, she still managed to backstep away from Helen to avoid her attack.
Helen didn't give up and tried to lunge at the Pirate Lord, only to receive a kick in her abdomen to send her skidding away.
"You!! How much more do you want to take from me before you are satisfied?!" Helen screamed.
Takehashi pressed against her wound to put pressure on it, "I'm pretty sure we gave you everything you wanted. What did I even take from you?"
"This!! I should have been the next Pirate Lord! The next Pirate Sovereign even! Since you have no desire to take up the position, why can't you just die quietly?!"
Geez woman… Talk about being entitled… Did you think that you deserve that spot just because you think so or something? Don't tell me the next thing you want is Matsumoto or something?
Then again, I suppose such a mentality is normal for a pirate?
Takehashi jerked her chin at her, "You can't even honour a duel with me and you think you deserve this?"
"Hahahaha! A pirate and yet you still talk about honour?! I will show you what it means to be a pirate!!"
She stuck out her hand towards the smoke cloud and her pistols flew out from within to land in her hands.
Takehashi looked like she wanted to dash forward to close the distance but she suddenly sank to her knees, most likely from the pain of her wounds.
Helen smirked and I was trying to shift my aim towards her when Matsumoto moved to stand in front of Takehashi, his blades slashing out in front of him to deflect her shots away.
"My lord! You have to leave!!"
"And… Ugghh… Let you all have the glory? Not a chance…"
The smoke cloud finally cleared and Helen's pirates turned their weapons towards us again.
We made use of the cylinders as cover but Takehashi and Matsumoto were both out in the open and devoid of any cover.
The man quickly picked up the Pirate Lord in his arms and made a dash towards us while we tried to cover him.
Gunshots rang out from both sides and I was afraid that the containers would get shattered but surprisingly, it seems like they were all bullet proof.
Right then, Matsumoto let out a cry as he stumbled behind one of the containers, his shields shattering from a shot that pierced through both the shield and his leg.
He fell in front of us and I just managed to reach out my hands to catch Takehashi before she fell onto the ground.
The sword was still stuck in her abdomen and she didn't seem like she would be able to keep herself conscious much longer.
Still, the pirates were still firing in our direction and I had to toss another grenade at them which made them run for cover before it exploded.
We then used that chance to move towards the back of the hall, hoping that there might be another door or something since this was the direction that the androids had run off to.
Takehashi was still in my arms while another pirate threw one of Matsumoto's arms over his shoulder and half carried him along.
Sure enough, there was a single door at the far corner but we were forced to take cover again as gunshots whizzed past us, clearly intent on stopping us from escaping.
Since we were behind cover now…
"Mara?" I called out, turning to our resident doctor.
She gestured that I should lay her on the ground and I did so, making sure not to push the sword deeper inside her.
Mara then brought out some kind of bottle before she unceremoniously yanked out the sword from the Pirate Lord's abdomen, causing her to let out a scream of pain.
She then quickly sprayed the contents of the bottle in the wound before moving to her other wounds, covering them up with some kind of white foam.
"You won't bleed out, but you won't be able to move much with this on you, let alone fight in your condition," Mara explained before moving to Matsumoto to do the same.
Surprisingly he held out his hand to stop her, "No… There's no need to use that on me… This is the end of the line for me."
Takehashi turned to him and glared, "What are you talking about? Why are you already killing yourself off?!"
Matsumoto fell on a knee, "My lord… I have followed you ever since the start when you had just been named as the commander of our unit. I was supposed to die back during that failed raid but you were the one who pulled me back and saved me."
"Well no shit? Do you think… Ugghhh… Do you think I will let my subordinates die if I can help it?"
Matsumoto shook his head, "You have already sacrificed so much for everyone else, my lord… Even this Pirate Hoard was something you wanted to claim to give sanctuary to all of us who had been betrayed by our superiors… We never needed something like this, my lord. You were our sanctuary."
I thought this might be a touching moment or something but Takehashi scowled at him, "Shut the fuck up, Matsumoto. Don't give me that self sacrifice bullshit now!"
Matsumoto sighed, "My lord… You are destined for great things… And I wish that I could be there to see it… But it is not my fate to stand beside you for that."
"What bullshit are you spouting now, Matsumoto?! Don't tell me it's the… Unnggh… The die with honour bullshit that you keep spouting?!"
"It is a tradition of my family's… We either die on the battlefield with honour, or we will never see our ancestors."
"That's a stupid belief your family has…"
"Perhaps… But I won't get another chance like this ever again… Besides… You have already found your place, haven't you?"
"Tch… What's the point of finding the Pirate Hoard if I'm the only one who gets to enjoy it?"
Matsumoto shook his head, "That's not what I'm talking about… You could never really find someone who you would stand behind, could you? And yet, now--"
"Matsumoto…" Takehashi interrupted. "You can go and die now."
The bearded man gave her a wry smile, "As my lord commands. Please take care of yourself, my lord."
"I should be saying that to you. Don't waste your death, got it?"
"I don't plan to."
I cleared my throat, "Err… I have been keeping quiet all this while but what if I said that I have a way for us to get out of here without anyone on our side dying?"
Surprisingly, Matsumoto scowled at me, "Do not take this from me, Miss Tera. I have already made up my mind for this and there will not be a better chance for me. As for my lord… I will leave her in your care now."
Huh? Why the hell should I take care of her? I was already thinking about getting the hell out of here as soon as I can.
I looked in the direction of the remaining pirates on Takehashi's side, "What about them?"
Matsumoto turned to them, "Everyone… It has been an honour… But now our lord is faced with these traitors who are after her life. The one who had given us a place to stay and live after those government dogs hung us out to dry. What say you we give one last hurrah and stick it to those bastards?"
"Hurrah!!"
Wait, seriously? They're just going to go the self sacrifice route?
Well… Not like I really care about them anyway so go ahead I guess?
