Chapter 587: They Started Arming Them
We did a quick weapons check before we moved towards the door at the end which should bring us into the facility's central security hub.
All of us advanced towards the door and we prepared ourselves for a potential ambush up ahead.
The door was closed but the blinking light over head meant that the door had power so we should be able to open it without using force.
Everyone got into position with the Pirate Lord and myself standing at the front, both of us using our Power Armour to protect the people behind us.
We made sure everyone was ready before the pirate at the end activated the console to open the door.
The door behind us suddenly slammed shut and I almost thought it was another trap when a voice started speaking from the speakers overhead.
"Beginning decontamination sequence. Please hold."
Right… This was a decontamination chamber after all so I guess this was just something it needs to do before opening the doors.
Sparks appeared near the ceiling and the lights flickered on before shutting off again which was followed by a loud hissing sound, no doubt the system failing after having been neglected for so long.
There was another hiss before the door in front of us started to slide open.
We raised our guns, ready to fire them the moment we saw any hostiles on the other side.
And when the door slid past me, I was greeted by the sight of… A completely empty room.
Huh… Did whoever smoked that cigarette not pass through here?
We scanned the place with our flashlight and the room was definitely empty.
Very cautiously, we entered the room.
The moment we took one step inside, the lights inside turned on, illuminating the entire room.
Oh… So there's power in this part of the facility.
Turns out, the 'Central Security Hub' was a corridor with three other rooms to either side and a large room to the front.
The rooms on either side seem to be a command room and an armoury so obviously we went to look at the armoury to see if there were any weapons worth taking in there.
Unfortunately, the place had already been ransacked and there was nothing left. The weapons lockers were completely broken into and even the computer terminals here were ripped out for some reason.
But despite all that… The thick layer of dust over everything meant that this place was ransacked a long time ago so it wasn't a recent event.
When we turned our attention back to the corridor however… We could see a mass of footprints in the dust that was leading deeper into and also out of the facility.
This place has seen quite a lot of activity recently, I see…
Peeking into the command room, it looked like all the computer terminals had also been disassembled here so we didn't bother going in there and proceeded forward instead.
The next room was another security checkpoint and I wondered just what they were doing here that needed so many checkpoints?
Then again… They had that decontamination room so maybe it had something to do with chemicals, living organisms or something along those lines.
Unlike the other security checkpoints that we passed through however, this security checkpoint still had power and the scanners were still functional.
I'm pretty sure if we were to try and walk through those scanners, we might trigger an alarm and probably activate their defenses or something.
"Are we just going to walk through that?" The Pirate Lord asked, looking down at me.
"Well… It might trigger some kind of alarm if we do… Maybe it might cause the entire facility to lock down? Which is something we definitely do not want…"
"Then we'll have to disable it then… Can you hack it or something? You seem to be really good at that."
I looked around before spotting a console near the scanner, which made me wonder why everything else in the security hub was disassembled but the security checkpoints remained intact?
I probably wouldn't know for sure either so I just went over to the console and connected my Codex to it.
After a quick hack, I now had access to the security checkpoint's systems so it was a simple thing for me to just look for the command to shut it down and all the machines powered down.
There, now we should be able to pass through without triggering any--
The machines hummed back to life again.
Eh?
Did I mistakenly turn it back on again?
I tapped on the command to turn it off and the machines all shut down once more.
Only a few seconds passed before all of them came back online once again.
I frowned and turned to the others, "Seems like there's some hidden protocol or something that is preventing it from shutting it down completely…"
The Pirate Lord nodded, "Do it again."
I wasn't sure if that would make any difference but I did it anyway.
As soon as the machines powered down, the Pirate Lord immediately raised his arm and shot at the scanners, the explosive round blasting the entire machine to bits and destroying it.
There was a loud grinding sound before sparks exploded from the exposed wiring as the machine tried to turn on again only to fail before sputtering and powering back down.
I guess… That's one way to deal with it?
The Pirate Lord strode through the checkpoint confidently and nothing happened so everyone else followed after him.
After the checkpoint was another door which we passed through to get to another large hall, this one looking like it would be used for some kind of meeting with the large screen at the front and a semicircular seating surrounding it.
Odd… There should be another path forward but looking around the meeting hall, there was no other door aside for the one that we had just passed through.
The Pirate Lord also realised that and turned to me, prompting me to project the map once again into the air.
Hmm… There's nothing wrong… The map does show that there should be another path leading from this meeting hall to continue onwards but there's no door here?
Right then, the door behind us slammed shut before another metal, armoured door came smashing down in front of it, locking us in here.
The wall with the screen then started lowering down to disappear into the ground, revealing a path behind it.
Ha! I knew it! The map wasn't--
BANG!
The pirate that had been standing at the side suddenly stumbled back as his shield flared, protecting him from being shot in the head.
The wall lowered further to reveal several people lined up along the corridor, all of them holding weapons in their hands that were pointed at us.
There were only like a dozen of them so we still outnumbered them, that's why we weren't that concerned as all of us simply returned fire.
Kinetic rounds and energy lasers flew from our side to pepper the group of attackers full of holes before any of them could fire another shot.
Curiously, none of them had any shields so our bullets quite literally tore through them in an instant and they turned into corpses really quickly.
The reason why became obvious as we got closer and realised from the exposed machinery that these weren't living people but androids once again.
"They're arming the androids now?" One of the pirates muttered.
Another one huffed, "Tch… This wouldn't make much difference. You already saw how stupid they are. They didn't even have shields. As long as we--"
The pirate that was speaking suddenly stopped and I got curious so I turned to see if he saw something that made him stop talking halfway.
What I saw was him standing absolutely still and what looked like blood floating in front of his head.
Eh?
"Switch to thermal vision!" I quickly cried out.
My view changed and I was now seeing a figure standing behind the pirate with his hand thrust through the pirate's head.
Fuck!
"They're using cloaking tech!" I warned everyone, firing a shot at the android behind the pirate with my shotgun.
The pellets blew the android's head open and the invisibility deactivated, revealing the robot that was still flying through the air from being blasted by my shotgun to crash into the wall.
Another pirate gurgled with his chest exploding open, no doubt from another android attacking him from behind.
His comrade immediately started shooting at the space behind the dead pirate, blasting another invisible android to shreds.
The entire hall then came alive as we started shooting around us, our thermal vision revealing at least a dozen androids had been hiding in the room with us the entire time.
Seeing that they had been revealed, they started charging towards us and three more pirates fell before we could shoot them down.
Soon enough, the walls of the hall were riddled with bullet holes and the invisible androids were all laying on the ground, deactivated.
Great… Not only do they have androids that can shoot, they have invisible ones as well…
What's next?! Are they going to start sending out androids that can transform too?!
Just how many of them do they have?!
