Chapter 12: Chapter 12 Xiao Zhi and I Are Family
Zheng Qiuyue's face flushed red as soon as she heard it. She glanced at Xia Shuyuan subconsciously and said to Xia Zhi, "Your mother's dowry is all here. As for the stocks you mentioned, I've never seen them."
"You won't admit it, huh?" Xia Zhi said calmly and with a chuckle, "No matter, I will go consult with a lawyer tomorrow and find out if it's against the law to hoard someone else's inheritance like this."
Before, she had been powerless, without money or influence, and even if she had an inventory, she couldn't fight against those stronger than her. But now things were different; she had He Jinnan backing her, and she felt there was nothing to be afraid of.
Zheng Qiuyue was still vehemently denying it: "These are the only things I have, and I've given them all to you now. I don't know about the other things you're mentioning!"
Xia Shuyuan frowned, glanced at his wife, then turned to his daughter with a placating smile, "Xiao Zhi, we are family, and we can discuss everything. Your Aunt Yue is getting on in years; perhaps she forgot. We will search thoroughly again later, and definitely won't owe you anything."
Xia Zhi looked at her father, who was groveling before her, feeling contempt but also a sense of sorrow.
"You all may leave now," she dismissed them.
Xia Shuyuan stayed put, probing, "As for the company's affairs, when do you think you could speak to He Jinnan about them?"
Xia Zhi stared at her father, her gaze inscrutable, yet she spoke directly, "That's your issue. You should figure it out on your own; it has nothing to do with me."
"What?" Xia Shuyuan stared at her in shock, as if he had misunderstood, and asked incredulously, "You're saying it has nothing to do with you?"
Zheng Qiuyue lost her patience and snapped, "Xia Zhi, don't go too far! We've returned your dowry, and now we're asking you for this one thing, and you're saying it's none of your business? Are you playing us for fools?"
Xia Shuyuan's expression darkened too, but he still restrained his anger, pulled Zheng Qiuyue behind him, and said to Xia Zhi, "Even if we had some unpleasantness between us before, blood is thicker than water. Are you really so heartless that you can watch your dad's life work be destroyed?"
"Blood is thicker than water? When you wanted me to sleep with Mr. Wang, did you think about how blood is thicker than water?" Xia Zhi retorted coldly, "From now on, let's not bother each other anymore, that's it."
"Xia Zhi!" Xia Shuyuan lost his patience and said coldly, "After all, we raised you. Asking you to do something is not unreasonable; it's also contributing to the family, you shouldn't feel aggrieved!"
See, are these the words of a human being? Xia Zhi felt indignant for her mother at this moment – how had such a good girl ended up marrying such a cold and inhuman man?
Xia Zhi couldn't be bothered to argue anymore, her anger rising as she tried to push them out.
Their arguing had, after all, brought He Jinnan out from his study.
Seeing his son-in-law come out, Xia Shuyuan dashed over, eagerly saying, "Son-in-law, you've come out. There's something I would like to discuss with you."
He Jinnan frowned, looking at him sidelong with a scoff, "That 'dad' of yours rolls off the tongue quite smoothly, doesn't it? Have I acknowledged it?"
Xia Shuyuan's face showed embarrassment, yet he still shamelessly said, "It's a matter of time, a matter of time."
Xia Zhi was set to pull her father away, but unexpectedly, the hand she'd just extended was grasped by He Jinnan and held in his palm.
As he sat her back down on the sofa, he looked at Xia Shuyuan with a smile that was not quite a smile and said, "You want to talk with me about your mother-in-law's dowry? What belongs to whom should be returned accordingly. Even children understand this principle—don't two people well past their prime get it? Do you really need to discuss this with me?"
"Of course, it should be returned," Xia Shuyuan said hastily, nodding vigorously, "It's just that, the thing I wanted to discuss with you was something else."
"Oh? Something else?" He Jinnan let out a cold laugh, his gaze cutting across Xia Shuyuan like a knife, derisively saying, "Do you think that because I married Xia Zhi, you can speak to me as equals? Do you really think that you have that right?"
Xia Shuyuan clenched his back teeth, forcing the words through the gap: "Son-in-law, now that you and Xia Zhi are registered, I'm your father-in-law, right? There's no need for our family to speak as outsiders."
"You're mistaken. Now it's Xia Zhi and I who are family, and you are the outsiders."
With a stern face, He Jinnan stood up, taking Xia Zhi with him, and coldly addressed Xia Shuyuan and Zheng Qiuyue, "I have said before, try to minimize contact with us in the future, unless there's a major issue, don't reach out."
"Mr. He..." Xia Shuyuan didn't dare to call him son-in-law anymore to anger him, smartly changing his address, yet he still couldn't give up and wanted to try his luck again.
He Jinnan looked at him with a threatening gaze, "If you want the downfall of your company to speed up, then keep talking here."
Zheng Qiuyue pulled at her husband's sleeve, and with a forced smile on her face, she said to He Jinnan, "Mr. He, we'll take your words to heart. Xiao Zhi is in your hands, we are at ease. We'll leave you in peace now, no need to see us out, please stay."
Watching the couple leave in disarray, Xia Zhi heaved a sigh of relief, tiredly plopping down on the sofa.
"If you couldn't handle it, why didn't you call me? Look how upset you are," He Jinnan said, raising his hand to pat her head.
Xia Zhi looked at him, "I was really worried you would agree to his request, I'm glad you didn't."
"I remember you telling me that no matter what they say, I shouldn't agree."
Hearing this, Xia Zhi smiled and teased, "Sounds like a good baby."
He Jinnan also smiled, unconcerned, glanced at the time, and said, "Go rest, don't you still have work tomorrow?"
"Mhm, you should rest early too."
Xia Zhi looked at him gratefully, admitting to herself that this handsome man truly had a charm that drew people in step by step; her fondness for him grew a little more.
She walked towards the room, then suddenly heard him call her from behind, "Xiao Zhi."
"Ah?" She turned around, her heart racing at the sound of "Xiao Zhi."
He Jinnan said, "My elder brother is returning from a business trip tomorrow and found out I got married. He's specially arranged a gathering in the evening, we'll go together after work."
Indeed, the day they had gone back to the old house, his brother hadn't been there. Now that he was back, it was proper to meet him.
"Okay, I got it," she cheerfully agreed.
"I'll take you to work tomorrow morning and pick you up after work."
"Okay," Xia Zhi responded with another sweet smile.
"Alright then, go sleep," He Jinnan said before retreating back into his study.
Xia Zhi returned to her room, sat on the bed, and took out her mother's dowry, looking through it one by one, her heart filled with mixed emotions as she remembered her mother.
The next evening, after work, Xia Zhi quickly came out of the building and immediately saw the waiting Maybach at the entrance. She was as happy as a little bunny, hopping and trotting over to get into the car.
As the car slowly took to the road, Xia Zhi asked, "Which restaurant did you book?"
"Zi Guang Garden," He Jinnan replied.
Xia Zhi took out a small mirror to touch up her makeup, then adjusted her clothes, turning slightly to ask, "He Jinnan, do I look decent and proper now?"
He Jinnan looked at her with a carefree gaze, "Very proper, not bad."
Xia Zhi smiled, tilting her head slightly, "Then that's good."
