Chapter 82: Chapter 80: The Perfect Secondary Heart, Warp Corruption
The surgery officially began.
The legion's Apothecary skillfully injected the boy with anesthetics, putting him into a deep sleep, and then opened up his chest cavity with a sharp scalpel, hooking him up to various life-support machines.
The first step in the Astartes transformation was the implantation of the Secondary Heart.
Within the process of Astartes surgical modification, this step was considered the simplest and also the safest.
But for Magnus's gene-progeny, this procedure was extremely dangerous.
Back when they were still on Holy Terra, the Thousand Sons' gene modifications had been just like any other Space Marine's, with no problems at all.
They had even participated in suppressing a rebellion on Terra.
For reasons unknown, as the Great Crusade went on, all kinds of issues began to appear with the Thousand Sons' gene-seed.
At first, it was flesh mutations; then, the success rate of new initiates plummeted, as if a curse had fallen upon this legion.
During the Astartes modification, Axis kept his hand on the boy's forehead, continuously channeling Ki into him.
Soon, the Secondary Heart was placed inside, connected to the rest of the Neophyte's circulatory and pulmonary systems near the original heart.
It immediately began to alter the boy's body.
The boy's body trembled violently.
The legion's Apothecary watched the monitoring panel with bated breath, afraid that any mishap would mean the loss of yet another recruit.
The results, however, were normal.
With the aid of Axis's Ki, the mysterious mutation seemed to have vanished.
"Look! Look at the Secondary Heart, it's rough texture has completely changed!" At that moment, a nearby Apothecary exclaimed.
The Secondary Heart, which had originally rough, was now, after being cleansed by Axis's Ki, and connected to the Neophyte, had transformed into perfect heart, resembling human heart a little more.
"This is the perfect state of the gene-seed! It's only ever been seen in the earliest cultivated samples," Ahriman, who stood to the side, said.
He had received his Astartes modification surgery on Holy Terra, nearly a century ago.
As one of the first Astartes to undergo the procedure, he vividly remembered what the Emperor's original Secondary Heart looked like.
This was exact perfect form.
For some reason, subsequent gene-seeds started developing the strange texture, failing the implantation process.
Fortunately, these mutations hadn't caused the surgery to fail 100%, and the legions had continued to produce Astartes.
Such near-perfect Secondary Heart hadn't appeared since, not even when magnus himself had overseen the process, his own purest gene seed was used in cultivation.
It seemed as though only the first of Secondary Heart, cultivated with the gene-seed at the moment of the Primarch's birth, could produce this kind of perfect result.
The now perfect Secondary Heart was a 100% match for the boy.
There seem to be no danger at all, and his vital signs quickly stabilized.
The Apothecaries worked quickly to close the incision.
The first surgery of the day was complete; once this recruit adapted, the next phases of the Astartes transformation could begin.
"This is incredible, Axis! My prophecy was right, you really can help me! Quickly, let's start with the next recruit. We need to verify the results!" Magnus said excitedly.
Soon, the second, third, and fourth recruits were brought in, some only ten years old, others fourteen.
Each time, Axis would use Ki to cleanse their bodies and Secondary Hearts.
The Secondary Hearts without any exceptions, turned to their perfect form once it was implanted, and the Ki circlated.
Over the course of ten hours, more than thirty surgeries were performed.
All thirty recruits perfectly adapted to their Secondary Hearts and completed the first step of their transformation into Astartes.
"Praise the Emperor! The great Father of Humanity. Our legion will gain at least twenty new recruits," an Apothecary said happily.
Though over thirty had been operated on, later stages of the transformation still carried risks, so he gave a conservative estimate.
"No, my child. I have a feeling we'll get all thirty recruits, just as perfect as their first surgery," Magnus said with unusual certainty.
Through his psychic foresight, he had seen some futures where all these boys, implanted today, would become his true son, the warriors of the Thousand Sons Legion.
Axis, who had been assisting throughout, now fell deep into thought as he purified the Secondary Hearts with Ki.
While maintaining the boys' bodies, he distinctly sensed a force within these Secondary Heart that was not Ki.
It was a very bizarre power, even more insidious than the typical energies of the Warp, and extremely hard to detect.
If he hadn't used Ki at close range, Axis would never have noticed it.
Magnus's gene-seed, and the secondary Heart cultivated with it truly had a problem.
It seemed to have been infected by some unknown force.
Axis had just helped create thirty new recruits, whose Secondary Hearts were now safe.
Once they officially became legionaries, they would begin to cultivate their own gene-seeds, harvesting one from their Progenoid Glands every five years.
He would have to examine one of these neophytes at the end of their transformation to be completely sure, but he was certain that the first batch of gene-seeds produced by them should be safe, but with the future battles and with the use of psychic powers, Axis could not guarantee that their gene-seeds wouldn't mutate once more.
After Axis withdrew his Ki from the boys' bodies, he could still sense that strange, insidious energy slowly, ever so slowly attempting to invade them, or perhaps, invade Magnus's perfect gene-seeds!
All of this pointed to a shadowy mastermind.
It was a grand conspiracy!
Honestly, Axis was beginning to regret coming to Magnus.
The Primarchs had been sabotaged by Chaos, and Magnus seemed to be the earliest target.
After all, his psychic powers were the strongest, and his connection to the Warp was the deepest, making him the easiest to tamper with.
"Axis, you've been a tremendous help! Please, in the coming days, help me complete even more surgeries. I want to use this method to cultivate a batch of safe gene-seeds, which can be used to cutivate Secondary Heart," Magnus said. Magnus had a lot of questions popping in his mind that needed answers, but for now, he suppressed them. Magnus, using his psychic powers was now certain.
The problem was with his gene-seeds that was used to cultivate these organs, and for some reason, it only targeted the Secondary Heart.
As long as these new recruits grew up, the gene-seeds harvested from them should all be usable.
He was certain of that fact.
Although Axis was not a member of their legion, he had to plan for the future.
These safe, perfect gene-seeds needed to be produced in sufficient quantity.
Russ and Axis would be staying on Magnus's planet for over a month.
During this time, Magnus would do his best to have Axis help modify new recruits and improve their gene-seeds.
Ahriman gazed at Axis with undisguised greed.
This Wolf Legion warrior, with his mastery of Ki, was simply too important to the Thousand Sons!
Unlike his Primarch, Ahriman wanted to keep Axis within the Thousand Sons permanently.
At the very beginning of the Great Crusade, Magnus's gene-seeds had been just as perfect.
But then the flesh mutations had begun, and who could say if such mutations would return in the future?
Keeping someone who could purify those mutations within the legion was the most ideal solution.
After all, only after decades could he truly confirm whether these boys would develop any flesh mutations.
"It's fine, brother. While we're here, I'll have Axis help you as much as possible with modifying new recruits," Russ said.
Truthfully, even Russ was very excited at this moment.
His own gene-progeny had issues as well, namely, the Wulfen mutation.
Although the chances were small and mostly under control, the problem still existed!
Since Axis could resolve the mutation problem in Magnus's gene-seed, could he also resolve the Wulfen curse in his own legion?
"I'm happy to help, Lord Magnus," Axis said.
It seemed his plan had succeeded, but he knew he needed to find a way to leave soon, perhaps even to find a scapegoat.
"Thank you very much," Magnus said.
At that moment, he was even tempted to take Axis directly to the legion's secret prison, to the sons who had suffered flesh mutations and been locked away in stasis fields, just to see if Axis's energy could purify their bodies.
However, he suppressed that impulse. For now, perfect gene-seeds had to be developed sufficiently.
As long as these warriors with the perfect Secondary Heart didn't mutate, the mutation problem could eventually be solved.
It was best not to let too many people know about the issue with his gene-seed.
"Lord Axis, you are extremely important to the Thousand Sons. I'd like to formally request that you stay with us as an exchange officer!" Ahriman said from the side, his expression extremely courteous.
Among the Astartes, it wasn't uncommon for warriors to temporarily work in other legions.
Now the Thousand Sons wanted Axis to be with them, and they could even send one of their own to the Space Wolves in exchange.
At those words, Magnus's eyes lit up. That's right! The Astartes had such a tradition.
"I'm sorry, Lord Magnus. I'm a company commander of the Astartes, and my company is still being formed.
"Even if I wanted to stay with you, I'd have to serve with the Wolves for decades before I could consider it," Axis refused without hesitation.
What a joke!
He was desperate to leave the Thousand Sons' territory. The Warp corruption here was just too damn deep.
"Hahaha! Sorry, brother. Axis is my legion's Wolf Lord. There's no way I can let him go," Russ said.
He was still hoping that, once Axis returned, he could improve the gene-seed for the Wolves as well, maybe even eliminate the Wulfen mutation and create perfect gene-seeds.
"We can send ten Astartes from the Thousand Sons as replacements! Axis would only be here for a limited time, just a few decades of exchange," Magnus offered, he too was extremely courteous.
He only needed Axis to stay for a few decades, long enough to ensure the Thousand Sons wouldn't suffer further mutations, and long enough to build up a stockpile of perfect gene-seeds.
Then, Axis could leave.
Russ, however, immediately waved him off with a big gesture, making it clear that he refused.
Forget ten Thousand Sons Astartes, even a hundred wouldn't compare to one of his wolf cubs, not even to mention Axis.
The atmosphere grew a bit awkward.
Both Primarchs looked displeased, and Ahriman even looked intent on reaching for his psychic staff, intent on forcing Axis to stay. He had simply seen too many of his kin die to stay his hand.
Seeing this, Russ's hand was already rested on his Frost Chainsword.
Axis simply sneered.
If Ahriman wanted to try and keep him by force, he didn't mind teaching the Librarian a lesson.
Did Ahriman think he was the strongest below the Primarchs?
Even if he was, Axis wasn't afraid of him.
Ahriman's excessive actions infuriated Magnus, who shot his son a fierce glare.
"What are you doing, Ahriman?
"Russ is my brother, and Axis is our honored guest, not an enemy! Put away your weapon and get back to your room, immediately!"
"Great Father, I was only thinking of the legion's future. Lord Axis is too important to our legion. We only wanted him to stay with us for a few decades…"
Boom! Before Ahriman could finish, Magnus unleashed a psychic storm that sent son flying, knocking him out cold.
"I won't repeat myself," Magnus said darkly, but Ahriman wasn't conscious to hear him.
Ahriman was fiercely loyal to the legion, but he was also extreme and dangerously overconfident.
Several of the Thousand Sons Astartes quickly stepped forward to drag him away.
"My apologies, Axis. And Russ. Since you're both unwilling, I won't force the matter.
"I only hope that, during your stay, Axis can continue to corporate with us and participate in modifying new recruits."
Only then did Russ's expression soften.
"Ahem! Allow me to say something, Lord Magnus. I'd like to speak with you privately, truly privately, with no one else listening!" Axis coughed and spoke up.
"Of course, Lord Axis," Magnus replied.
Nodding to Russ, Axis followed Magnus into a chamber.
"Lord Magnus, the truth is, I came here because I have a request," Axis said.
[tl/n:would you believe me if I said I rewrote the entire chapter to align with Warhammer lore?]
